Re: Video Player Core?

You can in theory write a core that implements video codecs, but it is going to be limited in terms of how many it can do since a lot of those are proprietary and sold as non-open IP cores. Even if you started from scratch it would be lots of work per codec. So you would end up with a player core that forces you to reencode your videos to work, wit...

Re: How to debug in the ao486 core?

Unfortunately that seems to be a bit more complicated on the AO486. I don't even know what a good approach looks like. Is there a way to do remote debugging, so I'm not bound to the location of the MiSTer ? Think of ao486 as real hardware; how would you debug in that case? You'd need debugging tools that can run directly in the core, and for remot...

Heecules is a better fit for the upcoming 186 core. It already has a proper CGA implementation, at least:

Here is a test build by alanswx that I've been testing recently, adding a second floppy drive and the ability to save disks in .nib format to the SD card! I was able to play Adventure Construction Set and Ultima II with it so far. It needs disks to be in .nib to write back to them. This is an acceptable trade-off since this is not a copy-protected ...

Widescreen hack feature is amazing

This feature blew my mind. It doesn't work for all games (and that's fine), but when it works - wow!

Has anybody found some games where it works particularly well?
For me, it worked great for Tekken 3, okay for Soul Calibur (minor glitches) but was too glitchy for GT2.

To be fair, per-game config is a very different case than using pre-canned templates that are only loaded :)

It appears like analog board could have more features like SNAC port 2 but there's not enough IO pins. However I also question the design choices- analog and digital boards have SD slot no.2. Re: Microcomputer Cores Feature Wishlist

I agree in general, but maybe not exactly just templates. I think the answer would be permanent per-game configs. 'Why not both? Load a template then apply minor tweaks, then it can be saved to match the filename of the last disk you loaded. Ideally we xould see the current mapping in the OSD, although there isnt much room for anything too advanced.

Re: Microcomputer Cores Feature Wishlist

I would love to have the ability to load templates for Joy -> Key mapping on computer cores. Today, we have to re-enter all mappings manually each time, and we must reload the core to clear them. It's alright but it can get a bit annoying when switching games. There were quite a few standard layouts that were used pretty widely on the Apple II and ...

Re: A Real PC XT Core Perhaps?

The ao486 core has the FPGA space almost full, and is tricky to compile so annoying to work on. But I wonder, maybe these features could be added as compile-time toggles? In other words, use the same codebase to produce both the regular ao486 core and a "ao186" core that only contains the alternate features (lower CPU speeds baked in, CGA...

Re: A Real PC XT Core Perhaps?

Not sure if you have the LEs on the FPGA for it, but perhaps you could add GameBlaster (C/MS) support using Sorgelig's implementation of the SA1099 soundchip: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ao486_MiSTer/blob/master/rtl/soc/sound/saa1099.sv It was a niche card but it would fit well with the specialized theme of this core (with e.g. Tandy support) H...

I think one has little to do with the other. Seems like this guy Darren is the common link. He was working at IronStone Partners which got the C64 rights and licenses from Tulip to develop the DTV. Perhaps he was the marketer / "idea person" behind the DTV, whereas Jeri Ellsworth was part of the hardware development team. Apparently he w...

Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

The C64 DTV was a good example of the pitfalls of trying to make an ASIC clone ( https://www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/C64DTV ). When it came out, I figured it would be reused widely, like the NES SoC that powers so many cheap retro game products. It has sold well (600K+ units according to the above) yet there aren't any more commercial products based on i...

Definitely has a niche for early games that run on composite colors, if it could simulate the artifacting as is done with the Apple II core.
