Re: Emulation available for Roland MT-32 or other more advanced sound cards?
I would like to have this setup running with my crossover cable connecting my MiSTer directly to my PC, but when I tried it, I couldn’t get my MiSTer to recognize the connection. By convention, if a network device is connected and doesn't have contact with a DHCP server (which is what hands out IP addresses), the devices assign themselves an IP ad...

Re: Emulation available for Roland MT-32 or other more advanced sound cards?
One last thing to note, I did notice while using the MT-32 ROM with MUNT, there were a few hanging or skipped notes on occasion. It wasn't nearly as bad as when I tried using the MiSTer's built-in MUNT, but it was still noticeable enough. Is this something you have experienced, and if so, do you know if there's a way to minimize hanging and/or ski...

Re: request: squashfs in the linux kernel
Great work! Your update and mount scripts are finicky and didn't want to play nice with my system. I compressed all the data on my main Linux machine and transferred it onto my SD card. I managed to get everything working by reading your scripts and doing all the heavy lifting myself over an ssh terminal. I've easily freed up 20gb of space on my 1...

Thanks for getting that script together jayp76! I'll try it out a little later. I do love me some Cave Story, so this could be a fun way to revisit it.

I got it working!! I just had to find the setting that lets you "listen" to the microphone input. Thanks to everyone who helped me out. Fantastic! Congratulations! I'm really glad you got it working. :D I see earlier you were talking about ROMs -- you can also use the CM-32L ROMs with Munt. They have more sounds than an MT-32, but only i...

Re: Emulation available for Roland MT-32 or other more advanced sound cards?
In my setup, I have an HDMI to VGA adapter that has audio out, so I connect that audio into the Line In on my computer. Hmm... Maybe the path for the nano command wasn't quite right. I did check it, but who knows! Anyway, glad you got it sorted with the SD card. Your MiSTer is plugged in to your network, right? And your Windows IP is pretty similar...

Re: Emulation available for Roland MT-32 or other more advanced sound cards?
Oh and don't forget that you'll need to run audio from your MiSTer into your PC's line in just in case any games use both MIDI and OPL2/3 effects.
For what it's worth, I set up this configuration on a Dell Venue 8 Windows tablet -- it's got some old quad core Atom Z3xxx and 2 GB of RAM and it ran great while plugged in.

Re: Emulation available for Roland MT-32 or other more advanced sound cards?
So, after playing Under a Killing Moon for a while with the SC-55 soundfont on the built-in Fluidsynth, it sounds way better than the Sound Blaster soundtrack, and it’s consistent, with no hanging notes. By the way, speaking of MUNT, I know the Raspberry Pi is a popular way to connect MUNT to the MiSTer via remote, but is there a way to do that by...

Re: Linux Games
I like the idea of there being a "Linux Games" menu at the top of MiSTer. I like that bbond007 set up PrBoom-Plus to work with MiSTer, for instance. I'm also always down for a game of bzflag, assuming it can run. Saves me from building a Linux computer. :D Right now, to launch PrBoom-Plus, you have to navigate to the list of Scripts and h...

Re: Emulation available for Roland MT-32 or other more advanced sound cards?
Actually, Roland MT-32 / CM-32L support is now built in to MiSTer thanks to Midilink . The Munt emulator runs on the Arm processor on the DE-10. You will need to supply your own copies of MT32_CONTROL.ROM and MT32_PCM.ROM by putting them into the /media/fat/linux/mt32-rom-data/ directory. After firing up ao486, open Menu (Win+F12), and change UART ...

Re: Useful Tools in MS-DOS
My favorite DOS utility has long been MaxDir . Add it to your path (or in the old days I'd just put it in my DOS folder, haha) and start using "di" instead of "dir". It will show you all of your files in columns and with colors helping you to find what you need immediately. I prefer to have it always show all files in Uppercase ...

Re: VGA Output, Scalers, and CRTs
Yeah, I have been hoping to do this as well... with the scaler it seems a bit pointless to use a CRT monitor I think. I did get VGA working with the variable refresh rate, but anything using SVGA would not work at all. But that was Cache 24 or something last time I tried using a CRT. Yeah - I love using my MiSTer with CRTs. The lack of shimmering ...

This is a really fantastic thread and guide for people new to DOS or who need a refresher. Thanks for putting it together rhester72! Another "Ease of Use" utility is MaxDir: https://www.c-shore.com/maxdir/ , a fantastic continuation of HotDir. Still a lot more helpful if its something that is explained in the menu, rather than on some forums. Especially on page 10 of a 22 page thread! 🤣 It could be as simple as, in the Win...

Re: Networking Under MS-DOS
Do you have the 'SET MTCPSLIP=true' line at the top of your mtcp config? and are you using the 'ping' command from the mtcp package? I've tried setting that in the mtcp config and then I tried setting it in the Autoexec as well, but neither worked. Yes, I'm using the ping command from the mtcp package. I'm going to try setting up a fresh VM with n...

Here's how to get the mTCP TCP/IP applications up and running under DOS with the ao486 core: ...snip for length... This is a really great tutorial, but I'm running into a problem: I can't ping anything. After I run epppd com1 115200 local , it says Installed packet driver handler at vector 0x60. But if I try to ping even 192.168.1.1, it times out....

I used to run a SearchLight BBS many years ago and found it pretty friendly, but that was in the days of dial-up (SearchLight 4.5b). I believe SearchLight 5.x had telnet support, but was also considered a little buggy. It's probably not the greatest choice, but it's the one that would be most nostalgic for me. :D Plus it supports RipTerm, the vecto...

The core itself seems to run fine for me... I don't think sound works though, unfortunately. Are you running sound through hdmi or the audio jack on the I/o board? I set up my Mac Plus core over the last few days using the instructions on the core's repo page. There was a lot of trial and error, but here are some hints that will maybe help someone else: 1. The disk image that they link to in the repo is for 6.0.5. If you just follow the default install instructions, you will also need a Disk 2 and Disk 3 (&qu...
