Re: A case for 5x vertical crop in 1080p mode.
Yeah, I'm in the camp that a 5× with vertical crop mode would be more trouble than it's worth, at least at this stage. The MiSTer can always be connected to an OSSC in the meantime. I have had my mister connected to my ossc, and had much worse issues with having to fiddle with the ossc sampling options for mister than with original hardware (conso...

Re: "Zoomed" Display
I don't think we have any sort of custom cropping as a core mister feature at this time. Some cores have specific cropping for known common sizes, though, such as Neo Geo. If I understand the OSSC documentation correctly, I think your display has to "play along" with the OSSC to be able to resize the screen. Otherwise, I think you are at ...

Re: Cable differences and problems with ocational screen rolling over YPbPr
Growing up, one of my neighbors had a SNES hooked up to a monitor (via composite) that may have been a Commodore 1901 or similar unit (going by internet pictures / my memory). It would reliably roll picture on (I think) Butter Bridge 2, in SMW, one of the brightest levels in the game. May have been similar behavior?

I don't think the updater updates mister.ini after the initial install. I usually grab the latest mister.ini and use a diffing tool to merge in any updates.

Re: PC VGA CRT MiSTer with I/O Board Scaling Issues
Caveat: My mister is a bit out of date and does not have the forced vga scaler change on most/all cores. I hooked up VGA on an LCD to see what video mode was being reported with vanilla mister.ini and forced_scandoubler=1. With that setting, the main mister menu, and all the console cores I tried, used 640x480@60. Computer cores were more varied, s...

Re: Minimal option for refining a vanilla DOS 6.22 install?
Could I have two primary partition drives, for example. It should work. I vaguely remember having two IDE drives at one point, both with primary partitions (and both set as active), and, I think, depending on which one I had hooked up to IDE-0 was the drive that the computer used as the boot device. Pretty sure this was in the days before you coul...

Re: Minimal option for refining a vanilla DOS 6.22 install?
I think extended partitions were only needed when the physical drive was larger than the max partition size.
To that end, I think using VHDs that fit into single partitions, and using primary partitions on all the drives would be simplest.

Re: Minimal option for refining a vanilla DOS 6.22 install?
Some light reading on partitions: https://www.rigacci.org/docs/biblio/online/firmware/fdisk.htm https://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/partitions/partition_types-1.html IIRC , DOS 3.3 could only have up to 32mb partitions (FAT16). For example, if you had a 80mb hdd, you could have a 32mb primary partition (C:), but then an extended partition for the rest of t...

Re: PC VGA CRT MiSTer with I/O Board Scaling Issues
video_mode=1600,64,192,304,1200,1,3,46,162000 That matches the tinyvga.com listing. It might help to see the rest of your mister.ini. Still, not super good looking. Certainly not the poor-man's PVM that I have heard tales told about. I am sure it is my error and general in experience. Any advice is appreciated. When running at 31khz, I think you h...

Re: PC VGA CRT MiSTer with I/O Board Scaling Issues
I would be a bit surprised if the position was (scaler) video mode specific. For example, some (all?) of Jotego's cores have h-pos/v-pos adjustments for analog video output. That leads me to think any position adjustments for analog video might have to be in the core itself.

Timing info from cm751__superscan_751__19_crt_display.pdf, p.8. Video modes in mister use pixels/lines instead of us, however. Microprocessor-based preset functions can store 26 sets of geometry settings including the standard settings. The following industrial standard settings have been preprogrammed by the factory. Is this anything like some game gear devs leveraging its blurry screen? For example, the shield power up in sonic 1.

Re: CPS 1.5
Tried out the core a few hours ago and played through level one of c&d, wof, and punisher. Had to retry a few times to get punisher to load, but that could have been the usual occasional weirdness of changing out cores. Noticed a bit of gfx glitches (sprite / background priority?), but nothing major.

Re: Second Reality Demo
My guess is that it would require tighter VGA timings before we could get Second Reality displayed at 60hz without any audio/video desync. I found a writeup of the code from 2013 here: https://fabiensanglard.net/second_reality/index.php The author mentions a bit about the demo using a simulated (Amiga) Copper in § Copper: https://fabiensanglard.net...

On a open source "game recreation" project I used to be involved with, Youtube videos were sometimes sourced for reference (source of truth). A quick search on Youtube, for xevious arcade and for galaga arcade, shows some videos of people playing on arcade cabs (possibly original h/w). Re: Recommended scaler settings to rotate vertical-only games? (re: 15 kHz arcade monitor)
If I understand correctly, you can use the video filters with vga scaler. An appropriate filter could possible improve the clarity of a downscaled image. So far, with fixed geometry screens anyway, I have gone with one of the gaussian sharp filters when I could not get integer scale to enable scanlines.
