What are the benefits?

Benefits of the fast CPU core? A small ammount of games run significantly better, than with the normal core. Driver3 for example goes up to framerates that you don't get with the normal core even when you activate all CPU enhancements.

Re: Well Nobody Saw This Coming! Nintendo 64 Core Announced

The Patreon post is rather detailed and from what he writes there he is pretty optimistic that it will work. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the size of the FPGA and the speed of the CPU seems to be doable as well.

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

I think the idea of someone dedicating their limited time into making cores for useless systems like the Jaguar, 3do, Cdi and such is quite sad because the end result will not amount to anything good. A few of us nerds may give it a few minutes of attention for a laugh but that’s it. I think the developers time is better spent on something useful ...

Re: Amiga Vision (Formally MegaAGS?)

From my experience using RGB on an Amiga meant most of the time using a dedicated Monitor. Yes, concerning early computers and video games you are absolutely right. They were all RF. I think the first console I remember with an officially available scart cable was the SNES, but I might confuse that... The Master System had a DIN connector called A...

Re: Amiga Vision (Formally MegaAGS?)

TVs were meant to be used with RF not RGB or Composite (at least here in Europe). Well, I made a apprenticeship back then, and in my memories, in the late eighties and the nineties, RGB over Scart and Composite over scart was already there for many TVs, video recorders and cameras, at least here in europe. RF was early eighties and before. Yeah in...

Re: Amiga Vision (Formally MegaAGS?)

Amiga 50hz timings seem pretty wacky in terms of producing an image way off-center compared to PAL consoles but I gather that is true to original hardware. You adjust your CRT to match the Amiga experience, but it probably won't look great for most other cores. You can use the scaler to push a 240/270p? resolution to your CRT and control the cente...

Re: Gradius II Japan Not Booting? [Solved]

Thanks. I just tried it with Gradius II. I redownloaded the ROM from the "htgdb-gamepacks" Everdrive/MiSTer pack on archive.org, just to be safe, and used that with the patcher. Although it did change the header, the behavior with the patched ROM is still the same. Sometimes I can get past the title screen, but it crashes before I can ge...

Re: Chrono Quest Monitor Resyncs Changing Screen

The Amiga uses a lot of different resolutions and some games switched between different screen modes and resolutions quite often. On a RGB-CRT this switch in resolutions happened almost on the fly. With modern TFT-Displays these resyncs take some time. The MiSTer showing the new resolution is the intended behavior.

Re: Atari 800XL How to Run .XEX Files?

.XEX files are "executables" -- something you run from within DOS. The only way I know how to start an XEX is to boot something like SpartaDOS X, mount your disk, change to the mounted disk (if necessary), then type "X <FILENAME.XEX>" to run. The core supports loading XEX files without the need of running any DOS. You can just ...

Re: Will names.txt Ever Be Fixed?

There is no “official one” as far as I know. It’s a feature that you can make use of — if you don’t want it, just delete it or make your own with the preferred name mappings you want. It exists to decouple the core names from what you want displayed in the menus, and you don’t have to use it. The default setup does not use names.txt (…unless somet...

Re: Any Way to Limit 68020 Speed?

Counting the Atari as earlier than the Amiga is true in a literal sense, but you have to realize that Tramiel was involved in early Amiga development, lent the team a lot of money, and thought they would fail and he would end up owning the tech. Then Commodore came in, bailed out the debt, and took over the hardware. At that point, Tramiel put the...

Re: Any Way to Limit 68020 Speed?

Bolded above: no, it wasn't really. The c64 was only released in 1982 and they were just hitting their stride in the mid 80s. The mid 80s was the era of the 8 bit machines, yes the 68k existed in the very late 70s but it was by no means a mainstream affordable desktop CPU until the Amiga, ST and to a latter degree, the original Mac (which was much...

So this tripped me up as well. I do remember having to hold down the OPTION key back when I owned this computer, but just having to hit a "random" (F10) key on the keyboard once in order to reboot and have it load, I don't get at all. Why doesn't the OSD for this core have an option to reboot and load so you don' t have to go to a forum ...

Re: Any Way to Limit 68020 Speed?

My comment was only in regards to your remark that the use of the 68000 put the Amiga five generationshead of the competition. No, it was the multitasking OS that put it five generations ahead. Here I completely agree, multitasking on the Lisa was much more limited for sure and even if Unix had multitasking, a GUI with windows definitely was a gam...

Re: Any Way to Limit 68020 Speed?

Chris23235: the reason the Amiga's CPU was slower than the STs or Mac's was because it was using a multiple of the NTSC timing crystal, as the system was strongly intended for use with the old standard def video signals. The actual performance of the computer was way higher than you might think from the slow clock rate, because so many tasks could...

Re: Any Way to Limit 68020 Speed?

Yeah, it was definitely ten years ahead of everyone else, and that was ten years when things were moving incredibly fast. CPUs doubled in power every 18 months to 2 years, which in a sense put it five generations in the lead. To be fair when the Amiga was released the 68000 mas already 6 years old and the 7MHz was a rather slow clock speed. The 68...

I noticed when playing Rainbow Islands that the music slows down when the screen gets busy. Is that normal for a 128k Spectrum? And if not, how do I adjust the settings so it's right?
