Re: Audio pop when CD track begins playing

My PC Engine CD images are from the Redump set. Just to make sure that nothing went wrong with the image, I went to Redump's website and compared the MD5 hashes of all the bin files for the game. I couldn't spot anything wrong with the bin files' hashes. The cue file's contents appear to be identical as well. I make no assumptions about downloads ...

Re: Arcade Card BIOS

I know the original print run of the PC Engine port of Golden Axe refuse to run on anything but a Systems Card version 1.0. A Later reprint fixed the issue, abet the actual game disc is rare. But it is a terrible port of Golden Axe, even the Sega Master System has a better port. You have this confused with Altered Beast (Juuoki). Golden Axe doesn'...

Re: Audio pop when CD track begins playing

Can you give a specific example ? I haven't seen anything of this sort on any any rips made properly. However, I have seen a few video captures of things like this, and the reason was because the disc image of the game being played was bad. In these cases, either: a) The track itself isn't ripped properly (sound at either end of the audio track com...

Re: Arcade Card BIOS

The Arcade Card is not possible to have connected at the same time as HuCards on real hardware, as they can't both fit in the cartridge port at the same time. I suspect that the issue you see has nothing to do with the Arcade Card (but may still be some other kind of bug); Sorgelig confirmed that Arcade Card activity is dependent on CDROM operation...

Re: Extracting saves from PC-Engine real hardware

There are a couple of links in that thread... more specifically, there is this message: http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=9417.msg71671#msg71671 . elmer had rewritten the operating system for TurboEverdrive, to be able to back up save data to memory card. But read the notes; if I recall correctly, you will need to create backup files of the c...

Re: Debugging/simulation?

I used www.edaplayground.com for developing the MB128 functionality for the TurboGrafx core, but all of the other updates I've made so far have been done blind. Simulation seems like a great answer to specifically-designed scenarios - especially simple ones - but in a core that runs through millions of instructions before an issue arises, simulatio...

Re: Star Parodier and the the Super System Card/Bootrom

My understanding based on my studies of the CDs, is that the duplicate copy of the data track is for redundancy in case the "Track 2" version is somehow damaged. However, I don't believe that I've ever seen/heard/witnessed such a failover.

Re: USB CD-ROM Support

I re-ripped my collections in 2018, to ensure I have a digital copy of everything - and to verify that I didn't have anything inauthentic. For HuCards, I required that the rip matched another rip from an independent source, or a second copy from my own collection. For audio CD's, I counted only unrecoverable errors (using dbPowerAmp ripping which h...

Re: Star Parodier and the the Super System Card/Bootrom

I only learned of a repress recently from Japanese friends, after about 25 years. And I searched for it during those years.
Trust me, the 'fix' version is rare. And I am also told that it still contains bugs (although not as serious as the one that got fixed).

Re: Text glitch in Asuka 120% Maxima - Burning Fest. Maxima (Japan)

I see this too.
Some text pixels show as black (the picture in the bug report isn't clear on this), when on real hardware they show as the same color as the other pixels.

Furthermore, during the intro, the top line of the screen shows part of the sprite data (and real hardware doesn't).

Re: Extracting saves from PC-Engine real hardware

If you are technically inclined, Chris Covell wrote a serial-port monitor program to communicate with the PC Engine, called PCEmon.

I documented the steps required to grab backup memory here:

Re: Just wanted to say awesome work srg320 and Sorgelig!

Anyone know what the new update "MB128 support from dshadoff" is for? Sure. The backup memory on the original PC Engine was 2KB, and placed on an internal memory to be shared among all the games that a person owned. This caused some problems over time, of course. Two solutions came out: 1) Tennokoe Bank card, which could save/load 4 sepa...

Re: Converting CDD/IMG Disk Images to CUE/BIN

The PC Engine games are pretty sensitive to timing, so TurboRip was written specifically to ensure that reassembly into an image would match original timing, and a table-of-contents database constructed by hand from all discs. Is this why a patched version of Ys IV won't convert properly with TurboRip, or should that matter? Since the same guy cre...

Re: ao486 wish-list

What is currently holding back this core is its memory implementation (getting EMM to work properly is still a pain) and the crashes related to it, and the performance of the CPU. I recall using PCs around that era, and extensively using various versions of EMM and QEMM. Don't make the assumption that original hardware was ever working bug-free wi...

Re: What type of SD card to get for MiSTer

I use Sandisk Ultra cards, and I've never had a problem.
I have heard about other people who had problems (on other hardware) with Samsung cards, because they would stall at times while the internal controller would perform functions behind the scenes (such as erase).

Re: Just wanted to say awesome work srg320 and Sorgelig!

The CD fast seek option saves maybe a second or so at times, but really not so much that it's worth toggling. Without the delays, the cinemas lack gravitas because the actions and sounds don't match up like a bad dub; also, there are a couple of games where ADPCM makes noises if this is off. Frankly, I don't see what the point of disabling the dela...

Well, I started with: Books: "Verilog by Example" by Blaine Readler ISBN 978-0-9834973-0-1 (but this was a bit abstract) "Programming FPGAs - Getting Started with Verilog" by Simon Monk ISBN 978-1-25-964376-7 And I had started with a simple board from here: https://www.nandland.com He created an linked to some good basic videos,...

Re: Learning to develop a new MiSTer core

The best place to start depends on what you already know. - Introductory Verilog/VHDL book, and some digital electronics (something like Arduino-level) is a basic place to start before trying to understand any code. As for the code, pick a simple existing core like an OLD arcade game or one of the earliest computers (think: simple !), and study the...

Thanks for making this my favourite core of the bunch. I've only had experience with HuCard games, so it's been great exploring the CD library. SNAC has limitations due to the fact that original PC Engine controller timings are tighter than the current open-c...
