Re: MiSTer Vs Original Nintendo Battletoads Clinger-Winger The Ultimate Lag Test

Dunno why I don't see many people mention it. It has the best latency on paper based on limited testing but some people don't like the feel/build quality and it's been discontinued so the price has gone up a bit. Originally it was $10 USD shipped. Now going prices for used ones are often $25-$40 (usually at least $30 when you include shipping) and...

Re: MiSTer Vs Original Nintendo Battletoads Clinger-Winger The Ultimate Lag Test

The uploader of that video mentioned that he didn't actually use an original controller with his MiSTer setup to beat that level. It was a Hori Fighting Commander, which is nowhere near the best in terms of input lag from what I've seen in the spreadsheet. That's a bit of a relief for me, because I was dreading the thought of needing to buy origin...

Re: HDMI versus VGA I/O board video quality for computer CRT

I'm not sure if it would work with Mike Chi's device either however I am cautiously optimistic because it is a powered device ... I was wondering if you could give me any tips/advice on how I could get this to work? Unfortunately the VGA2NTSC is an open source project and not just a product Mike sells. If you want one, you either have to order the...

Re: Is MiSTer FPGA Overkill For My Needs?

May just use a cheap arcade stick for arcade cores and any computer cores that mainly used a joystick and get something like a 8bitdo M30 for everything that more commonly uses a pad. Great choices! Make sure you opt for the 2.4g version of the M30 and not the bluetooth edition if you go that route; the Bluetooth edition is great in wired mode and...

Re: Is MiSTer FPGA Overkill For My Needs?

Well I've now ordered the parts for a Mister FPGA. The DE10 seems to have gone up significantly in price recently but I've been reading that there could be a general chip shortage well into 2022 so that might mean waiting a very long time for those prices to come down again. So I just decided to take the hit. Oh wow, nice! I'm surprised based on w...

Re: Is MiSTer FPGA Overkill For My Needs?

On the subject of lag, then versus now... I wonder if the early days of Emulation being done on CRT's combined with lower overhead operating systems and less complex hardware (even Genecyst, NESticle, and no$gmb, etc... in MS-DOS on a 486DX4 for my first emulators) actually might have shown reduced lag. Maybe that's why we didn't notice it as much...

Re: Is MiSTer FPGA Overkill For My Needs?

Thanks for everyone's input. Regarding the low latency of the Mister that everyone mentions - does this also apply if using a LCD TV via HDMI or is it really to do with viewing on a CRT? I would be using a LCD so I wonder if then the Mister would suffer just the same as a Pi would. I wouldn't be buying the analog IO. If I go for either it would be...

Re: What "fb_terminal" does and should I care?

Can somebody explain what this framebuffer option does, appart form displaying the update on the CRT? Why is it not 0 by default? Should I care for cores? It enables a framebuffer for the main menu and the commandline terminal (which is also where the update scripts run) so you don't necessarily have to worry about it for games, no. The framebuffe...

Re: Is MiSTer FPGA Overkill For My Needs?

it is a lot more expensive and I'm unsure whether I would care about the extra accuracy. I don't like fighting games where the input lag probably suffers most. It's impossible to know without trying it and it's not cheap enough just to take a punt on and test out. I'll be completely honest with you, I love my MiSTer but I don't think you're going ...

Re: SCART RGB Lead for the MiSTer Analog I/O

My set-up is on a Sony PVM with BNC for RGB, paired with a SCART Matrix switcher. I already have one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/193398140176?hash=item2d076d6d10:g:tQQAAMXQAEFSD-4B Therefore I'll need the input for the Mister I/O to be VGA while the output is SCART. Ahh fair enough. If you don't have any luck with ordering from Retro Access...

Re: HDMI versus VGA I/O board video quality for computer CRT

Should I use my working HDMI to VGA adapter with the Mister? Sure, why not? There's lots of video modes available to set in the INI config file that would work great with your monitor. Should I buy the analog I/O board with the 15 pin VGA connector? Probably not, you already have something that works, there's plenty of options for resolutions that...

Re: SCART RGB Lead for the MiSTer Analog I/O

From what I've seen, they're planning on opening back up for orders tomorrow (May 2nd, 2021) so I'd check back then. But if you don't have luck with them, the good news is pretty much any cable capable of carrying RGBs that has the H-sync line connected to SCART output's sync line will do. The cables are just sets of conductors with no other compon...
