Re: MiSTer Nuked-MD Mega Drive Core

There was also a MAME developer who said that RetroArch is "slapping them in the face" by having a package manager that lets you download MAME cores. So then every single Linux distro is "slapping them in the face".

I love all of these projects btw. I just wouldn't take emulator drama too seriously.

Re: FM Towns and GameCube Core Possible?

Plus once the consoles use frame buffers the advantages of FPGA evaporate. Gamecube is near perfect on Dolphin. Why does this line keep being repeated everywhere? Have you used Dolphin? Dolphin has quite a lot of glitches and accuracy work has almost stopped. They're mostly working on the GUI now. Performance problems are obviously worse too compa...

The filters are on the ARM side. Most of the cores don't use the ARM CPU at all. Only some cores use it for implementing the CD-ROM drive, or MSU-1 in the case of SNES.

Re: Nuked-SC55 and emusc: Roland SC-55, emulated, 2024 Edition

I suggest locking this thread or removing references to Nuked SC-55. To reiterate, the use-case that almost everyone wants for this kind of project is incompatible with Nuked SC-55's license. If you want to pair up SC-55 emulation with the MiSTer, keep an eye on emusc. emusc is progressing well, has a friendly license, and emusc's author actually w...

For anyone with issues, make sure you have a recent RAM module. I just replaced mine with a 3.0 128MB RAM module and now Saturn games work. None of them worked for me before.

I wonder how appropriate Nuked SC-55 would be for something like the mt32-pi? Judging by the license text, it seems to have a thing against "emulation boxes". Very cool project regardless.

Re: N64 Core Development Ends

The core is absolutely incredible, like the PS1 core. I think when Robert says perfect, he basically means bsnes-level perfect. This may not be possible on the DE10-nano, but will you notice the difference? And of course I'm sure that the core can be perfect when better FPGA hardware is available.

Re: MiSTer Nuked-MD Mega Drive Core

The topic is nuanced further by the fact that you can make mistakes when translating die photos into FPGA code, hence there are still bugs in the NeoGeo core. I don’t disagree, but what bugs are left in the NeoGeo core? There aren’t any open bug reports on the issue tracker. You are of course right. It looks like my information about NeoGeo was ou...

Re: MiSTer Nuked-MD Mega Drive Core

The SNES core is based on hardware documentation and observed behavior. Observed behavior often means using test roms as well as games and comparing results with real hardware. Nuked-MD, like the NeoGeo core, is based on decapping the actual chips, taking die photos and then translating that to FPGA code. Both methods can certainly lead to a very h...

Re: A 1.0 Verilog Version of Nuked MD Was Released

I can see why people are excited. The core that we have on the MiSTer doesn't claim to be cycle accurate. It is also observation based. The new core is based on die photos and basically aims to be an exact replica.

Really cool. I can't wait to see the progress on this and also what kind of FPGA device will end up replacing the de10-nano in the next couple years. I definitely think Dreamcast is possible without any major hybrid emulation (there is some for the CD-based consoles on the MiSTer, but it's only related to the CD drive) on a newer FPGA device. Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

I think we can rule out any of the Japanese computers, since the developer doesn't speak Japanese. I could however see a deeper rewrite of ao486 happen, or a replacement. SNES originally had a 68000 @12MHz but because Sega used a 68000 for the Mega Drive/Genesis out of spite they went with the very limited Ricoh 5A22 instead. The SNES basically inh...

Re: X68000 core and external midi (other than MT32-pi) questions

MIDI is a bit flaky with the MiSTer unfortunately. I would suggest that you only buy that SC-55ST if you intend to use it for other things like a PC, and view any success with the MiSTer as an extra. There is also an SC-55 emulator ( https://github.com/skjelten/emusc )in the works, and the author of the mt32-pi seems interested in integrating that ...

Re: Wishlist of Cores You Would Like to See in the Future

If you're trying to turn the DE-10 into a synthesizer instead of a game emulator, that's fine, but it would be useless for the Mister project. You might be able to make something really neat, but it's not related to retro gaming at all. The MiSTer was never strictly a retro gaming project. Even the name "MiSTer" comes from "Amiga&qu...

Re: Hybrid Developments

As mentioned, emulating the CPU in software didn't go very well in the case of Minimig. Also note that there basically aren't any x86 emulators in the first place that are both accurate and fast. It would make more sense to improve the FPGA code than to introduce any kind of software emulation into the core. This could make the core both faster and...

Re: Playing GBA Core on a CRT Small Screen

You can do a clean 3x integer scale to 720x480. This could theoretically work well on a CRT in interlaced (480i) mode. I'm not sure whether interlaced is supported or not in MiSTer.

Re: Would EasyRPG be Possible?

I can see two possible ways to run it on the FPGA chip: 1) Run it as-is on an existing core, such as ao486. On ao486, you may even be able run the original RPG Maker 2000/2003 programs and skip EasyRPG. 2) Make a custom "PC" core that has the bare minimum for EasyRPG, to squeeze out some more performance. It could have a RISC-V CPU and a ...

200k logic cells is a considerable improvement. But is it enough of an improvement to enable developers to make more demanding cores? The MiSTer is beginning to show its age, so I think that for any replacement to catch on,...
