Re: When/Why Did MiSTer Start Running DE10 So Hot?

I've heard a lot of stories about people ruining their DE10-Nano over the years but can't think of an example of one overheating to the point of failure. As Aberu said, the chips it uses are rated for much harsher environments than we subject them to, so I don't think it's cause for alarm.

Yes, CHD support is definitely on the list of things to do, probably soon now that the core is running a lot more smoothly.

Re: Cyberball? Just Curious

Video resoution : 672x240 Nothing about those specs indicate it would be a particularly difficult game to implement except for this. Cyberball was a double cabinet with two displays, so an implementation would have to account for this and maybe even used the analog and digital split that the 2 player GB/GBA cores use. There's a single-screen Cyber...

Re: Well Nobody Saw This Coming! Nintendo 64 Core Announced

I guess the only positive out of this system is that not counting region variants, there's less than 400 games and probably less than 200 worth playing. :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: I assumed this meant fewer games means less time spent debugging edge cases, and not an attempt to complain about the N64's limited library. Re: Discussion and Development of a 'MiSTer 2.0' Modular Hardware Platform

I've long thought that the best option would be developing a FPGA hat for a Raspberry Pi. A daughterboard with FPGA and dedicated SDRAM that could run everything MiSTer can run plus a SNAC port to ensure zero input lag. The RPi would serve as the "HPS" for the system, doing all the OS and data handling tasks that don't need to run on the ...

Re: Is Support for HD Textures Packs Possible?

Yeah for what Mesen seems to be doing to work on MiSTer would require a specific theoretical chip (ideally one that's already well-implemented in FPGA) that can be added to the NES core along with games altered to use this chip. What's interesting to me is there's already a much easier way to give NES games a graphical boost: The SNES. The SNES is ...

Re: Sega Saturn Core in Development

I did notice some things with the new core. The merman area at the beginning of SotN turns yellow for some reason. The Sonic World area in Sonic Jam is rendering white on the ground. I've noticed the white ground in Sonic Jam in previous versions. I suspect it's because the ground is being handled by a different chip that isn't fully integrated ye...

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

I respectfully disagree - the reason the core is where it is today is that it is quite efficient because it's based on a software implementation that cut a lot of corners in the interest of performance at the expense of compatibility. A 'proper' 80486 core would only be more complex and slower, but more accurate. Given the nature of 486/586 and ti...

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

Like Robert said, a new x86 PC core could be marginally better than ao486 if built for MiSTer from the ground up, but that would be a lot of work for only a minor improvement. Even if someone managed to implement a Pentium-esque chip on MiSTer it would still be too slow to run late 90s 2D classics like Age of Empires or Rollercoaster Tycoon or Bald...

Re: Is it possible to make a MiSTer frontend via a front end core?

I would like to stress, yet again, that the only people asking for this are asking for an entirely optional alternative to the current mister menu. If you're not interested in wasting time scraping game libraries and building databases, that's totally fine. No one wants to force you to do that. No one wants to replace the current OSD, or alter the ...

Re: Developing Core for Panasonic 3DO

I've seen quite a few developers, including Robert Peip, start the development process with a cycle-accurate software emulator that they use to build the FPGA core. I suspect Roman, given his experience with embedded hardware, gets that. The approach of porting an emulator to a SoC board and then altering the emulator to rely more and more on the F...

Re: Is it possible to make a MiSTer frontend via a front end core?

Possible or not i do see one problem with this. And that is depending on the GUI core "FPGA size" some cores would probably be to big to be able to use the GUI core as an overlay. Basically for an overlay GUI core you have to ruin both cores at once and if a bigger core is running there would not be enough FPGA space left to run an overl...

Re: Replacement of ao486?

Unlike say, the Nintendo 64, I don't think anyone has ever given a serious argument that a Pentium PC was impossible on MiSTer. The problem is ao486 already exists and is largely good enough for 90% of what folks want. It would be a large undertaking, at least as much work as Playstation and Saturn, to produce something that's only marginally bette...

When I think "Hardware rendering" I imagine support for graphics and resolutions akin to what other retro game consoles can do. Honestly, given that the de10-nano can r...

Re: MiSTer Super Attract Mode (SAM) is now available - the first game screensaver for your MiSTer!

Related to the discussion earlier about SAM autoplay not stopping when you run MiSTer_SAM_off.sh, I perpetually have a problem with SAM starting while I'm in the middle of running Update All. Running Mister_SAM_off doesn't solve this for me, I usually have to uninstall SAM to make sure Update_All completes successfully.

Re: Hardware Rendering Possible?

AFAIK there simply isn't enough communication bandwidth between the ARM and FPGA sides of the house to make such a thing possible. I disagree, per Intel's specs there's a high-performance AXI bridge between the FPGA and HPS. In fact, it's this very interconnect that makes a lot of what MiSTer does possible, for instance the CD cores stream data fr...

Re: Ideas for a Lower Cost FPGA Board System Based On ECP5

I think RPi + FPGA is probably the future of hardware emulation, and I look forward to seeing how this project develops. The biggest benefit of the De10-nano over other prototyping board is the HDMI port, being able to rely on a Raspberry Pi's hardware instead seems like a slam dunk.

I've been interested in the I-PAC Ultimate I/O board and I want to get feedback from anyone who has used it for their MiSTer. The menu core already has a sort of graphics acceleration running on the FPGA, at least it has a framebuffer which I believe is based on the software that comes with the De10-nano. It's probably possible to use the FPGA to build a more fully-featured GPU along with linux drivers, but we're still talking about a 800mhz ARM with 1 gig of RAM, so anyt...

personally i'd want to see a pci-e card for my pc that allows me to run cores locally on my OS, depending on how well things would work concerning input latency and such. I agree with this. That's a wild idea. There are cartridge dumpers like the Joey Junior that mount the cartridge's contents as a USB drive. Oh, these are excellent. The improved adaptive filter options were a welcome change when they came out earlier this year, but then I never saw them get a lot of official recognition. It's good to have these as a baseline for the various cores, and then folks can make changes to their taste or use these presets as a template for their own presets.
