Re: Using a 10TB Hard Drive?

Bear in mind that a larger drive using a smaller fraction of its space will generally be faster than a smaller drive using all its space due to the way the tracks are laid out. The heads will also need to move less for random IO access too.

So yeah. Have at it, etc. It might be overkill, but there are benefits still.

Re: Using a 10TB Hard Drive?

As i understand it, the hosting OS is linux so it should just work.

As above, you’ll need to power it externally, but that’s probably a 3.5” drive anyway so guessing you’re already planning to use it via a 3.5” caddy with its own power supply?

Re: Choosing a New Power Supply For MiSTer

An alternative if finding the mean-well PSU is a pain is to make sure to use a powered USB hub for your USB peripherals (even if you have a USB IO Board).

USB bus powered things is what will cause you to run out of power (hard drives, dongles, controllers, etc.).

Re: Choosing a New Power Supply For MiSTer

Hey everyone, So I'm currently using the "stock" power supply with the splitter and usb 2.1 hub from aliexpress. It works fine, but I'm thinking to purchase a better one, mostly for "future proofing" (adding more usb devices, digital io board or even second RAM). Unfortunately, I'm currently not in the USA or Europe, so some re...

Re: MiSTer Feature Expansion Idea

Exactly the dismissive kind of answer I was expecting. The discussion isn't about whether it should be done, it's if it could. I did say that there are already solutions out there and that this isn't to compete with them but as an additional feature for the MiSTer. For people that already own a MiSTer and also have real hardware, it would just mea...

Re: How durable do you find the DE10-Nano to be?

Intel have tested the Cyclone V for 2.1 million hours, with zero failures. Spread across many devices maybe. but not one device cumulative time, because I don't believe the DE10 nano has been in production for 239 years yet, which is approximately how long 2.1 million hours is :D That said if it is using SRAM, it isn't subject to read/write cycles...

Re: What power supply for this setup?

AS above, just make sure you get at least 4 amps.

5V is mandatory, more amps than 4 is fine and will just give you more headroom for plugged in devices drawing power, but you want at least 4 amps.

If you're not going to accomodate those of us that have bought a fixed setup (aka the setup that works with everything else) well, enjoy carving a niche into a niche... Well you could argue you went off into a niche when you didnt use the official stack. Its just unfortunate that the derriv...

Once you get all this working you may be surprised at just how out of date any browser for windows 95 is… it won’t be pleasant. You can't really reliably run MisterFS under Win95, so FTP is a good alternative for moving miscellaneous small files onto your VHD. There are network playable games, IRC (which is like Discord) and a lot of things other ...

Not having the financial backing and access to one of the largest fabs on the planet is not a good sign for Altera. Getting out of the chips business to more or less become a foundry is not a good sign for Intel. AMD, on the other hand, appears to be happy. On the flip side AMD bought Xilinx, and TSMC is killing Intel in fab tech lately. And yeah ...

Why not go the way of the MT32-Pi ? Call it the GUS-Pi. Infact, why not have many different soundcards to select from, on the Pi ? MIDI data has very low bandwidth requirements compared to audio. Just saying. I have no idea if it would be a problem. The GUS has no midi input , so no game or any other native software would ever work. The GUS CPU ha...

I'm mainly talking about a distant future, not today. I'm talking about in a world with widely adopted 6G. So think 2035. Here's what you'd get with 6G: 6G (sixth-generation wireless) is the successor to 5G cellular technology. 6G networks will be able to use higher frequencies than 5G networks and provide substantially higher capacity and much lo...

Don't get me wrong, I would love a less janky PC core on MiSTer, and a proper Pentium with better performance than ao486's bastard CPU would open the doors for a handful of games that run poorly or not at all in the current core, but I'd be surprised if it could get as far as late 90s 2D classics like Baldur's Gate, Age of Empires, or Rollercoaste...

To be fair when the Amiga was released the 68000 mas already 6 years old and the 7MHz was a rather slow clock speed. The 68020 was already on the market for a year at this point. The 68k when it was new though was a high end workstation CPU. Getting one in the Amiga at the time was (like with the Mac) a revolution in computing power for the masses...

I’m not sure if it does anything but on an a1200 using commodore kickstart you can hold both mouse buttons on power up to get into a hardware menu to disable cache.

No idea if that will do anything to the emulated cpu but may be worth a shot.

The basic problem is that building an FPGA 80286 CPU would be very hard work, but the gains from the 286 would be minimal. Almost everything the 80286 did was never meaningfully taken up by the market. The reward for effort just isn't there. About the only thing is the High Memory Area, which was indeed pretty cool, but you can get that on every c...
