Re: ao486 wish-list

SCSI would be very useful for compatibility with niche OS'es and the emulation of stuff like tape drives, also interesting for other architectures like VAX.

Looking for Amiga scene demo

Ok, weird question. I remember a multi part demo from the early 90's for Amiga. It ran on a standard A500 with Kick 1.2 and a 512 K trapdoor expansion. The annoying bit it.. all I really remember to identify it is an audio sample of the phrase "esta loca" with some piano-like latin inspired upbeat score behind it. If I recall correctly th...

What does 'shutdown -r now' do? That's generally enough of a reboot to bring any regular Linux box back in line.

I can really only comment on the C64 and Amiga parts of TOSEC and those have been spot-on for me.

Re: Game compatibility for classic computer cores?

C64 is so close to the original that I've yet to spot any glitches in any of my original software. The only areas where I see minor differences is in recent demos that push the C64 to it's utmost limits but even those are hardly noticeable to the untrained eye. For all intents and purposes your MiSTer is a C64, unless you really go looking for minu...

Love the discussion.. an additional point from this sysadmin/devops type IT geek: which foundational works on EE would be useful? While code is familiar enough, I feel like I'm sorely lacking in the EE department.

Re: Recommended WiFi Dongles

The DOS in AO486 expects hard drive-like timings. Latency is a factor. It would be interesting to see how busy the Linux side of things is when your CD game is playing. If it takes CIFS too long to deliver new bytes, DOS probably throws a fit and thinks the CD is broken.

Re: Better performance and 080 support?

Sounds like AO486 but for Amiga. The AO486 is not an absolutely accurate reflection of a 1990's PC but that doesn't stop the DOS crowd from having a wonderful experience on it. Compatibility-wise it has rough edges, as would a big Amiga if it's not an exact replica of a released historical model. This circles right back to wanting to use MiSTer as ...

Re: Can't view scripts I copy into /scripts folder

The FAT filesystem is not case sensitive, but it's good to be aware that Linux generally is. So 'scripts' and 'Scripts' can be wholly different things. It doesn't bite us in /media/fat but may well do so if you format a second SD card using something like EXT4 instead of FAT or decide to explore the rest of the Linux parts of MiSTer.

Re: Running MiSTer on 12 Volts?

You know microchips are filled with magical black and white smoke, right? To keep them functional, it is imperative that this smoke remains sealed inside the enclosure. Pushing too much power through the circuitry is a very effective method of releasing the trapped smoke, which would be.. bad.

Re: FreeBSD not booting

That should mean it could run off a floppy. Less than ideal of course but I'm going to look into building a custom stripped-down kernel with the bare minimum of hardware support and see what MiSTer makes of that. Now to test if I can compile FreeBSD 3.0 for i386 directly from a jail on my 13.0-RC2 laptop.

Re: Custom Video Mode settings - Dangerous for CRT?

Yep, as stated above.. CRT's can and will fry when pushed with the wrong signals. Many newer ones have detection in place and will simply show a message like 'input out of range' or similar. Others will go wonky for a bit, and still others die with a pop.

The AO486 is your closest bet, but it's a lot more powerful than a 80C88. At least it should run your software though.

Re: The Verge Published an Article on MiSTer

Indeed I know next to nothing about the market for FPGA boards but some prices I did see are pretty much prohibitive to a project like MiSTer. Sure some would still buy in at 10x the current price point but not many. Here's to hoping that a similarly priced successor platform will be available at the inevitable point in time when the DE10 Nano ceas...

Re: The Verge Published an Article on MiSTer

I bought a DE10 from some big electronics retailer, no questions asked. Only later did I find out about its intended purpose. Right now I'm taking my first baby steps with Quartus, Verilog and VHDL. Something I would have never done if it weren't for MiSTer. I never pretended to be in academia or industry and misrepresented myself in any other way....

Re: Redbook CD Audio Support?

Heh I lived through DOS because my dad thought it prudent to buy a massively overpriced PC right before I finally saved enough for myself to buy an A500. I did get one years later out of nostalgia. Amiga is still superior in many ways. The crap one takes for granted in Microsoft-land boggles the mind. The 7th guest was one stunning game at the time...

Re: Faster CPU for Minimig core?

How is a request for an accurate FPGA-simulated Amiga 3000 craziness? Software emulation did Amiga long before MiSTer was even a thing. By your reasoning the whole project should not have happened because there already was a working alternative. Sure an A3000 may be darned near impossible to do (I don't know) and the value of it may be low in terms...

Re: Faster CPU for Minimig core?

That's quite a bold statement: the only useful hardware config. Being an overclocked 68k adds nothing functionally. A 60030 with MMU and FPU would. WinUAE needs a PC with Windows. That's completely incomparable to the instant-on hassle-free near native feel in a tiny box of the MiSTer. Which model? Simply the most basic initially released version o...
