Re: Freesync?

I have a FreeSync/G-Sync Compatible monitor (LG 27GL83A-B) and it's worked fine with MiSTer at 1920x1440, with or without Adaptive Sync enabled. It does drop out for a second or two after starting up a game with vsync_adjust=2 enabled, presumably due to the refresh rate switch. It would be nice if more cores offered a "Sync core to video"...

Re: Question about custom aspect ratios.

I wrote a quick guide here . TL;DR: the values of custom_aspect_ratio_1 and custom_aspect_ratio_2 in MiSTer.ini will be selectable as aspect ratios alongside "Original" and "Full Screen" in supported cores. You don't need to convert to a decimal value or anything, just use the typical aspect ratio notation, e.g. "4:3" ...

Re: Vertical Scanlines for integer scaled 256x224?

If I understand the current screen resolution logic correctly, I think integer scaling is only based on the vertical resolution, with horizontal resolution being calculated per the aspect ratio. I think you would probably need an option for the integer scaling to be based on the horizontal resolution, and the vertical resolution being calculated p...

Re: Aspect ratio and integer scaling

Update on this: there is now a mechanism for specifying custom aspect ratios built into the MiSTer framework! Individual cores need to be updated to add support, but the per-core changes are pretty simple from what I can tell--hopefully this comes to all cores that can benefit from it in short order. For now you can try it out on NES (like I did), ...

Re: Quartus Settings (Ryzen 7)

I got a modest speed boost building the Genesis core on my Ryzen 2600 (6 cores, 12 threads) running Windows 10. Compilation time was 17m38s with NUM_PARALLEL_PROCESSORS set to 6 compared with 19m37s on the default setting. Not earth-shattering but I'll take it. Zen 3 can't get here soon enough... (Interestingly enough, the compile time with NUM_PAR...

Re: OK to share custom core builds?

Well, what cores, custom how? I've got a bunch of ideas, but here's what I've done so far: Changed around some values and menu options in the NES, SNES, Genesis, and MegaCD cores to enable integer scaling at 1440p, see this post for more details on what I'm trying to accomplish. Made a small change to the GBA core (more specifically, the MiSTer fr...

Re: OK to share custom core builds?

I think it would be great to put them on GitHub. There one can subscribe to updates and so can follow updates much more easy than here in the forum. Also bug reports are more efficient on GitHub than here. And when you put them on GitHub, script authors can include them easily in their update scripts. I'd absolutely do that if there was enough int...

OK to share custom core builds?

I've made a number of custom core builds with changes that probably wouldn't get accepted into upstream, but that I feel might be useful to others. Would it be OK to share them as attachments here with the obvious caveat that they aren't supported by the MiSTer devs?

Re: Aspect ratio and integer scaling

In genesis core there is an option to correct or not the aspect ratio. I thought that it was switching between 64:49 and 4:3... So what that option does? A majority of Genesis games output at 320px horizontal resolution (320x224 for NTSC, 320x240 for PAL). The "320x224 Aspect" setting lets you choose between a square pixel aspect ratio (...

Re: Aspect ratio and integer scaling

Count me among those that care about this too. I'd love an integer scale option. If this doesn't gain traction was it intensive to recompile the cores with the options? Would all cores need it or are there ones that already integer scale horizontal? To be clear, this wouldn't be an integer scaling option per se (that would be a lot more work). The...

Re: Aspect ratio and integer scaling

MiSTer has video filters to achieve good-looking scaling without the need to be exact integer scaled. https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_MiSTer/wiki/HDMI-Scaler-Custom-Filter-Coefficients For the SNES, what you want to use is the "SNES Interpolation (Sharp)" filter. Why settle, though? Interpolation can never be quite as sharp as integ...

Aspect ratio and integer scaling

So I have my MiSTer hooked up to a 1440p gaming monitor with the newly-added 1920x1440 video mode enabled. As others have noted, 1440p is ideal for playing retro games with integer scaling because it's a multiple of well-known vertical resolutions like 144, 160, 240, and 480. Furthermore, it's great for integer scaling of 256x224 titles that were d...

Re: In-line power switch

You really should check them under load. Hook everything up, power up, and measure voltage at the de-10 barrel jack. I've only ever come across one decent batch of these switches, haven't been able to get more 'good' ones. OK, I tried this and did see a drop from about 5.15V without the switch to almost exactly 5V with, but I should be OK since th...

Re: In-line power switch

What I did was plug in just the power brick without the switch attached, then set my multimeter to read DC voltage in the 20v range (yours might be slightly different). Then, since the plug is center positive, i touched the black probe to the outside of the plug barrel and put the red probe inside the barrel. I got a reading of about 5.2v, which i...

Re: In-line power switch

Can someone give an explanation of how to test for the voltage drop with a multimeter? I'm not sure where to put the leads.
