Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Yeah, I had hoped UART could be used to access files on the SD card or other storage media maybe. It seems he made a sharedfolders feature for the Minimig Amiga core. But my plan for now is to ignore Windows I think, because it just seems too unstable... well, unless Cache25 made it more stable, I might try it once more.

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Can anyone get the 10x uart to work, in win95? it causes all kinds of bad stuff, for me, maybe, just unfinished, but, I'm wondering if it works for anyone. I was trying to install some stuff in Windows 95 yesterday, but began getting errors like the ones you get in Windows 98 with Cache24. Not sure if that might be better in Cache25, but overall, ...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I just tested Doom and Doom2 with cache25 and they start, with music, and play as good as they have been, without dropping to 30mhz, first. I can't promise the soundcard fix in this beta will fix that issue with all games that wouldn't initialize the soundcard at the higher speed, but, I have a feeling, it does. I still get freezing with 100mhz, b...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Windows 98 with the ET driver is unstable above 16 colors, Windows 95 with the ET4000 driver can run all the way up to 1024/768 256 color, though I keep it at 640x480 True color. W95 has been the most stable for me with the new driver. W98 will freak and show rainbow lines and then blue screen pretty often. Stick to W95 or Dos for now or wait for ...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

This page does a good job of explaining the issues with speed affecting soundcard detection. http://sierrahelp.com/Utilities/SoundUtilities/GOSiERRA.html It is not that I doubt the problem exists, it just seemed it was now working better... but it was just some games that handles this problem better it seems. Duke3D and Doom still has the problem....

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I tried Death Rally and it keeps crashing, I do get into the game now, the menu and such, but not the game itself... I suspect the problem with 100mhz might also be... less of a problem. Both when it comes to detecting the sound devices and the freezing issues. Just seems strange that the bios affects that... or maybe not, but... should the bios p...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

By the way, I can confirm that this bios fixes sierra games like spacequest 1 that have garbled text. So far it looks good to me... but it is also the only one I have tried. But I have gotten Settlers 2 running into the game itself and Syndicate Wars. Both would not run before at all. I tried Death Rally and it keeps crashing, I do get into the ga...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I tried all the ET4000 drivers I could find for Windows 95 and I tried several different DOS drivers as well. Nothing seems to work for me... but in many cases it does seem to run except it just freezes the display. I suspect if I connect the MiSTer to a CRT monitor, it might switch to VESA mode... but in Windows it keeps seeing it as a display dr...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Personally I'd be much more interested to see this core's roadmap and dev efforts concentrate on the 386-486 era, ie DOS, 2D and very early 3D games. Win 98, Quake, Tomb Raider, etc all belong in the Pentium zone. Sure, you can run them on lower spec hardware but not with a performance level acceptable for modern times. Heck, even Doom really need...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

let me clarify, I was using cache20, I am now using cache24. when I was using cache20, the freezing was worse than it is, currently, on cache24, but, still there, I also fail to see what my post had to do with VESA. Ahh. Yeah, I assumed you were trying to run VESA games. As for the freezes, I think I had the same problem. I was installing Windows ...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I was trying Descent, but it was without the correct bios file, so it did not work for me... but it might also require FPU which this core does not have. So its still what would count as an 486SX, and I think FPU would make it a 486DX. Although there is more to it than that, since there are 386DX CPUs I think, without that meaning they have FPU. A...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Has anyone tried Tomb Raider? I thought it might be a good performance test for the core. It did launch for me when I tried, but I couldn't get into actual gameplay. This was with cache_14 I believe, so it might get further now. Tomb Raider is another FPU based 3D game. I can see there are threads on VOGONS where the question is whether its possib...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

So SVGA / Vesa support is being worked on and Starcraft / Broodwar have a sys requirements of a 90mhz + svga. This would open up quite a bit of games and push ao486 to run things up to the mid-late 90s. I would be interested to see how far this core can be pushed. Has anyone tried Descent yet with the new cache fixes? I was trying Descent, but it ...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

I think you might have the same problem, or, similar, that I have, 100mhz will usually freeze ao486 for me, and 90 was causing protection and page fault errors with cache20, now, 90mhz seems ok, but, 100mhz will still freeze, but, sometimes, takes a few minutes, sometimes, immediately. I was even having some problems on the official main branch re...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Anyone got VESA games working using the Cache24 build? I tried the Tie Fighter CD version, but had no luck, the game crashes, the moment it should switch into actual gameplay (the bitmap screens work fine, but I think they are not Vesa). The game uses Univbe and detects a Tsang Labs ET4000. I found a bunch of VESA stuff. I think the Collection of ...

Re: Using CD images with AO486

(snip) Game Wizard 32 Pro essentially gives you multi-tasking for DOS. So while running the game you have a hot-key that jumps into Game Wizard and then you can actually launch a prompt from Game Wizard, and you might be able to use that to change CD. Wow, Game Wizard. I could not remember the name of that program for the life of me a while back. ...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

You got Windows 98 SE running? Pretty sure second edition requires FPU, and I dont think the new core has FPU? setup /nm /nm - Bypasses internal processor detection, to allow Win95/98 install on systems that do not meet Microsoft minimum requirements (i.e. 386, 486SX etc). Very good to know :) I will try installing Windows 98 SE again. I had hoped...

Re: Using CD images with AO486

Has anyone found a way to switch CDs in-game (in DOS)? Just going from games I own or have played, Privateer 2 and Gabriel Knight 2 (DOS versions) would need it, I think. (Not actually sure if C&C or Red Alert, although multi-CD, actually need in-game CD switching, since they have a disc per campaign.) That is probably going to be a problem......

Phil has made a phantastic job with his Start Menu where you can select different configurations at start https://www.philscomputerlab.com/ms-dos-starter-pack.html# It is a good job, just take note that the MiSTer requires extra settings so his initial setup wont work for EMS. You need to add something like this: FRAME=E000 D=256 X=A000-C7FF I=C80...

Doom seems to run almost perfectly when I set it to 30mhz though, but it is losing some frames. Faster speeds makes sound effects and music much too fast, and even the game itse...

Something I noticed is that when using Windows 98 as the DOS basis, then I can get a lot more highmem free. With a pretty solid EMS setup in 6.22 I can get about 592kb free when I have loaded DOS, but with the Windows 98 boot, I have more than 600kb free. But, its not as compatible as 6.22 though. A good boot menu is the way to go. One for EMS and ...

Now that a new Core is coming that makes Windows 95 and 98 much more viable, I can suggest trying Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%, they support several CD formats and audio CDs. my guess would be a Tseng Labs ET4000 You’d guess correct. That was the driver referenced in Sorg’s screenshot preview. Its going to get VESA support :o I have been missing that.
