No logo starting at the Gameboy Core (kinda)

Unread post by MysteryScience »

Hello guys good day,

I hope everyone is doing fine and first of all I wanna thanks to Sorgelig to create this new forums.

I have a problem recently, I'm not sure, but when I'm loading the Gameboy core I can't see the Nintendo word, just the trademark logo, and some times the screen disappears for a few seconds but just only the first time when you load the core.

Other cores like arcades or other consoles works correctly

Is it a problem with the Bios ?, I have seen in other videos (on Youtube) that this part works correctly.

Im using an HDMI cable to connect to my TV normaly anything complicated.

thanks in advance guys and many thanks for creating such a wonderful dream like is the MiSTer.

Looks normal to me. Mine does the same, and I know my BIOS are good. Works fine as soon as you load a game in, right?

It's how my real Gameboy behaves. Without a cartridge, the Nintendo logo is garbled.

The Nintendo logo is stored as 48 bytes in the header area of the game cartridge. So it's not stored on the Gameboy itself.

The Gameboy logo is blanked out on real hardware without a cart inserted.

Thanks guys, yes, it's true, I didn't know about this behavior when you start the gameboy without a car inserted.

I start the games without problems and to take advantage of this thread, I tried - Revenge of the Belmonts of Castelvania II - and if you leave the game (without touching anything) and start the text there are some black bars up and down like flashing.

Is my game or is a normal behaviour?

thanks in advance guys

PD. love this community you learn a lot, you are awesome guys :)

I do not own that game, but I can tell you the Gameboy core exhibits a lot of such graphical glitches, so I'll bet on a core issue. I don't think anybody is maintaining it at the moment, but I might be mistaken.

For your Revenge of the Belmonts of Castelvania II, make sure you got a good dump.
Some roms out there are corrupted or otherwise bad dumps.
It is my great regret that we live in an age that is proud of machines that think and suspicious of people who try to.

Hence why on a real Gameboy if the logo is corrupted, the game won't load as it's an indicator the Gameboy is not reading the cartridge correctly.

This is untrue technically. The Gameboy core is updated frequently. The last binary (release) is from 18 days ago. and since then there have been 11 updates (pending a new release by sorgelig when everything gets verified/validated). You are welcome to submit issues (after searching the closed issues to make sure it hasn't been addressed) anytime you notice something that doesn't behave the same on original hardware though.

If you guys are interested in knowing more about the "Nintendo" logo on the gameboy (and how it was used as a copy protection mechanism), check this video from Modern Vintage Gamer.

Cheers!
