Re: Castlevania III European PAL Version Glitching

I just tried my flash cart compatible copy of the PAL version and I'm getting the same thing. No proper scrolling in the intro or in game. The odd thing is it's only if the system is set to PAL. PAL version of CV3 on NTSC system? No problem. NTSC version on PAL system? Same graphical issues. Doesn't appear to be related to the ROM but just if you'r...

Re: MiSTer FPGA no longer loading cores

Well when it comes to troubleshooting, sometimes it helps to start simple. Remove all the extras you're plugging in. Start with just a single USB joystick or USB keyboard. Try a core that doesn't use the SDRAM like the Genesis core. If that works, then try a core that uses SDRAM. If that works, start trying your extras one by one. If you don't have...

Re: Keyboard with spinner?

This kind of knob looks to be a programmable device rather than specifically a mouse input. There's probably a way to program it as just a simple mouse movement but then you have to take a step back to ask why you're doing it in the first place. It's not a spinner which means it's not going to free spin like a good arcade spinner can. It might even...

Re: Can the MiSTer output two different resolutions when using HDMI and analogue output?

It can but it depends on the vga_scaler setting in the ini.If you're using the vga_scaler option (vga_scaler=1) then the analog out will mirror the output of the HDMI settings. If you're not using vga_scaler (vga_scaler=0), then the analog out gets the native resolution and refresh rate of the core while HDMI gets whatever settings you set. So if y...

Re: Rotating the display

The standard for vertical arcade game cores is to have the flip exactly the same as the original did. Real arcade machines didn't always flip their vertical the same way. Some games did clockwise and some did counterclockwise. As the MiSTer cores are recreating that accuracy, that means some games will be vertical one way or vertical the other way....

Re: Does Bandit Kings of Ancient China Work on NES Core?

Can confirm the US version of Bandit Kings of Ancient China works on the NES core. Whoever tried it must not have sourced a good backup. MiSTer cores are as picky as real hardware when it comes to the files that are loaded on it. If it's not good enough for a flash cart then it's not likely to load on MiSTer. Software emulators are less picky so an...

While I personally agree that using .neo files is the easiest and sometimes more reliable for new people, they are definitely not required. And as already stated, a full set of converted files have been archived. If the conversion application disappears, it won't be a terrible impact for MiSTer users. But potentially the future holds a different op...

Re: Why Doesn’t the Scan Doubler Work With PSX Core?

Scandoubler is an outdated and basic system back before the current filters system was implemented which are found under the Video Processing menu. There's no reason to use Scandoubler as any of the effects it can create can be replicated with more control and options with the filters system. If I had to take a guess as to why it doesn't work with ...

Re: VGA Scanline Generator

The thing about an external scanline generator is that it's going to place them without any care to the pixels. There are usually adjustment buttons or switches but then many console and arcade systems don't share the same resolution or scale. As you change between cores, you'd have to adjust it again and again and again. Compare that to the MiSTer...

Re: Video Issue

You don't want to use the Scandoubler FX option. That is a old and outdated video setting that doesn't work too well. It was a quick and basic solution that has since been superseded by the current filter features. They're found in the "system" menu when you have a core loaded under Video Processing. It should be one menu screen to the ri...

Re: HDMI to S-Video Question for CRT TV

It's best to keep in mind the context of the statements. The analog output from the standard IO board isn't bad quality by any means. But old analog signals are technically inferior in quality to modern digital standards. Of course an analog video signal out the VGA connector is going to be lesser than what's possible with HDMI. And of course analo...

Re: Questions about MT-32 Pi or Pi-Midi

The cable length between the mt32-pi and the MiSTer is dependent on whether or not the User IO port is also powering the Pi and hat. If the Pi is getting power separately through its own power port, then the cable can be longer because it's strictly data transfer. If the MiSTer User IO port is powering the Pi, then it has to be very short to handle...

Take this with a grain of salt from a non-programmer, but I don't see it possible with the current version of ScummVM or DOSBox. I can't imagine there's any code to both program and take advantage of an FPGA chip. So as far as either program is concerned, it doesn't know the FPGA chip exists nor what it would even do with it. What's necessary comes down to your own personal preferences and what you're going to use it for. You said this is for a custom MiSTer case so it doesn't sound like you're going to use it as a synthesizer replacement (connecting to real PC hardware or MIDI keyboards). Anything that has additional functions for using as a synthesizer will go to wast...

Re: EmulationStation Interface for MiSTer and a NES Style Case

There is a different expectation that comes with MiSTer. Unlike a lot of other projects that are interested in flash and fancy, MiSTer focuses on a hardware like experience. That means fast, closer to instant load from a cold boot and quick loading of cores. The DE10-Nano board was not selected because it could handle a full GUI with video playback...

From: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX_MiSTer - "Features: MSX2/Plus/3." It already is an MSX2 core. I just loaded Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2 game) and F1 Spirit 3D Special (MSX2+ game) on the core through sofarun on MiSTer. The MAP:E argument is for Extended MIDI instead of MAP:B for Basic MIDI. I didn't grow up with any MIDI based synthesizers so I'm not too familiar with the differences. However, I have noticed Windows 3.1 also recognizes Basic and Extended settings and it seemed to be a difference of capabilities like number of simultaneous sound channels. At least...

Re: MT-32 works with Amiga core, but not with AO486?

For my setup with AO486, I'm not using SoftMPU. I just have the AUTOEXEC lines to configure MIDI with the "SoundBlaster". SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E I can't recall if I pulled that line from a AO486 setup guide or an mt32-pi setup guide for MiSTer but that's all I have in my config for MIDI settings. Looking it up, the SYNTH:1 appears to corr...

Re: Is a Dual RAM Setup Worth It?

The two SDRAM boards are meant to be installed directly on the DE10 nano connectors, you don't need an I/O board for that. If you need an I/O board, only the digital one is shaped in a way to expose both the GPIO connectors of the DE10 nano (with an analog I/O board you can only fit 1 SDRAM). If your have 1 SDRAM board, as it's usually the case, y...

Re: Building my first MiSTer Is There a Passively Cooled Case That Isn’t Designed Around the IO Board?

An IO board can still be beneficial even if you're not looking to get the analog version. An IO board will get you an optical audio out (miniTOS on analog, full size on digital) which can be useful for some audio setups. Even though most actions of the IO board buttons can be replicated on a fully configured controller and the OSD menu, the LED lig...

I like to go between a VGA monitor for the AO486 core and my Commodore 1702 for the console cores so the fact that I can do both without needing to open up the case to change a jumper for an adapter is great. If you're looking to cover all basics for console games, that's correct. You could always go through the games you want to use on the build and see if you need any of the extra buttons in the first place. It's possible to not need all of that in the first place.
