CRT with HDMI, Component, and S-Video - which is best?

Unread post by TrejoPhD »

Hi!

I’ve got a CRT HDTV with HDMI, component, and s-video inputs.

Do they all perform the same lag-wise? So I should just go with the one with best color?

I’ve searched around here and Reddit, but can’t find an answer beyond LCD vs CRT.

THANK YOU!

It’s pretty rare to have a CRT with HDMI. Pretty cool. It is hardware dependent based on the TV’s preferred frequency, but I’d start with HDMI. I believe that what will really matter is what frequency the TV likes vs. the native frequency of the core. Any conversions between the two likely will cause lag.

Thank you so much for my reply!

I agree they’re rare; I didn’t even know it had HDMI when I bought it. When I got it home, I noticed and was like... “huh.”

I would take a guess that all inputs have the same latency. I would try HDMI first.

HDMI going into a CRT tv will be scaled/processed in some way as you will be going from a digital signal to an analog signal internally for it to be sent to the CRT's analog guns. That will introduce lag and most likely artifacts in the displayed image. All that being said maybe it looks the "best" on your tv and the lag is low enough to not bother you - ymmv.

Most likely HDMI will have lag as it's doing digital to analog conversion.

I would go with the Component personally. S-Video for the mister is still spotty, Component is pretty standard for MiSTer users and can be very high quality.
