Re: I want to design the perfect "catch all" controller for MiSTer and emulation

Most people who own a MiSTer either... A)Use original console controllers B)Use numerous controllers that replicate the look/feel of specific consoles There are already a lot of controllers available that work well for multiple types of games, so thinking that there is a market for just ONE controller for ALL games is a bit unrealistic. I use the ...

Re: Some cores don't display properly on Sony Trinitron

I would bet the problems are direct_video related. Each core produces its own super resolution, some may be more or less compatible with the converter.

Re: Some cores don't display properly on Sony Trinitron

I'm super sus if an NTSC analog SD TV can't handle SNES. I'd be more likely to blame your converter.

But sure I think [SNES] should work for testing. I'd probably use video_mode=512,240,60,cvt for evener pixels.

Come to think of it, you might need something higher to raise the pixel clock for the converter to work. Maybe 2048,240,60,cvt.

Re: Some cores don't display properly on Sony Trinitron

If you're using direct video none of those settings should do anything. They are for scaled (non-direct) output only. You should be more specific about which cores you have in mind. Some default to sub-NTSC refresh, others work above 15khz like Ao486, others don't have any analog output like ao486. In these cases you want to apply a fix that is spe...

Re: "rolling screen" when starting a core : long-term harm for CRT ?

You are getting a rolling screen because your TV needs composite sync. When a core starts it is outputting H/V sync by default until the MiSTer Main software tells the core to output composite sync which takes a short while. This means your TV is not receiving a Vsync signal during that time so it will generate its own Vsync and this results in th...

Re: "rolling screen" when starting a core : long-term harm for CRT ?

I'm not saying the signal is down for 2 seconds. But that the period it is down (and it has to be down for at least a bit) might cause the TV sync to go weird and it takes 2 seconds to recover. Not that anything is necessarily wrong with the video signal during this period (although it might be), but rather that your TV gets in some state during th...

Re: "rolling screen" when starting a core : long-term harm for CRT ?

15khz is the horizontal refresh, the vertical refresh can vary. Most NTSC consoles are around 59.97 but not exactly, with the SNES being slightly above and the Genesis being slightly below, for example. Arcade cores can deviate more and anything PAL will be down to 50. The Mister is also going to drop signal at least very briefly when you switch a ...

Re: MiSTer on PC CRT and BVM

HDMI to DAC to PC CRT, and VGA to RGB to BVM will work optimally with the same MiSTer config? I'm reading that I should set forced_scandoubler=1 in order to use the PC CRT (from HDMI output in this case) but will that setting interfere with VGA output to the BVM? Yes it would, you shouldn't use it. Forced_scandoubler is for kicking the original 15...

Re: Direct Video No Picture on CRT VGA Monitor

Yeah its possible, one of the HDMI pins carries 5V power, if the extension cable either doesn't support the pin, or else the power is attenuating too much over the two connectors for whatever reason. Would be advisable to try the vga adapter connected directly to the de-10 socket. If that's the issue, the easiest fix might be a vga adapter with aud...

So it seems like the VGA adapter doesn't work in general with Mister but it does work with the PC.

I wonder how (or if) you are powering the adapter? It seems to have a micro-USB for taking power if the HDMI power is insufficient. Try plugging it into the same thing whether using PC or Mister?

You might also try direct_video/forced_scandoubler to 0 and selecting a compatible video mode instead (something lower resolution.) You mean like this? direct_video=0 forced_scandoubler=0 video_mode=6 Don't VGA monitors run obligatorily at 31Khz though? If you have any other display to check the direct video out you might try that (e.g. a 4K display), getting a compatible hdmi->Vga adapter isn't always easy. You might also try direct_video/forced_scandoubler to 0 and selecting a compatible video mode instead (something lower resolution.)

Would also love to know which vscale mode is recommended for this screen between vscale_mode=4 and vscale_mode=5? vscale_mode=4 seems to be scaled slightly more by the screen when compared to vscale_mode=5, so i'm not sure which mode is best? Re: N64 Core

Dunno about the N64 core but the PSX core had different cuts. I think it defaulted to 240 vertical, that means 240 is treated as the vertical resolution even if its empty black space on most games. 216 vertical was also an option, that should result in less than 1440p with those vscale modes. If I'm understanding how it works, vscale_mode=0 probabl...

Re: Using ASUS 2560x1600 Display in a Good Way?

Interesting finding. I tried it myself and I think what is happening is that the horizontal pixel doubling created to support mode 14 is being engaged. I base this on using the Nuked Genesis core to look at checkboard pattern in the 240p test suite, using no shadow mask and v-integer. At 1920x1440 the checkboard looks fairly regular and smooth, how...

Re: Using ASUS 2560x1600 Display in a Good Way?

Could try mode 14 (2560x1440). It has horizontal pixel doubling, but if your monitor maintains the original aspect ratio, it should be 1:1 (since 2560 will fill to the sides.)

The good results on Mister mostly come out of HLG mode, which is more like an extension of SDR format. Maybe your monitor isn't so well set up for that?

The output looks awful warm to me, maybe the color settings in Mister can help if you can't adjust it on the monitor side?

Saturn core hitting main has me reconsidering dual sticks. A lot of missing sound on my single stick solution. The game-changer on an OLED is HDR=1. That gives you the brightness to compensate for deep scanlines and shadowmasks.

The freesync changes don't help at all with resolution or even refresh changes. I've only found it helpful for more compatibility with non-standard refresh rates. Re: out of sync on amiga and atari st cores

Looks like a VGA monitor you got there. Most cores on Mister focus on 15khz analog output, including the most common modes on the amiga/ST, you will need the scandoubler to bring that up to 31khz to be displayed on a VGA monitor. x68000 is an unusual core in that software typically starts at 512p/55hz which seems to be 31khz-ish. Most VGA monitors ...

Re: CRT Wallpaper Issue When Using HDMI

To get wallpapers, you have to use the scaler. The above line makes the scaler do 15khz (240pish) which is a suitable resolution for your CRT, and outputs it over the analog out. But the scaler can only do one resolution at a time, so your HDMI TV won't show anything unless it can somehow handle 240p. The alternate inis are one way around this, you...
