Seems like the remaining work is mainly about polish. Easier said than done, but Laxer and Ultra did get a lot done. Whoever decides to pick this up will be in a much better position than he would have been otherwise.
Yeah, he did an amazing job I think. I do not feel my money were wasted. I had even tried to tell him to take breaks and such. Its all well and good to get Patreon support and feel obligated to put work in, but seems to he overworked himself.

I hope he recovers, and I am just happy that he and Ultra shared their source code stuff. Its amazing how close it is to a working Playstation I think.
Yes doing passion projects can run you into health issues as well. Been there almost, done that, I was glad enough to hit the break at the last minute. But I also did not have the responsibility to run a Patreon on top! So quitting/putting things into hiatus was easier once I could acknowledge, that I have a problem! I hope he recovers. And as well from my side, a ton of thanks for the work.

Truly sad to find out that the work that was being done on the PlayStation core came to a complete halt. Has anybody picked up on this project or it's completely abandoned?

Hopefully SRG320 can do it after the Saturn becoming the 32-bit FPGA God.

TL;DR - laxer is still working on it, but at a very slow pace

and yes, it would be amazing if someone like SRG320 would step up to finish the PSX core (or at least help move it along)

Whoa whoa whoa, so Laxer3A is back working on the ps1 core? That's awesome news!! Even if he is taking his time with it i'm happy he is back.
Also like you both @PikWik and @H6rdc0re said it would be amazing if SRG320 or someone else gives a hand

I saw his Patreon last update, if he feels better and enjoying it better at a slower path, that's the way to do it. Glad to see him keep going at it with less presure and more pleasure.

Awesome! That will be another quality core. I wonder if he is planning to create it from scratch or is building it from existing work.

For now,if I understand correctly, he stated that this is running in his custom sofware emulation on a PC. It is written in a way to be translated to FPGA with relative ease. Few months back he did say that he would look into it when the project was kind of cancelled by Lexar. Glad that he decided to actually go for it.
I'm sure there is no harm in looking into the open source content available already. But I also think that fun part for him is to have his own twist on it. ^^

Based on his background I think we can expect some nice enhancement like perspective correct or HR mode if he manage to fits all these instructions in the FPGA. But even if he couldn't this is still the best new this year with the Saturn core annoucement. Thank you Robert!

Very exciting news! I never had a PS1, and only played on one a few times, so I am not that familiar with them. I was curious about the graphics capabilities and I found this article comparing the PS1, Sega Saturn and N64 that I thought was interesting: http://www.racketboy.com/journal/ps1-st ... ega-saturn

The laxer3a project wasn't necessarily cancelled, it was paused after there were internal problems with the other dev, ultraembedded (personality conflict I suspect, it happens). There has been some progress on the project lately and laxer3a said he plans to continue soon.

Also, I'm assuming (and basing this upon Robert has made) that he makes his emulators from scratch because he works better that way and he can know what everything does. He may use other emulators as a reference, but given how he works best, he starts from scratch.

Just remember there are tones of Playstation based Arcade boards so any work done can be used to work on porting these Arcade systems. Games like Tekken, Dance Dance Revolution, Dead or Alive and more!. Here is a list of said boards
