Re: Shadow Mask Descriptions / Explanations / Information

Shadow masks are fairly limited, mostly due to limitations in output resolution. You should think of shadow masks as an effect to give your image/pixels a bit of 'character'. It follows then that really, you should just try out a couple of masks and stick to the one(s) you like. It's not really about simulation ...although you can achieve results t...

Re: Reducing the space taken by the HTGDB Gamepacks with symlinks

I'd recommend mounting the samba share directly on your mister. It saves you the hassle of manually having to transfer files.

An alternative is using hardlinks, which could be more convenient depending on your use case:

Code: Select all

hardlink [GAMEDIR]
HTGDB is a great initiative for organising your roms. See the link.

Re: V2 Shadow Mask Example

Glad you like them! I'm currently organising my masks to allow for some choice in terms of brightness but also in the level of definition (ie. darkness) of the mask. These correspond to the brightness of the 'on' state and 'off' state of the 'subpixels' respectively. The challenge with these masks is that the image gets (really) dark. However I do ...

V2 Shadow Mask Example

With the arrival of Version 2 of Shadow Masks much more has become possible when it comes to finetuning the masks. For a tldr of the new shadow masks: there are two major additions: The brightness of the color values can now be adjusted for both the 'on' state and the 'off' state The grid has been extended to 16x16 Essentially, existing masks can n...

Re: Where to get the new shadow mask filter?

For now you can find more on github . Sorgelig has provided a VGA example, as you can see below. You can add this as Shadow Mask and it should work with the latest version of Mister. On my 1440p output the filter basically looks like a more well defined VGA.txt filter. It certainly seems an improvement, but I'm mostly curious for the benefits of th...

Re: Where to get the new shadow mask filter?

Shadow Masks V2 are apparently here. > Shadow Mask v2: > > Add Improved shadow mask including per pixel 32 levels of brightness and up to 16x16 mask size. This should give much better flexibility and finer effects. Sounds nice, but I haven't found any examples or documentation yet. I can't acces the Mister discord, maybe there's more there. Does an...

Re: Where to get the new shadow mask filter?

Use the update_all script. It will get you a bunch of filters.

You can also just download the Mister Shadow Masks folder on github and add them yourself.

Re: MiSTer bundle from aliexpress

Did you check the reviews of the product as sold by the seller? Aliexpress is a marketplace, there's an endless variety of sellers that sell all kinds of products. There is nothing inherently wrong (or right) with 'Aliexpress', because Aliexpress itself does not sell or produce these products. Got my SD RAM from a seller on Ali and it is excellent....

Re: What componensts do I need for full MiSTer setup?

The Mt32 Pi is best used with an IO board as it makes the connection so much easier. You just plug into the port on the IO Board. If the Saturn or the PSX core need dual ram and you can live without dual outputing analog and digital signals at the same time then a Digital IO board would be best as this is the only IO board that will support dual r...

Re: What componensts do I need for full MiSTer setup?

A ‘full’ setup is definitely more than most people would want or have.. full would also include MT32-PI, realtime clock, all the SNAC gear, a CRT… Pretty sure the intention was ‘standard’ setup. Which as stated above varies by vendor, but in general covers: DE10-Nano & power supply 128MB SDRAM I/O board (analog or digital) USB hub Case USB con...

Re: Favorite Shadow Masks

Really like the effect of OPs fake scanlines. For integer scaling with real scanlines, I settled on Tonuric Masks/Filters/1x/Mirrored/KYMC, though to be honest, the effect is way too suble to notice unless pixel peeping. Anyway it works well at 1440p with 6x scaling and CRT Simulation Svideo scanlines. I also really like Thin RGB lines as shadow ma...

Re: What componensts do I need for full MiSTer setup?

It really only depends on what OP wants to do. There are only a few truly necessary components: DE10 NANO RAM (at least 32MB is recommended, but not even necessary for some cores, so... technically this is optional) SD card (usually comes with DE10 NANO) Power adapter (you'll get a US power outlet one with the DE10) USB OTG or micro USB adapter Tha...

Re: Shadow Mask development reference post CRT close up shadowmasks as refrence

Great idea! We should use some kind of standardised reference image. This would make both the comparisons, as well as the subsequent development of shadow mask filters a lot easier. A pattern from the 240p Test Suite might work well; such as the SMPTE Color Bars & EBU Color bars: SMPTEColor.png Or the Color Bleed Check: Bleed1.png Bleed2.png (I...

Re: Where to get the new shadow mask filter?

Thanks. Had not realized the different blending requirements due to resolution difference, but that makes sense. Honestly, I don't spend a lot of time on the Mega Drive, but I didn't like the dithering. Had already gotten used to the fact that it's either a lot of dithering, or a LOT of blur. At least with shadow masks the blending actually looks g...

Re: Where to get the new shadow mask filter?

... Good eye, yeah there's a composite blend Horizontal scanline 75 filter being used in conjunction with the RYCB shadow mask, this one looks best to me at 1080p currently (I've only tried the few filters from the test build so far). Really cleans up Zangief's 'Jail Bar' dithered floor and the softness is somewhat reminiscent of my Trinitron cons...

Which settings did you use for this? Looks like some horizontal blending is going on, but I cannot find the right filters on Mister.
