Re: N64 Core

Is there a way to use an original N64 controller with RumblePak with this current core?

Rumble seems to work for me in Star Fox 64. I'm using an original controller and rumble pak, and a GamerPro Advanced adapter (which I guess is essentially a BlissBox?).

I assume that you have selected Rumble as the pak type for Pad 1 in the core menu?

Re: N64 Core

Core menu works fine - allows me to load up a rom (I know quite a few don't work) and then says auto detect failed and nothing happens.

Are you using a nointro ROM set? If not, have you tried that?
Do you have MD5 checksums of the ROMs that you are using?

Just thought I'd mention a possible typo in the FAQ: The TL;DR section suggests that you should name the database file N64-Database.txt (capital D), while it's referred to as N64-database.txt everywhere else on that page.

Thunderforce AC is available on the Saturn as part of the Thunder Force Gold Pack. I haven't checked if it's playable on the MiSTer Saturn core.

Re: The Result of My Search for a Great MiSTer Display

I picked up a PA248QV last week, and I like it so far. The "Sharp & Crisp" preset with adaptive scanlines looks really nice for vertically oriented games IMO. My LG CX will probably keep serving as my primary MiSTer display, but it's nice to have a convenient option available for those games that are meant to be played in a vertical o...

Happy to see this getting released. I experienced some graphical glitches in Donkey Kong Jr, like weird noisy ghosting effects. But that might be a problem with the ROM rather than the core.

This is really cool. I know it's an early version, but I decided to try some of my old tech demos, and they all worked, except that the PWM audio playback was too fast. The pitch sounded correct, but it's updating too fast, so I don't know if the audio DMA interrupt is triggering too frequently or what's going on. See for example the attached ROM, ...

Have you tried TrashUncle's "Commodore 1084 Round" shadow mask? Last time I saw one of those monitors in person was probably ~25 years ago, so I can't really rate the accuracy of the mask myself.

Re: Sega Saturn Core in Development

The SH family isn't all that common though - nothing like the M68k. So I could well imagine that srg wrote his own SH-1 and SH-2 implementations. Fortunately they have pretty small instruction sets, so as far as processors go, those should be pretty easy to implement. At least that's my experience from writing software emulators, though I don't kno...

I bought my case from him last year (a kit including an acrylic case, I/O board with fan, and USB hub). I've had no issues with any of the products so far. Perhaps I would've liked a case that was a bit sturdier, but that's not really any fault of his since I'm the one who decided to buy that particular case.

Re: Vector games how to get better image

To get it to look more like on the original arcade machine, the core would probably have to add some antaliasing when rendering the vectors. And possibly some slight "glow" around the vectors as well. For a software emulator that shouldn't be that much of an issue, but I have no idea how practical it would be for a MiSTer core to do that....

Re: NES ROMs File Names NTSC vs PAL

There little to no reason to separate the roms between US and Canada Were there any NES games where french in-game text was added in the Canadian release? Some PAL releases were translated into the local languages. The distinction between "Australia", "France" and "Europe" seems pretty arbitrary though. There were abo...

Re: NES ROMs File Names NTSC vs PAL

Yes, games that were not adjusted for the difference in screen refresh rate and CPU speed between NTSC and PAL consoles will typically run slower on a PAL console, and the music will typically have slightly different pitch and tempo. Some games were partially adjusted, so that e.g. the music would sound the same as on an NTSC console, but with the ...

Re: NES ROMs File Names NTSC vs PAL

Far from all NES games were adjusted for PAL timings when they got released in Europe. My guess would be that something like "(USA, Europe)" means that the ROM contents of the US and European releases were identical, so it matches both of those. In pretty much every case that means that you should run it with NTSC timing.

I was wondering what had become of this core since this thread has been idle for a while. Seems like Pierco has recently started working on it again, and while it apparently is far from done, it's looking pretty good.

Looking forward to the day when I can play Donkey Kong Jr, Bomb Sweeper and Squish in their original form on my MiSTer.

Re: 32X

The sound capabilities added by the 32X was just a simple circuit that allowed playback of sampled audio in either mono or stereo. The maximum sample resolution was 12 bits, but it would drop the higher you set the sample rate. So e.g. at 22 kHz you had approximately 10 bits of resolution for your samples. The display processor basically just gives...

Re: How accurate is GBA core sound? (re: settings to improve quality?)

when a game uses full volume for both soundDMA and GB Channels, the SoundDMA is a bit too loud compared to the GB channels.
Well, the two DMA channels contribute two thirds of the total output level. Or do you mean they are too loud even after taking that into account?

My fomula was just a simple:
- add all 4 pixel
- divide by 4
I don't know if that would make any noticable difference, but would it be possible (with a reasonable effort) to take the fractional part of the rotation/scaling coordinates into account instead of giving all 4 pixels equal weight?

Well, in the interest of hardware preservation, I feel like even these obscure features ought to be supported. Doesn't mean that it should be a top priority or anything, but if you only have the palettes and the borders then it's not really a Super Gameboy.

Isn't that not already in the Gameboy core? Just select super gameboy on and a compatible rom. Worked for me just fine
The SGB had support for letting the game upload arbitrary code to the SNES's RAM to be executed by the SNES CPU. I don't think that could work unless the SGB core also included a SNES core (or vice versa).

Re: Some games aren't loading

Do you have a hex editor on your Mac? You can tell if the file has an INES header or a NES 2.0 header by looking at the 8th byte in the file. If the least significant digit of that bytes is 8, 9, A or B, then it's a NES 2.0 header. Otherwise it's an INES header (assuming that the first 3 bytes of the file are 'N', 'E', 'S'). In an INES header, the ...

Re: Saturn

It's kind of funny that they talk about polygon rasterization rate, since the 32X's graphics processor doesn't have any hardware polygon rasterization support. It basically just gives you a linear framebuffer to write into, and then lets you combine that with the Megadrive's video output in various ways. The sound capabilities are pretty basic too....
