Re: Discussion and Development of a 'MiSTer 2.0' Modular Hardware Platform

Well sipeed is apparently targeting a mister replacement with the gowin arora v 138k + Andes risc v cores Their dev tooling is kind of meh, and Altera LEs aren't directly comparable to gowin LES, but it does look quite interesting for half the price and 138k le. Would need a carrier with HDMI TX (12.5gbps serdes so 4k120 works lol) and low latency...

Re: Discussion and Development of a 'MiSTer 2.0' Modular Hardware Platform

Sipeed just came out with a new Tang Nano 20K FPGA at https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005581148230.html looks pretty interesting. 20,000 logic elements puts it closer to the level of the original MiST project. Still, a tiny MiST with built in HDMI and USB-C for power would be enough for a lot of people's portable needs.

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

Like Robert said, a new x86 PC core could be marginally better than ao486 if built for MiSTer from the ground up, but that would be a lot of work for only a minor improvement. Even if someone managed to implement a Pentium-esque chip on MiSTer it would still be too slow to run late 90s 2D classics like Age of Empires or Rollercoaster Tycoon or Bal...

Re: Gameboy Printer

Printer support would also come in handy for a Casio Loopy core. Also I'd be lying if I said I haven't daydreamed about getting not only Game Boy Printer support on MiSTer, but also support to translate USB Video into video input to the Game Boy Camera. There's an idea, using any V4L2 compatible camera with cores that can use them. No idea if that...

Re: Creating new Sega Game Gear ASIC from FPGA core?

Those old Nes on a Chip clones are ASICS made out of an old FPGA NES design. Nobody has ever bothered to update it because it's quite expensive to produce an ASIC so you would have to expect a decent return on your investment to do so. Could it be done? Probably. But for a system that size it might just make sense to use a smaller FPGA and port the...

Re: Save State Support

Was there any roadmap to getting proper Save State support in the SNES core? This feels like a pretty glaring oversight in an otherwise pitch-perfect core, and unfortunately one that really is a QOL bummer. Is this a fairly complex thing to implement? I remember savestates being a thing on NESTicle in the 90s haha, but maybe I'm uneducated on the ...

Re: MiSTer is 6 Years Old!! Happy Birthday !!!

I got my MiSTer after it started being mentioned in Smokemonster's youtube channel and discord server back in late 2018. I was familiar with MiST but it had limitations that I felt were insurmountable and kept delaying my decision to purchase one. But the MiSTer had a decent price, a good number of cores and features I was interested in playing wit...

Coleco Mini Arcade Tabletops core would be cool. Not sure how different it is to some other similar cores like game and watch.

Casio Loopy would be interesting, perhaps stickers could be output to PDF for printing elsewhere.

Re: Taito Egret II Mini Rollerball/Spinner Controller

#1 is the ideal fix, both solutions could probably be implemented in due course without conflicting with each other. Certainly it is, but someone's got to do it. Right now it would seem that there's no motivation for people who know their way inside the kernel. Maybe we should stage a group buy to spark interest ;) If you have one of these devices...

Re: MSU-1

Missing MSU-1 on Mister keeps me from selling my SD2Snes so Great work!!!! Same here! With the addition of MSU-1 (once it's working properly), the SNES core will officially have more capability than the SD2SNES! (Which is still missing SPC7110 support) compatibility maybe, but SD2SNES does have save states I do believe so it has that going for it.

Re: Taito Egret II Mini Rollerball/Spinner Controller

So I've been thinking about this, If the problem is that these USB spinners are basically just showing up as mouse scroll wheels (I don't have one but that seems to be the case from what's posted here), then there are 2 possible solutions I can think of at least when it comes to MiSTer. 1) Fix the drivers in the Linux kernel so that they function a...

Re: Show Us Your MiSTers

Thanks! I like the right angle usb that definitely improves it a lot. I also widened the holes on top so my screws would actually go inside them, and I'm using rubber feet on the bottom and screws to hold that in. I use the standoffs that came with the de10 inside the bottom of the case to make room for the ssd and USB C. I really like this viperm...

Re: Show Us Your MiSTers

I'm using a heavily mangled version of viperman3's case on Thingiverse that I've added some extra space to and covered up all the ports I don't use. Extras I've added: 2tb M.2 drive (what a waste over USB2), internal mt32-pi, 2 oled screens for the mt32 and i2c2oled, and USB C power supply (3A). Very nice. I also just had Viperman3's standard case...

Re: Hybrid AO486 core?

If FPU tasks could somehow be offloaded to the ARM side for calculations and results passed back to the ao486 core as if it were like plugging in a 386sx math coprocessor chip you could turn off and on from the mister ao486 menu, that would be more than enough for me.

Closed source projects are pretty much Irrelevant to an open source project. It might be relevant to people who wish to use it, but it provides no noticeable benefit to the mister FPGA project itself.

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

If raspberry pi's and other SBC's keep getting more powerful, we'll probably see the day where a future rPi compute module can be paired with an compatible FPGA development board to work in a similar way to how the DE10-Nano interfaces with its ARM side, but with the increased power on the ARM side probably be capable of hybrid emulation maybe even...
