Converting MRA patches to IPS?
Is there a simple method of applying the patch data from an MRA file to MAME ROM files outside of MiSTer? Maybe by converting the MRA file to an IPS file? I'd like to setup Street Fighter Alpha 3: Challenger's Edition on my MAME cabinet, and I'd rather avoid busting out a hex editor and making the edits manually, if possible. UPDATE (2022-07-02): G...

Re: Building a new MiSTer would like to know what's a good monitor and audio device
No, it's not irrelevant. While MiSTer doesn't support variable refresh rate (VRR), VRR monitors are likely to accommodate the arbitrary refresh rates native to the systems MiSTer emulates.

Re: NES Composite Output
- Woudn't it be cool, in terms of preservation, to have a native composite out of Mister? Do you think it might be feasible ? Honestly, I think an external RGB-to-composite adaptor is likely to be as good as it gets. I can't imagine there'd be enough demand to make an I/O board with composite output, and I imagine it would essentially be the same ...

Re: NES core colour changes in v201102
The part about direct video to component not being compatible with all TVs has me a bit worried, so if option 1 is at all possible I would start with that. As far as I can tell, getting YPbPr working directly from Direct Video is hit-and-miss. I'd recommend using a separate converter to go from RGBHV/RGBs to YPbPr. I personally use an RGBs (SCART)...

Re: Two arcade joysticks on one control panel
Should be possible to adjust the core such that player 1 controls movement and player 2 controls shooting. Far as I can tell a "player" just lines up a gamepad with an input slot on the core, its not inherently linked to credits or start button or anything. Yeah, that's what I meant by adding "phantom players". It would certain...

Re: Two arcade joysticks on one control panel
For the most part, you'd be better off having two independent joysticks. As you already know, that won't work with games like Robotron: 2048 , as you're limited to mapping one controller per player. I'm guessing that's a limitation of the MiSTer framework and not the cores themselves. Maybe the core developers could integrate phantom players into t...

Re: SNES PAL Speed Full Screen
Not with a CRT TV (not without mangling the picture, anyway). If you were outputting to a CRT PC monitor and using the scaler, you could get it to work. But if you play only the games exclusive to PAL, those should be properly optimized anyway.

i would recommend putting a brooks universal fight board in that. but if the price is too demanding for that, get one of these https://github.com/MickGyver/DaemonBite-Arcade-Encoder (noting, the daemonbite encoder can only be used with a PC/MiSTer) ----- as for the spinner wiring/setup. this might be of help - https://www.reddit.com/r/fpgagaming/c...

Re: More Donkey Kong Country (1 and 2) save issues
I just tried renaming my ROM back to the No-Intro naming scheme, generating a new save, saving, and reloading. It all worked fine.
I really don't know what the problem could be at your end. I assume you're saving to an SD card (I'm saving to an SMB share), so could it be something funky with your SD card or its filesystem?

Hmm...I just tested Donkey Kong Country 2, and it's saving and loading just fine for me. My save file is 2 KiB in size.
Have you tried removing the save files you have and letting MiSTer regenerate them? They may be corrupt in some way.

Re: More Donkey Kong Country (1 and 2) save issues
I'm not able to save my progress in either of these two titles, while all the other SNES titles seem to save just fine. I do have autosave on and I am bringing up the menu to trigger the actual save, just as I'm doing in every other title. One difference I've noticed between the .sav files in the saves/SNES folder is that every other title consume...

Are you using TOSLINK (optical audio)? That's a typical side effect of the signal dropping in and out, and it's not specific to MiSTer.

Using a matrix keypad for second generation consoles
Has anybody ever considered integrating one of these 3×4 matrix keypads into an arcade stick for console such as the ColecoVision, Intellivision, or Atari 5200? I'm considering hacking one together with a keyboard encoder , but surely there are more elegant solutions. Having the MiSTer recognize it as a controller rather than a keyboard would be pr...

There's no sense in favouring VGA over DVI with an LCD monitor. LCDs are natively digital, so stick to a digital input wherever possible.

Just as the author of that blog post, I find it baffling that overscan is still enabled by default on modern TVs. TV manufacturers must assume DVD players are more likely to plugged into the HDMI ports than PCs and modern gaming consoles.

Re: Front end swap?
I'm fine with the OSD as it is, but how practical would it be to allow MiSTer to accept control commands from an app or web browser on another device, as something like Kodi or Plex allows? Users could then run their flashy frontends on their PCs or phones.

It'll most certainly output 480i/576i and will probably introduce lag. Devices like that aren't intended for video games.

No, it's mainly the running and jumping effects I was describing. You can download the old MAME samples here if you're curious. I assume there are various timing issues in the core at the moment are cause for other wonkiness. The core is still relying on audio samples, as did MAME prior to 2007. Open the .mra files and you'll see them encoded in there.
Till somebody figures out a way to simulate the analogue audio hardware like modern versions of MAME do, we're stuck with those inaccurate sound effects.

Re: Donkey Kong Country save issue
All you need to do (provided you have "autosave" enabled) is open the OSD with whatever button is mapped to do that (I don't have an IO board, so it's a gamepad button for me). As soon as the OSD is opened, it writes the game's save to storage. Rebooting has no effect on the save; it's just part of my own ritual. I don't have a physical r...
