MIDI Mess Windows 95

Unread post by Carpetman »

Hi, sorry if it’s already discussed or I’m missing something obvious, but playing games that use midi files for music (such as Westwood’s Monopoly) are playing incorrectly. Not sure if this is a core, driver, or user issue. Thanks

I came to the same problem using default PnP configuration in Win95 OSR. My ao486 version is ao486_20210109 now, but on earlier version (2021 year) situation was the same. Some notes are not playing, some are wrong. In pure MS-DOS 6.22 MIDI is completly prefect.

- make sure you've updated ao486 and Main to latest.
- check UART mode settings on OSD.
- check windows drivers, it's advised to use separate MPU401 driver, not integrated into SB16/AWE driver. You can go to driver properties and choose HW config which doesn't use port 330. Then go to "Add new Hardware" and detect for new HW.
- In windows Multimedia settings make sure MPU401 is selected as a MIDI sequencer.
- If you use internal MiSTer MIDI, then better not to use MUNT as it's slow and laggy due to not enough ARM performance.

1. Checked, both are updated.
2. UART is disabled.
3. Can't understand what parameters should i use for additional MPU-401. If I'm trying to add a second MPU-401, Windows can't let me select address 380. Even if i change address for SP16 driver to 220 only and built-in MPU-401 driver uses 330.
4. If I select MPU-401, no MIDI sound playing at all. That's expected, if I understand everything right - I'm not using additional virtual synth.
5. Don't even know what MUNT is.

I tried several configuration for SB16 driver. Automatic, manual A220 I5 D1, manual A220 I7 D1... All sound wrong. But in pure DOS A220 I5 D1 config works perfect without any hussle.
