Re: Astro Blaster (1981) Sega

Another enthusiastic vote for Astro Blaster! This game is seminal and I find a lot people seem to either not know of it or have forgotten about it. Gameplay totally holds up today too, it's one of my favourites... "Fighter pilots needed in sector wars" 8-)

Re: N64 Core

Finally got a chance to try out this core yesterday on my MiSTer arcade cab with 27" tri-sync arcade CRT.

Amazing! Just a fantastic piece of work. Playing C64 on a real CRT is total game-changer for my enjoyment of C64 content, the low-res polygons don't age well otherwise.

Thanks Robert!

Exidy Universal Game Board 2 core issues

The #Exidy Universal Game Board 2 core has finally landed for the MiSTer platform. Dive into 80s nostalgia with classic arcade hits like TARG, Spectar, Venture, Mouse Trap, and Pepper II! First of all thank-you for working on this board, I'm excited to be able to play these old favorite games on my system! I was testing these cores on my arcade CR...

Very impressive! Those scanlines look a lot better than an earlier pic that was posted in this thread. Should be black, not just a "darker shade" of the surrounding colors.

LOL Tell Apple that.

Oh, their laptops last ages! Iphone... Well that's another thing

iPhone last forever too. SW support for like 7 + years generally. People have to complain when they change the connector type every 15 years or so. The outrage! lol.

Re: Slowdown in games

Yes, slowdown is authentic to the arcade/computer experience and usually means that something awesome is happening! 8-) Often the slowdown also has a helpful side-effect in giving the player a sort of slow-motion mode to better react to many things happening on the screen at once. Sometimes though, the slowdown just messes with your timing for jump...

There is a fix, go to core options and change the 68k frequency to 7.2 and the slowdown will be gone or very heavily minimized. I believe you can do this with all the Jaleco games on the MiSTer.

But that would be inauthentic! :D

Re: "rolling screen" when starting a core : long-term harm for CRT ?

This won't damage your CRT. You could try playing with your vertical hold adjustment on your CRT to see if you can improve things (or make them worse). :) I respect your opinion, but what is your justification ? How can you justify that without knowing the signal output ? 40 years of experience? :D You wouldn't see a mostly formed image of the scr...

Re: "rolling screen" when starting a core : long-term harm for CRT ?

The CRT is an analog device, so it has an imperfect mechanism for locking the incoming signal, which can result in the "rolling screen" effect you are seeing. This won't hurt your monitor, so long as the incoming frequency is within spec for the monitor. You may be able to adjust your monitor to lock in to the frequency faster, though som...

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

Thanks for all the analysis and comments. The emulated walk sound is pretty much what JOpdorp made, so please do not praise the update for that. What did get into update all is the envelope generator on the syntesize and the synthesized sound effects. Unfortunately, I was not able to reply the last week because I have been travelling due to a deat...

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

Here are two audio recordings off my iphone from my arcade cabinet. No audio filters were configured, full volume: AudioComparison.zip If anything, I'd guess that maybe the emulated sounds are being played back at a higher volume than the sampled ones. They do seem to be a little too "present" vs the other sounds in the game. The sampled ...

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

The digital sound update is so much better than it was, especially for the digital/sampled music. I take it the samples from MAME were used or new samples captured. Great work. However, running sound is almost 100% the main (remaining) issue. With "Samples" it's a very odd non-modulating/repeating sound that changes pitch and is very 'hi...

Karate Champ - Player vs Player?

It appears that only the original Karate Champ core exists currently.

I was wondering if a core for Karate Champ - Player vs Player would be possible? I believe both games use the same underlying hardware.

Has anyone seen anything regarding possible development on this core?

I've discovered that dual stick support is indeed working now with Karate Champ. I prototyped a discrete copy of the sound section for DK as a separate PCB. I haven't had the PCB made yet, but can anyone comment on whether this could work? Hi retroidroid, you've made a mistake in your testing - 511 is the horizontal resolution not vertical. 240 is the number of rows.

Of course you are correct.

When the game is set to "De-Interlacer Hi-Res: On" it must be outputting 511 x 480, since it uses the 31KHz mode lacks visible scan-lines or flickering.

I have a Wells Gardner 27d9200 tri-sync arcade monitor in my MiSTer Cabinet. If I run Tapper at native resolution ("vga_scaler=0") out of the VGA port on the IO board, I get the following output from MiSTer, based on what my monitor reports: With "De-Interlacer Hi-Res: Off", MiSTer banner reports 511x240 15.78KHz, 59.7Hz. What kind of technical background do you have that you felt like you could take this on? Just curious.
