Re: What Are the Reasons to Own a MiSTer Without a CRT?

CRTs won't go anywhere among a small group of older tech enthusiasts. Them becoming trendy is what I'm criticizing. It causes prices to get outrageously inflated and that small group of tech enthusiasts - which I most definitely also represent - gets slowly excluded from their own hobby. This has already happened with arcade PCBs, and both share t...

Re: What Are the Reasons to Own a MiSTer Without a CRT?

I am a CRT snob, just like I am a MiSTer snob. I just like the fact that everything is more "real" instead of layers upon layers of stuff to closely simulate real. Knowing that it is a real CRT alone gives me the goosebumps that no LCD ever could. GroovyMiSTer, etc. is amazing, but I prefer actual FPGA hardware for constructing the conso...

Re: What Are the Reasons to Own a MiSTer Without a CRT?

These advantages don't really exist anymore. MiSTer nowadays can produce a very convincing CRT-like picture on a near-zero latency monitor and the experience of using it is like a console/arcade cab, just power it on and start a game and it works . The shaders on the MiSTer are great, but no match for a real CRT picture. And apart from the filters...

Re: What Are the Reasons to Own a MiSTer Without a CRT?

I'm going to be honest: The fad to have CRTs is bizarre hipster shit. I've had plenty of CRTs for a long time. Aside from simple nostalgia, their main technical advantages over modern displays are zero latency (hopefully also with mode switching) and the picture looks really nice with retro games. These advantages don't really exist anymore. MiSTer...

Re: VGA Mode Changing for 720x400 and 640x400

I tried these video modes in my ini now and for me, a lot of games just crash on start (with the top 300 from flynnsbit). E.g. Beyond Castle Wolfenstein crashes in the start screen Commander Keen 5 crahes on the start screen Earthworm Jim is crashing.... and others... Is that only for me? Re: MiSTer Laggy

Well alright, I came up with a roundabout way to determine if a given core runs with low latency on my TV or not. I have another VRR capable monitor and an HDMI splitter, and forcing VRR on happens to work for both, TV just ignores it. Cores with 240p test suite are simplest to test since it has a lag test tool for this specific purpose, but taking...

Re: 1440p on a LG 32GK850G-B?

At least LG TVs I've checked don't support 1920x1440 mode - but they DO support both 2560x1440 and 1920x1200. Latter looks very nice though. You don't need integer scaling anymore, adaptive scanlines and other video filters are very good at hiding non-integer scaling problems. If you use 1920x1200, you'll need to setup a custom aspect ratio of 24:2...

Re: MiSTer Laggy

I have a TV without VRR support and it has low latency only with 60 or 50Hz signal. Since my TV lacks ability to tell the input signal refresh rate, trying to figure out which cores match this description is proving tricky. I don't quite know what precisely qualifies as "flat 60Hz". Using CVT-RB, practically nothing is ever precisely 60Hz...

Re: The Result of My Search for a Great MiSTer Display

This is a bit of a curveball, so take it with a pinch of salt. My "great display" turned out to be the cheapest LG 65" 4K I could find a few years ago, iirc 650 EUR. I had no intention of using it for gaming, but it turned out to have almost no perceivable latency and syncs to everything I've thrown at it, with the unfortunate excep...

Re: Classic Controllers and SNAC?

Ultimatemister now has a Daemonbite adapter for the wiimote plug: https://ultimatemister.com/product/ultimate-daemon-x1-classic/ This should get the desired 1ms input lag. You can also use them through a Wiimote using a bluetooth dongle, input latency chart claims roughly 10ms (?) input lag for this setup. Not ideal, but decent for a wireless setup.

Re: Global FIlters?

Notable exception is the missing gamma configuration preset. No idea why it's omitted, but the limitation can be circumvented. In /media/fat/config/, files named setname _gamma.cfg save the per-game gamma setting. Those can apparently be simply copied from one game to another, though I wouldn't be surprised if all cores didn't support it. FWIW, I'm...

You can set custom resolutions in core specific config.

For instance, 4x integer mode (1536x1024) with CVT-RBv1 timings for use with Irem M62/M72 specifically:

Code: Select all

video_mode=1536,48,32,80,1024,3,10,14,98068

This person goes on to say most ppl leave it on mono, but I strongly disagree. I pretty much always use the stereo mode.

I've installed a pot for controlling the mono/stereo mix of channels, and having some amount of stereo separation is definitely nicer than pure mono. But pure mono is also nicer than 100% stereo separation.

Re: NG.DEV ROM Ripping for MiSTer? (Gunlord & Kraut Buster)

Disclaimer: This is based on hearsay rather than established fact, so take it with a grain of salt. Ive been told these games contain custom IC logic (fpga?) which is doing some heavy lifting for the game engine. This means dumping ROMs would be just the start, all the custom logic would need to be separately reverse engineered and re-implemented. ...

Re: Neo Geo CPU Overclocking?

What needs to be fixed about it? The core meets timing requirements when I compile trbocode's latest version. I don't think doubling the clock is anywhere near the equivalent of what Koston's mods to his own boards are though. The current build is like clocking the board to 24MHz which is a bit excessive given 12MHz is the default. In my tests, 18...
