Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

When I was a kid, in our local arcade somebody figured out you could skip the first level by climbing the first ladder, going right a little and sort of back jumping. Mario then would kind of fall through the edge instead of crashing. Has anybody ever heard of this trick? It was nearly 40 years ago and my recollection of it is pretty hazy but I'm ...

Re: Best All-Round Controller

Both the original SN30 Pro and SF30 Pro look like SNES/Super Famicom controllers respectively, and both support wired/wireless AND rumble. Just bear in mind that there are 2 types of SN30 Pro controllers. One is wired USB only (mine), and the other is both wireless, and wired. Yes, there's been at least a half a dozen different revisions over the ...

Yes, of course, that's the difference because, I didn't noticed you had the SN30 Pro, I have the SF30 Pro which looks like an SNES controller, has a detachable USB-C cable and it's wireless and wired. Re: Accuracy of the C64 core

Both of the emulators I noted are cycle-accurate (for what that means, which isn't what most people seem to think! All it means is that emulated instructions take the proper number of cycles!) and, to their credit, the VICE team over the past two years or so has used them as a reference to improve the accuracy of their own emulation, so all ships ...

I am pretty sure it works, but can't test it right now. Ultimate games usually didn't work on Spectrum 128 out of the box. If was necessary to enter the following command before loading: OUT 32765, 48 Try if this helps, if it works make sure you switch the core the ZX Spectrum 48K before loading. There is also a mod that works on 128K Spectrums, y...

Game compatibility for this core seems to be very hit and miss. I spent most of this afternoon going through my collection, and many of the best games on the system don't work (e.g. Bug Hunter 2, Fervour, Inferno (Paradise), Overload (Paradise)), and even when they did there were often technical issues (Legend of the Lost Temple, Zelanites). I als...

I'd recommend learning to use the mouse control, you can be far more effective in dogfights with pirates than with the keyboard. The trick is to turn on the dampers (auto-centering of pitch/roll), which are toggled on/off with caps lock.

Re: ZX Spectrum Core - Save Games / States

The DivMMC works by trapping execution at set addresses (for example, the IM1 interrupt vector at $0038 or the ROM tape loading routine at $0562) and quickly paging in it's own ROM to override/patch those routines. The rest of the time the on-board ROM of the Spectrum is used. It also forces 128k models to page in their 48k editor ROM at boot (also...

Re: MiSTer to Consumer CRT Direct Video RGB SCART Output Issues

One question remains: why me copy-pasting and using OP's mister.ini posted here breaks my display? It's bizarre, because there is nothing wrong with the ini itself. Something about text encoding? Possibly newline encoding. MiSTer.ini uses carriage return and line feed control characters (like Windows), whereas Linux uses just uses line feed. If yo...

One thought that comes to mind: is the image on an SD card? They're famously unreliable, especially cheap ones. Check the host Linux dmesg to see if the kernel is complaining about I/O errors of any kind. It's on a USB HDD. I just created another VHD and loaded 120 GB of games onto it and the very first boot I'm getting "Sector not found"...

Re: ZX Spectrum Core - Reading Games from Tape

Amazed any load. The Youtube videos will have compressed lossy sound. The human ear may not hear it but the computer will. Only pure wav files or other lossless formats should be used. Not in the case of a waveform as simple as FSK modulation. Lossy compression from a clean digital source like TZX at YouTube's typical bitrate is certainly better t...

Re: ZX Spectrum Core - Reading Games from Tape

This is most likely caused by there being insufficient amplitude for the ADC to register a 'high' signal level. You'll need to boost the volume as most of those videos on YouTube (from what I've seen) have the volume drastically reduced (presumably so as not to cause viewers' ears to bleed!). Here's an example of one video I downloaded and loaded i...

Re: Archie broken?

Are you trying to use it with a CRT? The VGA scaler is forced on recent versions of the core so it doesn't output 15Khz over Direct Video or the I/O board anymore (unless you configure a suitable modeline).

If this isn't the case, try re-downloading and replacing riscos.rom from the github and/or deleting CMOS.dat on your MiSTer.

I know it works in zasm and z80asm but I've tried to make the syntax and directives as generic as possible so it should work in most Z80 assemblers.

Re: Spectravideo 328: Converting a .cas to cart

Carts get mapped at the bottom of the address space ($0000-$7ffff for a 32k cart). They need to start with the opcodes for DI and LD SP,xxxx (F3 31) in order to run. So you need to copy the data from the cart to RAM. But that's not all - the game makes calls to the BASIC ROM, so that needs to be mapped back in before running the game code. But you ...

Looks fine on my MiSTer. Are you sure you aren't running the 48K model with ULA-128 or Pentagon timings? I'm curious. Did you set Fast Tape Load to Off when loading it? Because that's what fixed it for me. Nope, I loaded it using ESXDOS/DivMMC. But I was able to replicate the issue using a TAP instead. Then I tried switching the video timings to U...

Re: Shock megademo not working in 48K mode

I have tried to run the Shock megademo in 48K mode, but for some reason it shows wrong graphics. My guess is that it is detecting the 48K as if it was a 128K, because switching to 128K mode while the demo is running fixes it. Of course a 48K should not be detected as a 128K. Any idea what may be happening? For reference, here's a snapshot of how i...

Re: Rotating an Vertical Arcade core on a CRT?

That thread states that rotating the *analogue* output of the MiSTer can't be done - this is an important distinction. What the poster of that video is doing is converting the MiSTer's *digital* output (which can be freely rotated in the core settings) to analogue using that adapter. Also, from the comments section of the very video you linked:- @E...

Should work fine for the majority of cores with composite_sync=1 and direct_video=1 (or direct_video=0 if you're using an analogue I/O board) in your MiSTer.ini. No need to mess around with the scaler and modelines except for cores which force the scaler or cores which don't output native 15Khz at all. One thing is that you may find you get messed ...

This is a bit fiddly, but you can take advantage of the fact TOS can read and write 720k DOS format disks (FAT12) So using the Linux shell on the MiSTer you can create a floppy disk image:- # cd /media/fat/games/AtariST # dd if=/dev/zero of=transfer.st bs=737280 count=1 # mkdosfs -F 12 transfer.st You can mount it and put files in the disk image, t...

Some HDF files (i.e. those created on older emulators and on Arculator up to version 0.99) have a 512 byte header attached to the front of them, which needs removing if you intend to use them on a real Archie.

I thought that was only if you were using the scaler. I thought direct video meant outputting whatever resolution the core was designed for and to hell with your display.
The scaler is forced on in the ao486 core IIRC.
