Re: Mid 80's DOS 3.1 PCs: 80c88/8088 Core

The AO486 is your closest bet, but it's a lot more powerful than a 80C88. At least it should run your software though.

Re: The Verge Published an Article on MiSTer

Indeed I know next to nothing about the market for FPGA boards but some prices I did see are pretty much prohibitive to a project like MiSTer. Sure some would still buy in at 10x the current price point but not many. Here's to hoping that a similarly priced successor platform will be available at the inevitable point in time when the DE10 Nano ceas...

Re: The Verge Published an Article on MiSTer

I bought a DE10 from some big electronics retailer, no questions asked. Only later did I find out about its intended purpose. Right now I'm taking my first baby steps with Quartus, Verilog and VHDL. Something I would have never done if it weren't for MiSTer. I never pretended to be in academia or industry and misrepresented myself in any other way....

Re: Wishlist of Cores You Would Like to See in the Future

Without any regard for feasibility:
- NextComputer
- Apple Lisa
- Commodore 128
- IBM 5050
- accurate IBM XT/AT/PS2
- DEC Vax
- Misc. ancient big iron like Burroughs, Data General, or Sun/SGI boxes

So nobody here misses a CPU with MMU capabilities? That's at least my main takeaway from this thread so far.

Re: Redbook CD Audio Support?

Heh I lived through DOS because my dad thought it prudent to buy a massively overpriced PC right before I finally saved enough for myself to buy an A500. I did get one years later out of nostalgia. Amiga is still superior in many ways. The crap one takes for granted in Microsoft-land boggles the mind. The 7th guest was one stunning game at the time...

Love the story! The MegaCD implements Red Book.. should be doable if it fits I guess.

Re: Faster CPU for Minimig core?

How is a request for an accurate FPGA-simulated Amiga 3000 craziness? Software emulation did Amiga long before MiSTer was even a thing. By your reasoning the whole project should not have happened because there already was a working alternative. Sure an A3000 may be darned near impossible to do (I don't know) and the value of it may be low in terms...

Re: Faster CPU for Minimig core?

That's quite a bold statement: the only useful hardware config. Being an overclocked 68k adds nothing functionally. A 60030 with MMU and FPU would. WinUAE needs a PC with Windows. That's completely incomparable to the instant-on hassle-free near native feel in a tiny box of the MiSTer. Which model? Simply the most basic initially released version o...

Re: Faster CPU for Minimig core?

I'm not looking for useful UNIX on a MiSTer. I have FreeBSD 13 for amd64 coming for that this month. I'm also not looking for a fast Amiga. What I am looking for, and what FPGA is amazing at, is faithful reproduction of rare, old and fragile computers so that their workings can be experienced and studied without breaking the bank or requiring train...

Re: Faster CPU for Minimig core?

A fully decked-out 68030/40 with FPU, MMU. would open up many doors, not just Amiga related. A lot of early UNIX workstation gear was also based on the bigger 68k's, AMIX may even run, not to mention Apple Macintosh with a bit more oomph than the MacPlus. But beggars can't be choosers so I patiently await what the gurus produce.

Possible? Sure. But don't hold your breath for one. Other options are far easier. Like getting an old player for next to nothing second hand.

Old Sun, SGI, DEC?

Is there any chance at all for implementations of old SGI workstations like the IRIS 1400, Next computer, old Sun workstations.. things like that? Seems mostly m68k based + weird interconnects to me but I may be wrong. Is anyone working on these? Would DEC VAX or even Alpha fit?

Re: FreeBSD not booting

These old versions should run on a bare 386. Slowly, but they should run. The FPU requirement came with the 3.x branch if I'm not mistaken.

Can code break the FPGA?

A question I remember from way back: some malware is able to physically damage hardware. Think of running disk heads across platters really fast all the time, making them bump into a mechanical guard repeatedly and causing damage. Other than this kind of method, software can't really break a computer. But how is this for an FPGA? Could I write some...

HDMI to DVI does not convert, it's pin-compatible. VGA does get converted to digital by the screen, so HDMI will probably be faster for you.

Learning path for FPGA

Hey all. I've been thoroughly loving my MiSTer setup for months now but would like to be able to dabble with it some more. I'm coming more from a home computer conservation angle than a gamer. As such a core that faithfully implements an IBM XT would interest me, even though AO486 is probably already mostly compatible. My feeling is that much of wh...

FreeBSD not booting

From a conservation perspective I'm trying to boot ancient x86 operating systems on the ao486. FreeBSD is one of them, but none of the really old ones from the 1.x and 2.x series work. Where to even begin debugging this?
