Re: Advice about PVMs

Wow thank you for the really detailed and insightful reply. I trust it will be helpful to other members looking at the thread later of course too.

Pictures would be great if you are kind enough to post them. Once again thanks so much for taking the time to post.

Re: Advice about PVMs

Some brilliant advice and interesting opinions. I still get the impression that PVMs for most people have the edge over an RGB CRT Trinitron but that for some the latter's more familiar feel (going back to gaming in the 80s and 90s) is better. And that the current outrageous prices simply are not warranted. If there are any more opinions from anybo...

Re: Advice about PVMs

So there seems to be a feeling that the picture on a PVM is as good as it gets (notwithstanding small differences across models I expect) but that the RGB via Scart, particularly on later Sony trinitrons common in the EU, is pretty close. And the edge the PVM has is not worth paying a lot for. For example, the £500+ some 20 inch PVMs go for simply ...

Re: Advice about PVMs

It is so difficult! The attraction of a PVM is always there in the background….

I’d love to hear any more thoughts from members who own both a CRT and a PVM. Would you pay (say) £500 for a 20 inch PVM now if you only owned your CRT?

Let’s hear the verdict!

Re: Advice about PVMs

Thank you all. So I gather that a PVM will be clearer and sharper than a CRT (a generalisation but roughly all else being equal) and that this may be an unfamiliar experience for those of us who grew up playing on the ZX Spectrum etc on a CRT. It seems as though I should be thinking more towards sticking with what I have. You are right that PVM pri...

Re: Advice about PVMs

That’s very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to respond in detail. The CRT I currently have is from the early 2000s and it has RGB through Scart. It is the KV21FV1U combined VCR model and I don’t like the fact it has a VCR much but the picture through RGB seems good. From what you say perhaps I would not get a much better experience with a PV...

Advice about PVMs

Hi all. I am currently connecting my mister to a Sony CRT. I have been looking at PVMs online and am thinking about buying one in the future funds allowing. I have two questions really and would appreciate any advice. Firstly, I understand that I can connect the mister to a PVM using the VGA port on the I/o board with a VGA to BNC cable like the ca...

Re: Audio out to a CRT using a vga to RGB Scart cable

Thanks for the reply. It turns out I had the global volume low which is quite loud through the amp. Ricardo (top man) at ultimatemister, like you, suggested I check. Surprisingly this was causing the volume on the TV to be almost inaudible and as the TV volume was at max every bit of interference was being picked up. With the mister global volume a...

Audio out to a CRT using a vga to RGB Scart cable

I have another question perhaps somebody has an answer to. I am using a high quality cable to send RGB Scart to a Trinitron CRT https://ultimatemister.com/product/rgb-scart-cable/ The picture is fine but when I plug the 3.5mm stereo jack on the cable into the audio out on the mister the sound through the TV is massively interfered with and extremel...

Ah. I see. So the information screen is just for hdmi out. That makes sense. Thank you. Interestingly the video_mode setting messed up the hdmi but didn’t seem to change the CRT image.

I set a video_mode=256,240,60 and the information screen reports 256x240 6.4MHz 60.1Hz for the CRT so the resolution now matches.

Sony Trinitron Resolution and Frequency

Hi. I’m still learning about how to set the mister up properly and hoped to get some advice. I have just got a Sony Trinitron CRT and have connected it to the mister via the VGA port to Scart RGB using a cable from ultimatemister. I have my ini file set as below and the SOG switch on. composite_sync = 1 forced_scandoubler = 0 vga_scaler=0 I’ll use ...

Re: CRT Advice

Certainly my memory of CRT TVs is that many had Scart sockets. I only knew it as Scart back then and certainly didn’t know what RGB was! I do recall it being understood that Scart was a good picture though!!

Thanks. My thoughts were that any popular brand Scart enabled set would be OK. My memory on these things is sketchy. It’s been a long time since I’ve even been near a CRT TV!

Re: MiSTerFPGA.co.uk

I’d just like to give a massive thanks to Nat at MisterFPGA.co.uk. I recently bought a mister privately and had some issues getting a Snac adapter I bought from Nat to work with the digital io board. It worked fine with an analogue board and Nat offered to look at the digital board for me just to help out. He found an unsuccessful attempt by (I ass...

CRT Advice

I have been thoroughly enjoying my mister on an old 5:4 monitor and playing cores outputting almost exclusively 60hz signals although I have also loved playing ZX spectrum, C64 and Amiga games at 50hz too. I have learnt a bit about setting video modes in the ini file and had success changing resolutions and tinkering in other ways as well. I do lon...

Re: 1280x1024 Asus Monitor

Would that then give an RGB picture? Sorry, I'm just not sure if the scart input is RGB on UK TVs. I have tried to research this but I find that there is often conflicting information across different websites and the information does not always relate to the kind of CRT TV I would be able to get here in the UK I think! The situation is easier with...

Re: 1280x1024 Asus Monitor

In general you should use the panel's native resolution (1280x1024) and let mister scale. You will have a bunch of options how to do so. Generally 4x vertical scale will be achievable. The one catch I've had with older monitors is some that can display 70-75 hz but not at the native resolution. This is probably a result of them being compatible wi...

1280x1024 Asus Monitor

I have just got a mister and I am using an Asus VB199 5:4 monitor. The manual lists a bunch of resolutions and refresh rates. So I have been playing with the mister.ini file and setting different preset video modes and some custom modes for different cores too. I love the fact that I can set alt.ini files and settings for individual cores. It is gr...

If I connected the Mister to the monitor via the analogue io would that still introduce conversion delay?

Re: Total Novice Needs Help With a Monitor and MiSTer Output!

Thank you both so much. I am so grateful for your expertise. I feared the monitor may not be good enough to pair with the Mister although sometimes older monitors are OK for retro gaming I believe. In this case I will just have to use your advice and hope for the best. In the end I hope to buy a CRT TV anyway.
