Re: BGFX effects filter from MAME?
It would probably require another device to take the video from MiSTer (via Direct Video) and doing the scaling and shader effects itself before sending the video on to the display. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Re: Does the MiSTer NeoGeo Core Support Stereo Sound?
BTW my question is still open to answer. As the Neo geo Mister core (console and Arcade version) use mostly the Darksoft or NeoSD unencrypted roms does that mean that stereo isn't working on the NeoGeo Mister cores? Stereo is working just fine. The problem you're referring to is specifically with Xeno Crisis , a modern and unlicensed game. As info...

Re: Odd colors over VGA -> Component
It's a more cumbersome setup, but you're better off using Direct Video along with an RGB-to-YPbPr transcoder. EDIT: Just adding an external RGB-to-YPbPr transcoder to the analogue I/O board might be enough to fix these specific colour issues, but I don't have any experience with the analogue I/O board. Direct Video was released just before I setup ...

Re: TMSS BIOS
I have the TMSS ROM set as my boot.rom to kinda replicate the real thing. It loads just fine, but it causes some annoying flickering as it sees itself as a cartridge and loads itself infinitely. is it possible to modify the ROM to disable the cartridges load so it just stays on the copyright text?

Re: NTP Not Updating Automatically
It'll fail if it runs before the MiSTer has an IP. I thought I'd already accounted for that, but it turns out that's exactly what it was in the end. I had been delaying the script by 5 seconds, thinking that was plenty of time for the Ethernet interface to fully come up (it wasn't, obviously). Delaying it by 10 seconds was all it took to get it wo...

Re: NTP Not Updating Automatically
To get things back on track: The main point of my initial post is that the clock will not update automatically at startup , no matter what I do with startup scripts. The issue with rtc.sh failing to ping "0.pool.ntp.org" is just a minor bug, and I already mentioned two ways to fix that. It seems that ntpdate just won't work from a startup...

NTP Not Updating Automatically
I've noticed recently that "update_all.sh" has been failing for me, and I realized today that it's because the clock is resetting to Unix epoch, breaking HTTPS. My MiSTer is refusing to update the time via NTP unless I run rtc.sh manually every time I boot. I've tried automating it with startup scripts (in "/etc/network/if-up.d/"...

Re: MiSTer to an HD CRT?
540p? That sounds like a nightmare to deal with. You'd likely end up letterboxing NTSC content and cropping PAL content.
Is this also a flat screen CRT? I'm not sure why you'd even bother at that point.

Re: When loading the nes core, it always boots to FDS now?
To get the grey screen back, just copy "boot0.rom" to "boot1.rom". The core won't actually load it (because it's not a valid NES ROM), but it'll stop it from loading the FDS BIOS. Alternatively, place a blank FDS image (it must have the 16 byte header) in the folder to have the the FDS BIOS load properly (without the annoying so...

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?
I'm wondering if this could be solved with an add-on like an RPi running just the audio section of MAME. I've wondered that too: something like mt32-pi, but for analogue audio. It might be an overengineered solution, though—at least for just this game. I think I'd be happy with better and more varied samples. Having 6–8 variations of the walking s...

Mapping the twist and push-pull to the right stick of a typical controller works well enough, but pairing a flight stick like the GRS Tron Stick with a push-pull spinner like the TurboTwist might be an adequate approximation.

I'm sure Jason's a nice guy and all, but he really has no clue when it comes to reviewing retro gaming hardware. I'd take his opinions (negative and positive) with a grain of salt. The same can be said for just about anybody else in his circle.

Re: Question re. feasibility of creating replacement CPU, PPU out of MiSTer NES core
It would be nice to have new ASICs made as drop-in replacements if that's at all feasible. The clones that already exist have known issues (mainly with sound, if I recall correctly).
If going the FPGA route, wouldn't it make more sense to design an entirely new PCB centered around a singular FPGA? That'd be the ultimate way of reviving a broken NES.

Re: Dealing with 50hz CRT Flicker
I'm Australian, so I grew up with 50 Hz TVs (PC monitors were typically 60 Hz or higher). I was used to it at the time, but I honestly can't stand the 50 Hz flicker these days. But I also avoid PAL games like the plague now, so it's hardly an issue for me.

Re: Degraded image and sound through SCART Hub
I've run my MiSTer through an Otaku-Games switch without any issues (via Direct Video, not an analogue I/O board). I'm just guessing here, but maybe the signal coming from your MiSTer is off-spec in some way and that's running afoul of the switch's internal circuitry. Could it be as simple as the CSYNC signal being TTL and not 75 Ω? Is that even p...

It appears to be just the red label version again. I suspect it's just an older version of the MRA file that hasn't been removed from our systems.
UPDATE: I rebuilt my "_Arcade" folder and "Defender.mra" is no longer present, but "Defender (Red Label).mra" is.

Re: Screen tearing after playing Zelda LTTP for multiple hours.
It is important to note that there are 2 different issues here: Tearing with vsync_adjust=0: Caused by MiSTer scaler. This is visible on all displays/capture cards. Tearing with Samsung and vsync_adjust=1/2. Caused by Samsung. Tip: Do not buy Samsung Yeah, the two issues seem to be unrelated. I've created a separate thread for discussing the Samsu...

Screen tearing and frame skipping on Samsung QLED TVs
Following on from the Samsung TV discussion in this thread since it was getting off-topic. To quote myself in that thread: I'm not sure if this is related, but I've started having issues with my Samsung Q80T since it updated to firmware 2014.1 today. I had been using "vsync_adjust=1" just fine for the last six months, but now it (and &quo...

Re: Fitting RTC - 18 pin connector on 14 pin header WTF?
I don't have an RTC board myself, but it looks to me that it should be a matter of lining up the plastic of the connector to fit inside the header, so that only the centre 14 holes on the connector actually are mating with pins.
