Re: N64 Core Possibility? (Update! Robert Is Working On This Core!)

Going by the 90-9-1 rule, there's 5000 members of this board and 7000 people on the discord so that would imply there's about 50-70k people in the entire MiSTer community. My guess is this is optimistic, since I wager the typical MiSTer user is more likely to register and interact online than a member of another community. The most popular release ...

Re: Games Consoles Not On MiSTer And Their Viability (A Discussion)

I would rather see a CD-i core before a 3DO core. CD-i is a bastard thing with no worthwhile games (barring the few infamous ones) but it has a huge library of bizarre corporate media and obscure educational software that is worth preserving.

Re: More Power with Two DE10 Nano Boards?

An ITX computer can be pretty small, but I understand the objection. A MiSTer successor could just as easily be a custom SBC with a high end ARM chipset for graphical power and an FPGA for retro fidelity. But that would probably be quite a bit more expensive than a board meant to slot into an existing PC.

Re: More Power with Two DE10 Nano Boards?

The DE10-nano has the FPGA and the HPS connected over a PCIe bus, which as far as I know is internal to the Cyclone V chip and not exposed to users. If there was a way to access that bus, then presumably it would be possible to add additional hardware. The thing is, at this point when we're talking about chaining together multiple DE10-nano boards ...

Printer support would also come in handy for a Casio Loopy core.

Also I'd be lying if I said I haven't daydreamed about getting not only Game Boy Printer support on MiSTer, but also support to translate USB Video into video input to the Game Boy Camera.

Re: MT32-Pi Why?

I have a MT32-pi hooked up to my MiSTer for a few reasons:

- Playing Midis in Windows 95 is very nostalgic for me, and having high-quality midi synth for PC games that support it is a huge benefit to me.
- I don't use the user port for SNAC or anything else.
- I already had a RPi3 sitting around doing nothing.

Re: Sega Saturn Core in Development

I mean if you want to do the work and make sure you coordinate with Kuba who is building and sharing the cores on Discord I don't see any reason why not. It's probably more work than is necessary since the Saturn isn't going to get the rapid update cadence that the PSX got, but on the other hand I don't like the way communities hide their knowledge...

Re: How long does it take for your MiSTer to be operational?

I have a USB drive in it that can take a few seconds to be ready and it usually takes 15-20 seconds for networking to connect, but from power on to menu is only a couple seconds. It's fast enough that when I want to change games I just hit the reset button, the same as I would have on an old console.

Re: Advanced cores for MiSTer future FPGA hardware

It's certainly possible that future FPGAs may be fast enough to match the processors of these newer old systems, but it's also true that speed has never been a goal for FPGA architecture. They've always been meant to be customizable ASICs that can perform one job at exactly the speed required, which is rarely more than a few hundred megahertz. Beca...

Re: Games Consoles Not On MiSTer And Their Viability (A Discussion)

I'd add the Sega Pico to this list, which is really just a modified Genesis/Mega Drive that takes storybook-shaped cartridges and includes a pen tablet. Work has been done for this core but it was never released because the MiSTer can't easily support the storybook aspect of the system, even though the only way the storybook interacts with the syst...

Re: Advanced cores for MiSTer future FPGA hardware

I agree that FPGA isn't a good solution for consoles 6th gen and beyond. At that point, hardware and software gets sophisticated enough that the benefits of FPGA are outweighed by the limitations, as Sorg stated above. It's rarely cycle accuracy that's the goal for software emulation of these systems, rather removing inaccuracies in the emulator or...

Re: N64 Core Possibility? (Update! Robert Is Working On This Core!)

Yeah it's nonsense to say the N64 isn't worth preserving. Some of the best examples of early 3D games are on the 64 and they deserve to be remembered and enjoyed by future generations. This is a Nintendo home console we're talking about, not the Tiger R-Zone.

Re: N64 Core Possibility? (Update! Robert Is Working On This Core!)

I can see both sides of this. I also lived through the 90s and I saw everyone lose their minds over 3D graphics to the point where people were convinced games with pre-rendered 3D like Donkey Kong Country or psuedo-3d isometric views like Sonic 3D Blast were inherently better than 2D games. There's a lot of 3D games that came out of the mid to late...

Check the game you're trying to run against this spreadsheet to see if it's a game that has known issues. For that matter, a lot of games that will run take longer than usual to load, or require you to quickly button past FMV, or require multiple resets before they come up.

This reminds me of ideas like "What if we port Sonic Mania to the Saturn/Dreamcast?" or "What if we port Shovel Knight to the NES?" While these are games that evoke the visuals of classic consoles they're built with modern tools for modern hardware, and the amount of effort it would take to get them to run on old hardware would ...

Krikzz said he was contacted by Sergey on April 11, and that he's OK but cut off from internet and phone. Re: Simulating CRT scanlines for Guncon?

Unless you are saying that triggering the lightgun, it will be waiting for the detection of the CRT beam to be whereever the gun is pointing... Cannot render each individual pixel within 60 fps of course. I guess it could be made into blocks of pixels instead if that is the case, but then it would probably be something you could see happen with th...

Re: Simulating CRT scanlines for Guncon?

The lightgun method used by guncons works by sampling far, far faster than 60fps. It uses a fast photodiode to detect the CRT beam as it scans across the screen, and references that beam location with the video output of the console to determine what pixel the gun was aimed at. Note that this isn't the same as the NES zapper method, which blanked t...

The 50% overclock seems pretty stable, and seems well within the realm of safe overclocking for ARM processors. What remains to be seen is how this affects the life of the chip long-term and if that's worth whatever benefits we can get from the increased speed.

Re: Support for Linux-side Interfaces [Feature Request]

In Sorg's defense, he's not keeping it as hard to use as possible, he's just completely uninterested in making any significant changes to the current OSD interface. MGL seems like an fine compromise, it gives developers a way to make a Linux script or GUI that can launch cores and roms without affecting the OSD interface.

I had a similar problem with my IO board, the SNAC port was missing the pins connecting it to the DE-10 nano. This seems to be a very common problem with boards bought from unknown sellers; I bought a MiSTer daughterboard kit from Amazon and have had problems with nearly every piece.

Re: Filters, Shadowmask and LCDs

This makes me wonder if the way we think CRTs work, especially in relations to "scanlines", is even close to being right. What I observed looked more like a LCD grid, where black lines exist both horizontally AND vertically. While the beam is skipping every other vertical line, it appears to make no difference in the resulting image, as ...
