Light Gun

Unread post by stepea »

Thinking of adding light gun to my mister setup - firstly will it work on my Samsung 55" QLED TV

If so, I guess I need official Wiimote, Wii sensor bar with usb & bluetooth receiver.

If there anything else I need or to consider. Is it worth getting a Wiimote gun, if so which is the best ?

A old style Lightgun will not work on LCD via Snac. They only work on CRT

You can use a Wiimote.

In the future Gun4IR https://github.com/JayBee-git/GUN4IR or the Sinden Lightgun https://www.sindenlightgun.com/ may come to the Mister

The Sinden will require a raspberry Pi or some such to do the Maths needed as the Mister Arm core isnt powerful enough. The Gun4IR requires 4 IR beacons attached to your TV

Just for info: You need a original Wiimote. I have several "clones" here and wasn't able to connect any of them via bluetooth.

If possible stay away of the 5V USB sensor bars. The original Nintendo sensor bar has two more leds and is more accurate than the 5V USB clones.

If you have the knowledge, buy a cheap original Wii sensor bar on ebay and modify it with a step up voltage regulator. I modified several and use one of the MiSTer USB ports to supply them with power.
We raise hopes here...until they're old enough to fend for themselves.

For those with large screen setups...

I've owned one of these forever. I also recommend the Dolphin Bar...but that's better used for PC emulation builds. Either way, that above one works quite well.

That one looks a lot like the one that came with my wii (got it used) and I never could get it dialed in right. No matter how narrow or wide I made it, the remote would lose sight of the bar on the extreme left and right edges, making it impossible to calibrate correctly.

I looked into other solutions and there used to be one kind of like what I'm building (sensor "eyes") but it was discontinued forever ago. The dolphin bar is another possibility but just like the normal wii bars, unless you can get it wide enough, you'll almost have to play from the next room due to the limited angle of the sensor in the remote.
The bar that allows an adapter is slightly better than the one that only accepts batteries. The issue is the adapter one is trickier to fine. I can have issues from time to time and i find fresh batteries tend to resolve it. I use Eneloop batteries now for this purpose.
