Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

I'm really happy all these improvements are coming along. Especially for such an iconic game. Something I've noticed and haven't seen anyone commeting about is the palette colours of the game. For example, the red of the platforms / scaffold in the first level is quite different from the red / pinkish tone from the original board. Has any one noti...

Re: Custom Joysticks All Have Same ID

I wouldn't count on this being changed in MiSTer any time soon (if ever). A workaround for this is to use one or more of Mayflash's MAGIC adaptors that accept USB controllers. The host (MiSTer) will see the adaptor and not the real controller behind it. Another trick is to use the different modes (XInput, DirectInput, etc.) as different profiles fo...

Are they on the SD card, or have you moved them elsewhere? Wallpaper and font files really need to be on the boot drive so that they're immediately available when the menu core starts.

Re: Discussion and Development of a 'MiSTer 2.0' Modular Hardware Platform

One important thing to keep in mind early on is that HDMI is not a licence-free standard. Terasic are obviously handling that with the DE10-Nano, but any community-developed alternative would need to eschew HDMI in favour of DVI or DisplayPort to avoid running afoul of the law, and that could put a lot of noses out of joint.

Re: Discussion and Development of a 'MiSTer 2.0' Modular Hardware Platform

I think the "budget" or "MiSTer Lite" route would be the place to start. I'm sure there'd be plenty of interest in a board that could just run Golden Age arcade games, for example—perfect for a dedicated cabinet setup.

Re: Trouble with PAL/NTSC Output on CRT

So as you can see, the image is still squished. Of course. A PAL image is 576i, or "288p" with these systems' pseudo-progressive modes. So, a resolution of 256 × 239 translates to only 83% of the vertical screen area. It's better than the 78% of 256 × 224, but still not ideal. Either way, your image will look squished unless you can some...

It will look squished in PAL if you're using the 256 × 224 test pattern. Have you tried the 256 × 239 pattern?

This is all typical with gaming on a CRT TV. Avoid PAL wherever possible for most systems, as the games were often poorly converted from NTSC (hence the squished image).

Re: Jotego Fixing Old Cores

I agree 100%. Most of them just need audio/sound fixes. Donkey Kong core is a mess regarding this. Its sad see that the Golden Age cores get no attention. It seems most people care about is how far they can push the de10's capabilities like the PS1, saturn, CPS3, etc. Thats great and all, but I feel a lot of the Golden age core are so close to bei...

I have thought about getting a new one but it is so hard to choose a new one... the ones that have a builtin DVB-T receiver seem to be all "smart TVs" that are slow to start, try to flood you with advertising or have other annoyances. I don't need all the smart TV stuff since I have a Fire TV for Youtube, Netflix and such that. I would j...

Re: Sega Saturn Core as Useful Information to Repair Real Saturn Consoles?

I had issues with my PAL Model 2 after installing a MODE, but replacing both the PSU (with one from Mobius Strip) and the ribbon cable sorted them out. I'm pretty sure replacing the ribbon cable fixed an audio issue (hiss/static?) which wasn't present till the MODE was installed. I don't remember why I replaced the PSU, but there was a reason (I th...

This feature was added specifically for addressing this particular concern, and for 7800 core as well. YMMV, be aware if you use any features of the updater that place files it cannot be aware of any name changes you have made, and you will have to manually symlink any kinds of cheats or what have you that you may want to carry over. It'd be nice ...

It's a Japanese game. It was released in PAL regions but not North America.

There are ways of playing it in both 60 Hz and English. There's a US prototype, and there's at least one ROM hack/patch available.

Re: Custom Modeline for SNES

Short answer: No. What you're asking for would need to be handled by the scaler, but you're disabling the scaler to get an image on the CRT TV in the first place. Alternatively, the core would need to be modified to pillarbox the unscaled image, and I don't see that happening (if that were practical, I'm sure we'd have border support). If you're ad...

Another problem with a potential N64 core is that it would need to be able to render at 480p/576p to be even worth using for many users (myself included).

Those dark lines on a CRT television aren't "scanlines"

I'm sure this is news to many, but those dark lines we see on a a CRT television when displaying 240p/288p content are not "scanlines". Those lines are dark precicesly because they aren't being scanned by the electron beam! In fact, A 240p image looks the way it does on a CRT because it's only 50% scanlines rather than the 100% of 480i. I...
