Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

My vote is on a Saturn core :P Only because someone else is working on something has never stopped Robert. He has his own ideas he wants to achieve and that also includes going beyond what the hardware could do like what he did with the PSX core. Robert didn't begin working on a PSX core until laxer announced that he wasn't working on it any longe...

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

The whole secrecy thing is annoying. He said it’s in case the core isn’t doable but he announced PSX knowing it may not be doable. Makes no sense. One day, when you learn the personal pressures of having thousands of people waiting to overreact to something you work on, you will then know why he's being secretive about it. He's managing expectatio...

Re: Would Cloud FPGA Gaming be feasible down the road?

The only advantage would be shaving about 1 frame off in the whole signal chain that is already overwhelmed by latency. When you do cloud gaming there is a balancing act between the quality of the video stream and the latency. Better latency usually means worse video quality, and vice versa. You can get both, but the bandwidth goes up a ton. Then t...

darfpga developed the core, not me and he would likely be the one to do it. I don't think he has a patreon.

That core isn't locked behind the patreon paywall, so this message being received means either you have an older beta version of the core on your system or something went wrong with an update.

No, I didn't just say if you aren't happy do it yourself. I also said it's really hard to do this stuff since the obvious implication of your post was that certain things (like NGPC) are taking too long and you don't appreciate the cores he's releasing anymore because they are games you don't like. Re: JT Friday Feb 17, 2023

What is the thinking behind him putting all his cores in the one github repo? I thought the general thought for larger projects is you don't do that. Going to make checking and logging issues messy. Actually the way he organizes his repos is more initial setup but it's less management in the long run as long as you keep all the integrations workin...

The checker pattern coming up probably means that the file is either corrupted or invalid in some way. Can you try and rule out which file it is and then attach it here (filename intact and everything) please?

Re: Vectorization

Possible? Lots of stuff is possible. The technical limitation is, as Bas rightly pointed out, the potential for causing issues with achieving timing closure. It would likely require a fork of the core with a bunch of stuff ripped out and a bunch of features of the MiSTer framework disabled or taken out. It's not as much the logic space, it's the co...

Re: MiSTer Video Test Pattern Like 240p Test Suite?

For 24-bit tests over analog video testing you could load of Castlevania Symphony of the Night on the PSX core (please note, the analog io board is 18-bit video only, direct video is 24-bit however). Just keep the 24-bit dithering turned off in the OSD. For HDMI, same thing, it actually uses 24-bit. If you need a raw gradient testing, then you woul...

Yes, something like ABL should be disabled with a service remote control.

"should be disabled" is not something I would ever give as advice. It will violate your warranty and it will increase the likelihood of burn-in occurring.

Re: New HDR Settings

How good it will look will be somewhat subjective, it will depend on your TV, it will depend on how long you mess with the other options associated with it to get the gain and offset for each color dialed in right, and even then it won't be a correct color matching. The fact is, using scanlines and shadowmasks already mangles the color somewhat, so...

Your Main MiSTer binary needs to be updated too, so make sure you run the downloader script first. If you added it to the end of your MiSTer.ini, make sure it's not underneath another "[core]" bracket exception.

Why can't we have scanlines at 2x scale? I tried shadowmask instead (2x rotated Sony PVM), which works but doesn't seem to be integer aligned so doesn't look quite right. I'm trying on some 480i PSX games (Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Turbo). I think because 480p resolution scanlines are intended to be used with the scandoubler and the PSX core doesn't u...

Re: All ROM Sets Are in 7zip Format, Why?

The implementation cost could be painful, but the ongoing maintenance burden, after the initial bugs were squashed, probably wouldn't be significant. It's not like the archive format changes, so once the code works, it should keep working without much, if any, attention. But it's still a 'nice to have' feature, and I'm sure Sorgelig has many more ...

Re: All ROM Sets Are in 7zip Format, Why?

7zip support would be nice to the users to some degree, but it would add some cpu overhead since 7zip compression requires more cpu time to decompress. In general sorgelig doesn't want to add support to it because he doesn't see it as necessary. It could also introduce more code maintenance issues long term for him when he's the primary maintainer ...

Re: All ROM Sets Are in 7zip Format, Why?

Correct, not all sets are in 7zip, but many on the archive are because 7zip compression is better, so it reduces the upload time. It's best to just unzip the .7z roms, and then if you want to rezip them again for compression you can zip all of them into one zip file, no need to do them individually. The exception being, don't zip up cd images, they...

The technical reason is because otherwise some cores would write to the microSD multiple times a second (which will ruin your MicroSD card quickly) because of the method to detect that a new save can be saved.
