Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Just tried the new official core, and my SVGA monitor connected via direct video on the HDMI port with a VGA adapter complains about the signal being outside of sync range when I try to run Doom and the sound is choppy in the menu that I can't see. I also tried second reality and it just does nothing with a black screen. I am using the ET4000 bios....

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

I just read the release notes post about the ao486 update and it says this:
- MIDI port (dumb and fake-smart modes)

Does this mean that intelligent mode will work now without softmpu? If so, that is awesome!

LOL, I didn't want to officially say it in my post a few hours ago, but I was also waiting for an official release before trying it. If only I had waited a few more hours... :-D I am looking forward to trying the official release now! Thanks so much.

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I finally got around to trying this. I have been waiting because so many improvements have been coming and I wanted to let it mature a bit before taking the plunge. Well, I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed! A great benchmark for me is the Future Crew Second Reality demo. I played this demo so many times on my 386DX33, my friend's 486DX33 ...

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

Cool that you have it working! Doom and Duke Nukem aren't the best tests for sound quality though as they are not designed to be used with the MT-32. They are general midi which the MT-32 is not so it plays the wrong instruments. I think there may be a way to put the MT-32 into General MIDI mode using SysEx commands or playing a MIDI into it that s...

Re: Phaser Light Gun

I am using a light phaser as well and the first game I tried was Gangster Town ;) For me it works perfectly. I am using a Wega Trinitron and for any light guns to work (phaser, zapper, Justifier) I need to set the TV to "vivid" mode, which increases brightness and contrast. If you find your shots are off with the phaser you need to get f...

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

Does anyone know if the PI MT-32 project running on the nearly bare metal Circle OS can work with LAN/UDP mode with the Mister? I just bought a Raspberry Pi 4 and I want to start with just the Pi before I add the MIDI port to it. I can't try it yet because I don't have a Micro HDMI cable (which will arrive tomorrow). If not, I will probably install...

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

Thanks! I wonder if the Pi project and hat would work on a Pi 4. That would have even more power in case it helps. Edit: reading the github page, the project works on a Pi 4. The hat is out of stock on the pre-order, but it wouldn't be hard to build one. Of course, just using the wireless option works too if you only want to use it with the Mister.

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

Hi guys, Have you seen this bare metal MT-32 emulator (via Munt) using a RPi : https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi There is a nice RPi hat, which I have one on order: https://www.arananet.net/pedidos/product/pi-midi-a-baremetal-mt32-emulator-using-raspberry-pi3/ Also ordered a USB MIDI interface, so hopefully in a couple of weeks I can test. That ...

Not using SoftMPU! --> https://youtu.be/IxORU_e3owI YES!!!!! I have the same model Sound Canvas and am looking forward to trying this. This is a dream come true. I hope intelligent mode is not far behind. Can Munt on the Linux half of the Mister be used with this? How's the performance of that? Maybe we need a Roland MT-32 in FPGA as well, lol.

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

Awesome! I was hoping for this. I posted about HardMPU a few times and it supports both modes and is open source. This could be used to learn how to implement it. My question still stands though. Currently, can you use a normal USB port with the Roland UM One or do you have to use the UART USB port on the DE10 Nano?

Re: Doom with Midi Sound (Sound Canvas)

When using a Roland UM One, do you have to use the UART USB port on the DE10 Nano, or can you use any normal USB port? I haven't tried this yet and I noticed the UART USB port on the DE10 and wondered if that was required for UART related stuff. Thanks.

Re: Phaser Light Gun

Thanks. I am using the native frequency combined with the Mister's doubler that makes it work with VGA monitors, so I am not defining any specific refresh rate. It will change based on whatever the original is, just doubled horizontally. I suspect the problem is due to the same issue as when I use the USB extension cord with my Retrobit controller....

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I have a Roland Sound Canvas and a Roland UM-One mk2 and would love to be playing Dos games with it (and Munt). It might be a bit cumbersome to setup, but you could connect your Sound Canvas to a windows PC and use the midilink UDP function to use it with the Mister. Thanks. Midilink UDP sounds awesome for getting MIDI out of the MISTER using the ...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I have been holding off but heavily thinking about posting this due to all of the current forward progress on this core and not wanting to derail it, but since someone brought up SoftMPU, I figured now is as good as a time as any. I posted in another thread about HardMPU. The HardMPU is essentially an opensource arduino that can go into an ISA slot...

Thanks! I have another Phaser on its way from ebay. The one I have now I was finally able to get it to shoot something, but it is off by several inches horizontally and it is not reliable even when doing that. It's almost like the timing is messed up or something. Hopefully the new one will just work and I can return the original one.

Phaser Light Gun

Does anyone know if the Phaser light gun requires a brighter CRT than the NES light gun? I have both, but only the NES light gun is working. I had to turn the brightness up to get the NES light gun working. The trigger works on the Phaser but that is it. I am wondering if the gun is broken or if my monitor isn't bright enough. Thanks!

Here is a patch for the kernel to fix the RetroUSB adapters: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/868613f1c0ccf7b832f38b48b18cca31cdeb3d26 Apparently they need the HID_QUIRK_INCREMENT_USAGE_ON_DUPLICATE quirk. Wing Commander doesn't have a software throttle built in. It was too fast on newer computers back in the day. Back then, I felt it was perfect on my 386DX33 and too fast on 486 computers. There are slowdown programs that can be used in DOS to slow it down.

Re: Rotating vertical games on a CRT with vga scaler - lag?

Answering my own question, from what I have been able to find using extensive searching, the vga_scaler=1 inherently adds 2 frames of lag which is equal to about 33ms. Also, I noticed that using vsync_adjust=2 works fine for normal 4:3 arcade games, but causes horizontal jitter when rotating vertical arcade games like Donkey Kong. Using vsync_adjus...

Rotating vertical games on a CRT with vga scaler - lag?

Hello, I have a 21" VGA monitor that works great and syncs to most arcade cores without issue (rotated sideways on vertical games). My monitor is quite heavy and I am always afraid I will drop it on something when rotating it. I was able to enable the scaler and set up per core rotation in the INI file so I wouldn't have to rotate my monitor. ...
