Re: What is the purpose of MiSTer?
I've come to conclude that it is a secret government project designed to have the MiSTer community think that they are building cores to entertain themselves. The actual purpose is to have vintage computers recreated in FPGA to ensure that the government(s) can access the multitude of files that they have stored in the national archives. It turns o...

That would be cool. I forgot that SR is a Capcom title. I’d love to see that one as I spent many a quarter on it back in the day.

These are two that would be a lot of fun on MiSTer.

BTW, I would love to see Donkey Kong high score support if you ever find the time.jimmystones wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 6:51 am Highscore and pause support is in for Time Pilot - pause is a bit ugly as the cloud layers don't stay in line, but functionally it works so I'll have to come back later and work that one out.

Re: Centipede Core
Thanks for your great work on this core! One thing that would be awesome on Centipede for a future release is screen flip as Centipede was one of those PCBs that displays everything upside down in relation to most popular games of that era. I'm not the original author, but I have been fixing lots of bugs. I'm working on adding screen flip support....

Try loading and using the update_all script. That fixed it (and several others) for me. The main update script seems to be broken.

Re: High pitch explosions for Xevious and Galaga
Hi all, Regarding the Galaga explosion, I had a conversation with a friend of mine who is an expert in this area. Here is a summary of his thoughts: The 54XX custom chip outputs digital white noise, usually that would be a stream of 0's and 1's randomly distributed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_noise). However, the 54xx outputs 4bit values, ...

Re: How important is the VGA connector?
I wouldn’t worry about it. HDMI works great for LCDs. I use a cheap HDMI to VGA converter to hook my MiSTer up to a CRT in my arcade cabinet, which works great (using a J-Pac and sound amp). Make sure you get a HDMI to VGA converter with sound out as well.

Re: High pitch explosions for Xevious and Galaga
It would be great if you could post some samples here. Thank you. Cool. Here are all of the Galaga sounds sampled directly from an original Midway Galaga PCB (if you boot with the test switch on, you can play the sounds individually with the fire button). I used PCB speaker out to a speaker-to-line converter into a recording interface, so this is ...

Re: High pitch explosions for Xevious and Galaga
Please watch YouTube videos of the original games. Also some of these boards shipped with different value parts throughout their life and sounded different depending on the board. See galaxian. I’ve owned several Galagas over the years (and even more PCBs). The explosion on mister is nothing like any of the originals. Again, I appreciate the work ...

If anyone needs a sample from an original Galaga board let me know. I love the Galaga version on MiSTer, but the explosion is so off from the original (it is a bit disconcerting). I would be awesome to get it corrected.

Re: First Q*Bert Release
I am having problems with this core. Upon loading nothing happens, the screen stays black. If I go in the OSD and switch the settings from Horizontal to Vertical and vice-versa there is some activity on the screen: - When switching to horizontal a band of pixels appears briefly at the bottom of the screen, its height is about 1cm and its width cor...

Re: Donkey Kong Update
The core is still relying on audio samples, as did MAME prior to 2007. Open the .mra files and you'll see them encoded in there. Till somebody figures out a way to simulate the analogue audio hardware like modern versions of MAME do, we're stuck with those inaccurate sound effects. Thanks for the info. Does that include the music / tunes as well? ...

Re: Donkey Kong and diagonal controls
How accurate are the sound effects in MAME? Old versions of MAME (and MAME 2003) use samples to get around the analogue circuitry, but modern versions have some kind of simulation/emulation going on. MAME is accurate. I’m not sure if embedded the samples or are generating them some other way. On Mister, the music/tune rhythms are off, which is str...

Try linking the boot In the ini file to the *.rbf file that you want to load. I’m pretty sure that’s how I do it.

Re: CRT with HDMI, Component, and S-Video - which is best?
It’s pretty rare to have a CRT with HDMI. Pretty cool. It is hardware dependent based on the TV’s preferred frequency, but I’d start with HDMI. I believe that what will really matter is what frequency the TV likes vs. the native frequency of the core. Any conversions between the two likely will cause lag.
