Acorn Archimedes Core
Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
I can confirm this. The 15khz output probably got killed by the latest commit that forces the vga scaler. No need for that IMHO. I will open an issue on github.
Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
Hi, I'm following this thread with interest, as I'm trying to make the CROS42 image work on my machine. Unfortunally, the latest given link is broken. Did anyone still have this image?
Thanks
Thanks

Yes !
Thanks a lot! But It's still the version with the "insert CROS4 disc" error, I was looking for the corrected version.

mmm.... I'm sorry, but I have the feeling that the .arc file is corrupted, I can't open it. Tried on my mac and on my pc. Or did you use a specific programm to unpack it?

That file is supposed to be unpacked on the Archimedes Use SparkFS to open it.

Thanks for re-sharing this. Can you please let me know how to mount the CROS42.arc?
At the moment I have mounted hd4.hdf on HDD 0 and hd5.hdf on HDD 1.
Many thanks in advance for your help!

@Alkadian,
I need to retrieve my notes to tell you how I did it. There is a while now and to be honest my memory makes me default (my brain becomes old )
I keep you posted asap.

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
@Alkadian,
I retreived my notes please see them below (I thank Zarchos which did provide those information some time ago)
Here is how I did in order to get classic riscos working, for being sure, I restarted everything from scratch and it worked again
Archie core : Build 06-11-2020
RiscOS : V3 (3.11)
HDD 0: CROS42.HDF
HDD 1: * no disk * (just for my trial but a disk can be mounted)
the below CMOS.DAT that you've to place into your \fat\Archie
https://mega.nz/file/MOxAADiI#SsKzAIEnr ... XbcCYYk9_0
Start the core with the HDD 1 mounted with CROS42 (mount the HDF and reset the core)
Push [F12] : In this case the OSD will not appear of course and at the [*], type
modules (you should see somewhere at the end of the result : IDEFS
type then the following :
configure filesystem idefs
configure idefsdiscs 1
configure idefsdrive 4
configure idefsdircache 32K
opt 4 2
configure boot
Reset the core and it should now boot on your CROS.HDF.
Let me know if this helps you.

@kathleen,
Many thanks for your very clear instructions. Much appreciated!
Sorry, just a question. I have got only a CROS42.arc which I have downloaded from one of your previous posts and not a CROS42.HDF. Would you mind sharing that .hdf with me please?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
Hi Alkadian,
As promised, here is the link where you can have access to the HDF that I used. The CROS is zipped but this time, once unzipped, you'll get the .HDF
https://mega.nz/folder/VGZADDwK#zdJu45EJSZyu54dgsIRtZQ
Let me know if anything else is needed from my side.

Thank you so much for sharing the file!
I would really appreciate your further help as I am sure I have been doing something wrong.
So far I have placed in the folder /media/fat/games/ARCHIE the following:
cmos.dat
CROS42.hdf
RiscOS.rom
When I lunch the core from the OSD I mount HDD 0 with CROS42.hdf
Then I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+AltGr (long press) to reset the core.
Then I have pressed F12 and the symbol * appeared at the bottom of the RISC OS 3 desktop.
Then I have typed the following commands:
configure filesystem idefs
configure idefsdiscs 1
configure idefsdrive 4
configure idefsdircache 32K
opt 4 2
configure boot
Then I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+AltGr (long press) to reset the core.
I could see a boot sequence on the screen for the Classic RiscOS Version 4.2 but then I have got only a black screen.
I went through these procedures 3-4 times no but to no avail. Hence, your help will be very much appreciated!

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
Hi Alkadian,
After having done the reset, have you checked that your HDF was still mounted ?
Between the HDF mount and the Reset Ctrl+Alt+AltGr action, try to save the configuration (so, before the reset) to be sure.
Unless you're sure that your HDF was still mounted.
When you entered the manually the configure commands, did you get any error ?

Thanks for helping me out.
Yes after resetting the core the HDF is still mounted and I have saved the settings just to make sure as you suggested.
No I haven't got any error messages after entering manually the commands.
Thanks!
PS. I have attached a few screenshots. Sorry for the very low quality!

Hi Alkadian,
This is weird, I'm still at work, when I'll have finished (in around 2 hrs) I'll share with you the RISCOS version that I used just to be sure we're using all the same files. (Just have a look at my Mega link that I provided you this morning, I'll upload the file in 2 hrs)

Many thanks for uploading the additional files. I went through the procedures a couple of times. Basically after resetting I now get the following error message:
Error File 'IDEFS::CROS4.$.!BOOT.Utils.!TQROSP.Texts.78' not found (Error number &D6)
Many thanks for you patience
Edit: I have tried again and now I don't get that error message anymore but just a black screen after the risc os 4.2 presentation screen!

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
I am doing some progress here!
I have replaced the command
configure idefsdircache 32k with
configure systemsize 32k
and bingo!! It booted this time! But I am stuck with a new error message when OS 4.2 starts which is 'Please insert disc CROS4'.
I am getting there though

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
@Alkadian,
I've just uploaded the file cros4.adf in my Mega, could you please mount it as 1st floppy disk and retry. This is what RISCOS is looking for. I'm surprise that you still have this message after having entered the commands that I listed.

Hi kathleen,
Thanks again for the new file! It actually worked like a charm! The only annoying bit is that after the system boots up the screen goes completely white! No idea, but I will keep trying. It is got to work

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
@kathleen,
I am afraid it is time for me to give up! I have tried the procedure several times now but to no avail. I have also tried with another MiSTer FPGA setup which I have got inside my arcade cabinet, just in case it was something related to some screen/monitor compatibility issues and again no luck!
Every time I have got a white screen after the OS 4.2 desktop boots up. And I can confirm that I need to replace the command 'configure idefsdircache 32k' with 'configure systemsize 32k' in order to boot the system.
Never mind, at lest I have got a working Archimedes setup which I can play with! That's the beauty of having all these awesome cores available for us!
Thanks again for your kind help!

Re: Acorn Archimedes Core
Can you try
configure MonitorType 4
and tell us if that changes something ?
( Remember to reboot with left CTRL + Break and keep pressing left CTRL until you see the RISC OS desktop banner ).
It tells RISC OS the attached monitor is Super VGA
I see when booting, the LCDGameModes module is loaded, it is intended for users of VGA or SVGA monitors ... meaning what's on your hard drive is intended to be run on a machine with a VGA or SVGA monitor ...
There may be some MiSTer monitor settings to change too ... so that both monitor types ( RISC OS and MiSTer ) settings are SVGA.
Note the best monitor setting is in reality Multiscan, with
configure MonitorType 1
and you don't need to load the LCDGameModes module anymore.
Some infos about this module, and what it was coded for :
https://www.retro-kit.co.uk/LCDGameModes/
EDIT : If I understand this correctly
viewtopic.php?p=12746#p12746
it means the Multiscan monitor setting should be retained for RISC OS running on the MiSTer
( configure MonitorType 1 )
and you should remove the loading of the LCDGameModes module.

Many thanks for offering your help! Please find below my findings:
CASE 1:
configure monitor type 4
configure filesystem idefs
configure idefsdiscs 1
configure idefsdrive 4
configure idefsdircache 32K
opt 4 2
configure boot
straight after the message Boot:Choices.Boot.PreDesk.!LCDGames
the screen goes black.
CASE 2:
configure monitor type 4
configure filesystem idefs
configure idefsdiscs 1
configure idefsdrive 4
configure systemsize 32K
opt 4 2
configure boot
it passes the line Boot:Choices.Boot.PreDesk.!LCDGames and when the desktop appears I get graphical gliches (i.e. diagonal white and grey lines)
CASE 3:
configure monitor type 1
configure filesystem idefs
configure idefsdiscs 1
configure idefsdrive 4
configure idefsdircache 32K
opt 4 2
configure boot
straight after the message Boot:Choices.Boot.PreDesk.!LCDGames
the screen goes black.
CASE 4:
configure monitor type 1
configure filesystem idefs
configure idefsdiscs 1
configure idefsdrive 4
configure systemsize 32K
opt 4 2
configure boot
it passes the line Boot:Choices.Boot.PreDesk.!LCDGames and when the desktops appear I get the usual white screen.
Please advise!
Many thanks.
