Re: Looking for tips on soldering to USB contacts

Flux cleans oxidation off the solder and the contact points, which allows for better solder flow and better mechanical and electrical bonds. Metal oxidizes quickly when heated, which can lead to crusty, brittle, unreliable joints if there isn't enough flux. Sometimes you won't be able to get solder to stick at all if there isn't enough flux. That's...

Re: Advice for HDMI Users

I appreciate the info. I'm also using a soundbar and a Bravia TV, so I'll definitely pick up one of the adapters. For the pin 15 stuff, I was talking about the posts on page 2 where OP found additional HDMI issues that were solved by taping over pin 15. They start here: NEW INFO: There is STILL something electrically weird going on with MiSTer's HD...

Re: Advice for HDMI Users

I've been having similar issues with my MiSTer and stumbled across this thread. Please tell me if this is a fair summary of what we know so far... Problem 1: As soon as you connect the DE10-Nano to your AV setup it can disrupt CEC-related features in every connected device, or lead to several other issues listed in the first post. Cause: The DE10-N...

Re: CRAM color palette dots option

This is exciting! I was really hoping someone would implement this. I'm kind of nostalgic for the dots, even if they were usually hidden by overscan in most games. How hard would it be to show the left and right borders too? That's the only obvious visual difference left between the core and original hardware, as far as I know: https://github.com/M...

Re: Shining Force II Crash

Dang. That's certainly a dramatic way for a game to crash! You should definitely report this on github so it can get looked at: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Genesis_MiSTer/issues If you can upload your .sav somewhere, that might also help with debugging. So would mentioning the specific filename and/or hash for some of the roms you tried. Here's...

Re: Did I permanently damage my IO Board, or is it ok?

I double-checked and there are no shorts. Everything appears to be functioning normally now. Since it started working again as soon as I re-flowed the solder for the capacitor at C2, it seems like the only issue was a bad joint there. Is there any reason to assume that the IO board or DE-10 might have been damaged when I attempted to power them up ...

Did I permanently damage my IO Board, or is it ok?

Background: On my IO board, I trimmed and re-flowed the leads on the LED headers to better fit the RTC spacer. During the process I accidentally removed the capacitor at C2. I soldered the capacitor back on and put the IO board back on the DE-10, but my MiSTer wouldn't power on. I removed the IO board and the DE-10 booted normally. I was hoping it ...

Re: Your favorite NES palette?

It’s almost impossible to get a perfect visual match for any specific NES/CRT combo. Modern displays can’t show some of the colors that a CRT could, and the NES would look a little different on every CRT anyway due to variability in their phosphors and decoding techniques. Just grab a composite splitter and run the same NES to two different CRTs an...

Re: Your favorite NES palette?

If you generate colors based on the math of the chip, and factor in the most closely measured outputs you can get your hands on, you can cook up something you might call an ideal palette. The reality of how this would be displayed on actual devices would vary wildly, however. Is this how your idealized palette was made? If so, would you mind elabo...

Re: Alternate Colours for OSD?

I think this would be extremely helpful for people who need (or prefer) higher-contrast colors in their UI. I'm not sure what the best way to implement it would be (maybe an ini option to avoid adding more to the menus) but it would be a worthwhile addition.

Re: Games that push Cores and Consoles to the MAX!

On SNES, Vortex is an impressive 3D game that uses the SuperFX chip. Can't say it's an amazing game, but pretty unique. Stunt Race FX is similarly impressive and is a bit easier to learn. On Genesis, Treasure was great at pulling off impressive effects. Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, and especially Alien Soldier have lots of stuff flying around t...

Re: Mapper Requests

I know some homebrew games (like Owlia and Battle Kid 2) use an oversized Mapper 2.

Mapper 268 might also be worthwhile since Retro-Bit's NES releases (Holy Diver and Metal Storm) use it, and those were fairly well-received.

Re: Classic Gaming - The most active "public" MiSTer community on Discord

I just tried this, I went and tagged a server mod, quoted him, and said I disagreed with him. He did not ban me, I'll update this post if he bans me tomorrow,. :D Not to contribute to drama, but I've also publicly disagreed with the mods there more than once, and I've never been threatened with a ban. I've been there for over a year and they aren'...
