Re: SNES core hangs/freezes after leaving intro running for a couple hours

Is the ROM in a ZIP file? If it's not it opens up the possibility of file corruption not being detected. When a file is unzipped it should check that the data extracted equals the CRC value expected. But when just loading a plain uncompressed ROM there is no way to know if a single bit is somehow flipped. Also SNES games generally don't have checks...

Mega Man X4 is working beyond what the compatibility list says now. Using version 20211215_17a7 the game played fine all the way through the stage select, picked web spider, completed it, and returned to the stage select.

Re: Add an Overclock Option to Avoid Slowdowns

If you overclock the NES it will break certain games. However many games are actually very tolerant of incorrect timing. In one of the NES emulators I programmed I overclocked the system by changing the Clock Ratio between the CPU and PPU. But as previously mentioned you need the APU/Sound component to still run at its normal speed or else the pitc...

So no analog out through the IO board, it will be interesting to see how users react to that. No CRT no party!   I agree. But this is just the very beginning. It's understandable to be a low priority at the start. Lots of people certainly hope it'll be added eventually. I certainly do as I prefer analog RGB via the I/O board.

Re: CRT display issues

If you look on the back of the TV for the model number it's possible to find the schematic. If you're lucky the TV might be possible to modify for RGB input. Many TVs are like that but not all of them. Some are very easy and others more difficult.

Re: MiSTer on my CRT TV *WOES*

This TV is definitely able to handle NTSC. The problem is most likely in your mister.ini file. Assuming you are using default .ini, for Direct Video you should set “direct_video=1” & “composite_sync=1" (not all of these DV dongles are guaranteed to work though). I don't use I/O board so not quite sure, but perhaps just “composite_sync=1&q...

If you pause the video you can see it is a SuperGirl theme CRT Television. Similar to many other themed TVs like Batman, Spongebob, Disney Princess, etc.

It is important to know how it is connected to this TV before anyone can really say how to fix it. It looks like sync is having an issue.

Re: Why I hate emulation.

But I think a lot of the dislike of software emulators comes from general inaccuracy related issues and some widely used bad emulator setups like RetroPie/RetroArch. Back in the 90s and early 2000s I played lots of games on DOS and Win9X emulators and did not experience issues like horrible input lag. Even today playing MAME on a modern PC seems t...

Re: Why I hate emulation.

Software emulators can actually be quite good. But the RetroPie with RetroArch suffers from bad input lag. I have seen a setup inside one of the Arcade1Up cabinets with RetroPie and the input lag made anything besides casual play of something like a beat em up game not something I would want to do on it. But there are software emulators that don't ...

Mame was never accurate, you need a powerful CPU for software accuracy and Mame can run on a toaster powered by a potato You can't generalize MAME though. Each different driver in MAME could be an accurate or not so accurate representation of the game being emulated. And there are certainly tradeoffs. Older and less complex hardware might be emula...

Re: SA-1 patched Roms work fine in MiSTer

I'm not sure how the Turbo function on the MiSTer works exactly but the idea of converting SlowROM games to FastROM isn't new at all. But the gains from doing so are probably going to be pretty small. The SNES CPU takes a different number of master cycles each CPU cycle depending on the memory being accessed. SlowROM accesses take 8 master cycles. ...

To be honest I am completely lost here... I've been running emulators since 20 years and just a short while ago I moved to FPGA only because I've been surrounded by people in my community that moved beyond emulation and started using FPGA and convincing me of its pure way of playing the good old games. Not because it is easy but because the hard w...

Re: New MiSTer Composite adapter - mAVster_MD2

Have you thought about having a cable to go from the VGA port directly to the GPIO port, negating the need for the I/O board? I think it's a neat idea having an easy solution to use the MiSTer with old TVs without RGB support.

Re: Earthbound and copy protection

I don't believe MiSTer has any issues with any SNES games using SRAM based copy protection. It's used in many popular games so we'd probably know if there was an issue. By contrast Mega Man X uses SRAM as well as ROM mirroring/mapping for copy protection, something very few games used.

It should save when you press the MiSTer Menu button. When you have saved in the game just bring up the MiSTer menu and it should write your SRAM to the SD Card.

Re: Mega Man X3 Zero Project 4.1 save issue.

Well I'm glad you're making progress in getting something working. When I said I assume the Cx4 doesn't need to be involved I wasn't aware how much of memory mapping the Cx4 is in charge of. I was thinking if the SRAM area used by the hack is not causing the Cx4 to control the bus then it'd be simple to map SRAM there. But if it does then you'd hav...

Re: Mega Man X3 Zero Project 4.1 save issue.

Are you talking about the Cx4's internal ram? It's been awhile since I've looked at details about the Cx4 but the ROM hack in question is in theory looking to access battery backed SRAM at the "usual" LoROM mapping location for such memory. The Cx4 doesn't need to be and probably shouldn't be involved. If you can find the bits that map yo...

Re: Mega Man X3 Zero Project 4.1 save issue.

There are such bytes, but I don't see any obvious problem in how they're interpreted by MiSTer. However, each special chip cartridge type also has its own logic in SNES_MiSTer to handle mapping, so there could be an incompatibility specific to the combination of CX4 and SRAM. The CX4 code definitely has logic and connections for SRAM, but I'm not ...

Re: Mega Man X3 Zero Project 4.1 save issue.

The Cx4 cartridge doesn't normally have SRAM on board. The MiSTer SNES core probably doesn't attach SRAM (it has no reason to) and so the game is reading some other memory for "save data" which is why you see that. And that's also why the hack attempting to write it has no effect. The weird save file data suggests the hack doesn't have an...

Nearly all commercial releases should have valid information in the internal header. Prototypes and hacks are where it becomes less reliable. No (official) game lies in the header for copy protection. Nintendo wanted that information as part of getting the cartridges produced. It needed to be correct presumably to ensure the correct board configura...

NES is the primary system where battery backed SRAM also gets used for general expansion RAM. SNES already has a very large amount of RAM so the relatively small amount in a cartridge would be unlikely to be used for anything other than data backup. However it's possible a hack could steal some unused portion for this purpose so I wouldn't rule it ...

I don't see why the current method is so hard to deal with. Save your game in the game itself, then press the menu button. Simple. In your suggestion of auto saving every 10 seconds, now when you save the game in the game you need to wait atleast 10 seconds in the worst case scenario for the save data to be backed up. Seems like a worse idea to me....

Mega Man X has very aggressive copy protection where as Demon's Crest is more subtle about it. In DC you reach I think it's the 3rd boss who simply cannot die and you're stuck. I am not certain if the protection includes ROM mirroring/mapping or if it's entirely SRAM based. Mega Man X has both in place. Try using the US version 1.1 ROM. If that doe...

MiSTer's core should have the SRAM sorted out as it would likely cause issues with many other games if this was not correct. Killer Instinct is another game with no SRAM that will show an Anti Piracy screen if you have SRAM detected. But Mega Man X (and Demon's Crest I believe) also require proper ROM mirroring. If either SRAM mapping or ROM mappin...
