Re: Abandoned Cores, Long Outstanding Feature Requests

I can understand wanting to wait for someone to fix the analog sound the right way. The closer you get something to "good enough" the longer it's likely to stay that way as there's less motivation to correct it.

Re: Transfering Commodore 128 Core

There is one think i don't really like and i'm not sure what to do: Now we have C64 and C128 cores where later one is basically absorbed the whole C64. While C64 is iconic computer, C128 is niche one. So giving up C64 core into favour of C128 is wrong by all means. It would be better to have/continue C64 core with extra C128 functionality. Re: NES Composite Output

Mikes' tuning of composite is fantastic and look cleaner than real consoles for many cores. Most definitely not crappy. Wii composite is even cleaner. But they are certainly not accurate. Composite look different even between different models of FC/NES. Even more so on RF. I'd love to see someone go sicko mode and come up with MDFourier style meas...

Re: NES Composite Output

Composite video is just generally crappy and MikeS handles it the best way possible by using a luma trap and careful tuning in the cores to combine Y&C. To handle it the way the NES does natively, you're going to need to rewrite part of the core and need a different analog board that would output at the required levels to be in spec with NTSC a...

Re: Allwinner D1 Possible Future Cheaper FPGA Options

The last time I even saw someone try was two years ago and in that time the price of the DE-10 Nano has gone up 100% and a lot of new FPGA hardware has come into the market. It's worth investigating what's possible.

Hardware has a life cycle too, normally somewhere around 7-10 years and the DE-10 Nano turned 5 last summer.

Re: Allwinner D1 Possible Future Cheaper FPGA Options

I doubt there's any subsidies beyond the education one. If you get prices quoted for the SOC used in the DE-10 nano in 10,000+ quantities in the Asian market it is much, much cheaper than small quantities in the North American market.

Is this really a viable solution ? The D1 is just a cheap RiscV based board too

Why not just fork the cores to the board he's using with the Cyclone, the Linux side is not needed.

The framework is the amazing part of MiSTer.

Re: Special Chip Support

Could the the ST011 and ST018 be implement using the hybrid approach? The ST018 is an arm chip and they probably aren't games that need clock cycle exact timings https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=2397 If you actually read that thread to the end you would see all the bottlenecks in the hybrid approach that cannot be overcome with the DE-10 Nano.

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

Well we had a similar situation with the PSX core, it was in work for years, Robert jumped in and basically produced a well working core within a year.. the other one, was it ever finished? Fine if a well working Jag core comes out before he is done, but he is definitely the man who can push out such a core in record time! Euh? No we didn't. Some ...

Toni Willem himself has said several times that a cycle-exact/cycle-accurate 68020 can´t be done with nowadays information available.

Cycle exact is rarely needed, very few of the CPU implementations used in MiSTer have that level of accuracy. We could definitely achieve something far closer than what we have now.

Re: OpenLara on MiSTer

The ARM CPU inside the DE-10 Nano's SOC lacks any sort of video, everything is output through the FPGA with a simple framebuffer using the shared DDR3 memory. This is going to be significantly slower than the fast SVGA cards or the early 3D cards that were used with the DOS version of Tomb Raider.

Re: MDA Upgrade to Hercules

Probably almost nothing. DOSBox completely ignores F11 and F12 keypresses and does not pass them to applications. DOSBox is explicitly for games only. I can't speak for spark2k06, but I was assuming that the XT core is supposed to be usable for more than that. I'm pretty sure WordPerfect, for instance, uses F11. On the max speed version of the cor...

It would make DOS faster , but not better . I mean, you could do it, but it seems like you're just making a very fast 8086. It might be easier to redesign the existing core to clock faster instead. Not sure that is enough; from benchmarks results it looks like a lower clocked 286 can beat a very fast 8086. I'd suspect it has to do with bigger widt...

Yes, something like ABL should be disabled with a service remote control. "should be disabled" is not something I would ever give as advice. It will violate your warranty and it will increase the likelihood of burn-in occurring. ABL is actually there to protect the power supply since it's undersized on these sets and is unable to handle ...

It should be borne in mind, though, that if the license is invalid that doesn't mean anyone can just do what they like with the code - quite the opposite. By default you have no rights to use it, and the license is there to grant you particular rights. If you consider the license inapplicable then you're back to the default position of having no r...

The code that is incorporated into every MiSTer core cannot be GPL'd because it's not software and the GPL is a software license. The code that can be GPL'd is on the Linux side.

You can use incompatible software licenses together as long as you have the author's permission. It just creates a situation where you have a license violation but the author promises to never act and do anything about it. It's something that has been done for decades now. This situation seems to make some people irrationally nervous though. The is...
