Re: Q1 Computer Core Possible?

That does look like an interesting machine, though I'm not sure how complete the currently available information and ROM dumps are. The unit documented by The Byte Attic is a later Z80 version ca. late 1978 ("7837" date code on the UC1671 chip), and the schematic is unfortunately only for the main board. That might be enough to do somethi...

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

When I was a kid, in our local arcade somebody figured out you could skip the first level by climbing the first ladder, going right a little and sort of back jumping. Mario then would kind of fall through the edge instead of crashing. Has anybody ever heard of this trick? It was nearly 40 years ago and my recollection of it is pretty hazy but I'm ...

Re: ST-V Core?

I suppose that's what I get leaving an unbelievably old version of the core in the root of my SD card and not really paying attention. Just for grins, I loaded an ST-V BIOS on a non-ancient Saturn core, and it does actually display something, but it's a factory test mode that doesn't seem to accept pad input. It probably wants input through the afo...

Re: Mars Matrix Weird Behaviour?

My time with Mars Matrix was with the Dreamcast port roughly ( checks notes ) 20 years ago, but I'm also in the "surprised if the speed of this game is not correct" camp. It has a hyperactive visual style that feels like the spacetime continuum is being featured on an episode of "Will it Blend?", and it definitely takes some tim...

Re: ST-V Core?

The ST-V hardware was identical to the Saturn, it had the same ammount of RAM. The difference was that the ST-V games were stored on ROM-Cartridges instead of CD-ROM. Any potential ST-V core would have to change the CD-ROM interface to the hardware responsible for reading the data from the cartridge. Based on a combination of my fading memories of...

Re: KOF95 SP 2017 rom hack

I'm not enough of a Neo Geo expert to be 100% sure, but I think this hack won't run on MiSTer as-is because it seems to use a non-standard memory map (Final Burn Alpha, HBMAME). Based on the address range it uses, I think it might have worked on an original Neo Geo board using custom hardware connected to the memory card slot.

I'm neither a Karate Champ expert nor a heavy user of arcade cores, but I think it's already supported. My system has "Karate Champ (US VS version, set 1)" through "Karate Champ (US VS version, set 4)" as well as "Taisen Karate Dou (Japan VS version)" under "Arcade/alternatives/Karate Champ".

Does anyone know a good way to identify a charger that can actually fast-charge a DualSense? Legacy USB power from a hub or PC port has worked consistently for me, but is slow. Re: Comfast Wi-Fi Dongle Not Getting Recognized

Sometimes they switch the chipsets in these cheap wifi adapters without changing the model numbers. This is true, and sure enough, the Comfast web site has separate product pages for CF-812AC and CF-812AC V2 , although the V1 is oddly labeled as "new" while the V2 is not. Either way, I doubt that just adding the ID to the existing driver...

Re: Apple IIGS MiSTer Core Progress

From documentation (I didn't see an obviously valid way to test this on MAME or KEGS), it looks like the mouse card was officially supported on IIgs, but most likely very few real-world systems had that configuration. The support was probably intended for people who bought the (unpopular, now an elusive collector's item) IIe-to-IIgs conversion and ...

Re: How Difficult Is It to Add Vertical Flip to a Core?

As others have said, it's not an ideal first project, but you can probably pull it off if you're reasonably persistent and curious. Coming from a software perspective, the biggest potential pitfall I'd suggest watching out for is that while most video hardware has a fairly obvious vertical position counter somewhere, simply reversing that counter p...

Re: Apple II Core

I think the Open/Closed Apple key reset functions are implemented in the ROM. I got them to work with the corresponding joystick buttons (no I/O board, and the emulated user button combo seems to override the individual keys), so I don't think there's anything to add to the core for that. The Control key interlock was hardware (which apparently cou...

I don't remember the exact details, but back when I tried to add 2-drive support I had a couple of problems that were something to do with the track buffer not being cleared/reloaded correctly. In theory only one drive per Disk II card can be active/spinning at any given time (physical momentum of the spindle notwithstanding), so only one track buf...

The GME format is a proprietary format used by the long-obsolete DexDrive peripheral. The MiSTer PSX core uses a raw memory card image. There is a website that can convert some GME files, but for others it said the file wasn't in the correct format: https://savefileconverter.com/#/ps1/dexdrive

Re: The secondary SD Card

I came to MiSTer too late to have any direct experience of this, but I assume that a major motivation was the history of preexisting designs that directly targeted non-SoC boards like the DE2-115 or DE0-CV. Those designs had to incorporate their own SD interfaces and file-loading functions because there was no host framework to leverage. That being...

From skimming MAME's "ddragon3.cpp", one might reasonably call it "Technos 1990 hardware", and whatever one might feel about any given Technos game, I'm fully in favor of preserving Technos's entire catalog by any means necessary. Re: Cores that dont need ram module?

The latency for the FPGA fabric to access the HPS RAM is higher, and the rules governing the overall timing are more complex because it's shared with the ARM cores. Some system architectures are relatively easy to adapt to this, whereas with others trying to do so is almost guaranteed to cause something to malfunction. Basically, some (sub)systems ...

Re: LLTPHack with SA-1

It appears that the core is only built with 128 KB of cartridge SRAM. There are further dependencies on this address width in the SA1 code, and I have no idea whether the design would still fit if the size were increased: localparam BSRAM_BITS = 17; // 1Mbits edit: I managed to bodge out the SA1 dependencies, and it looks like 256 KB of cartridge S...

Creating an empty file does seem to work, although it's worth keeping in mind that PS1 memory cards need to be formatted before a game can save to them. I know some games are able to handle formatting the card (and might even nicely ask permission before doing so), but I don't know how widespread that is. edit: It occurs to me that I didn't word th...

As far as I know, jotego basically does a public release when he no longer considers a core to be in a "beta" state. The core is fairly stable now from a casual perspective, but I believe there's still at least one major bug that hasn't been fixed yet.

Re: TMNT is Getting Closer to Run on MiSTer

Looking at MAME, the closest games I see to TMNT are Cue Brick, M.I.A., and Punk Shot, but I don't think any of them would be a simple ROM swap. Punk Shot's sound hardware is closer to Sunset Riders, Turtles in Time, and The Simpsons (including a K053260 rather than a K007232), and the others seem to have their K052109s wired a bit differently. Bas...

It occurs to me that although Haze said there are no confirmed later revisions, that was 11 years ago and he might have only been considering actual cartridge/PCB dumps. It might be a long shot, but I don't think it's out of the question that the NGCD, Wii Virtual Console, or ACA NEOGEO releases have a fixed version of the ROM.

Re: Add an Overclock Option to Avoid Slowdowns

The SNES core's turbo mode switches back to stock speed for some number of cycles after a register access, the idea presumably being that only loops that are purely in RAM/ROM can be accelerated without significant side effects. I assume that accounts for some of its compatibility.

Haze's comment says that the missing code is to handle "special endings". I'm not sure exactly what that means (and Google/GameFAQs aren't helping much), but the phrasing wouldn't make much sense unless there are unaffected "normal endings". StrategyWiki has this to say (the only description of the requirements that I could read...

I managed to reproduce this in Total Replay running on both MiSTer and AppleWin. I did need to use the infinite lives cheat to actually make it to level 3, because level 2 is just brutal. To make sure it wasn't a bug in the Total Replay cheat (which patches code), I also turned it off and accomplished something similar by editing the lives location...
