Sound Working For Some Games on MiSTer FPGA PSX Core

Unread post by Xbytez »

Robert (@AzumFpg) has released a new beta PSX core build, it is now available and has working sound for some games. Remember this is still a beta core and is very much a work in progress. Please note a dual SDRAM setup is currently required for testing.

https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer

SPU : 30%
  • Requires second SDRAM for now
  • Reverb missing
  • Envelope missing
  • IRQ missing
  • Noise missing
  • Readback missing
  • Capture missing

The is seriously impressive and an amazing thing you are building for the FPGA. Very excited to try when it releases in the nightly.

This is not a beta, these are nightly builds :D

Oops, my bad, to all testers as per Roberts request on the PSX GitHub page:

Robert has now implemented SPU reverb in his latest commit, moving the SPU from 30% to 50% completion by his estimates.

how do I get this working? I downloaded the files from mister psx on github and compiled the rbf with quartus 17 like before. I put a 32mb sdram in and flipped the switch. I see "sound enabled" in the core settings, but no sound over hdmi. Am I using the wrong thing? What do I need to do?

If the sound enabled is not grayed out(and set to on), you should get sound, as this checks for the right switch position.

BIOS is a safe thing known to work, try that first.

FPGAzumSpass did 3 releases this weekend and already the audio has come a long way. I did a 4 hours stream yesterday testing a lot of games:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6aMXFgeCWM
I have not added time stamps yet, but I have tested a lot of games. Quake 2, GTA London, GTA 2, Tekken 3, Alundra, Resident Evil 2, Legacy of Kain, Broken Sword, Discworld 1, 2 and Noir, C&C, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Motoracer, Wipeout 3 and probably several more.

Remember to NOT use the Unstable Nightly builds. Currently they are set to enable the Analog IO board, which means they disable the second SD RAM, and the second SD RAM is required to have audio for now. I used the nightly at first which meant audio was grayed out in the menu. Might be the same if you have the right test build but the second SD RAM is not installed or detected.

This one time, I want to be faster than Xbytez :P

SPU is at 60% now.

Does it matter on the size of the second memory slot to be used? Is 32mb enough in slot 2 for this?

just beware that there is some old type of 32MB SD RAMs for the MiSTer that wont work as the second SD RAM for this core. Something about using 3 pins or something.

The older 32MB SDRAM modules are not suitable, If it looks like the below image it won't work:

However what you will need if using a 32MB SDRAM as the second SDRAM module is the newer XS v2.2 version.

I have an old 32MB SDRAM as the first module and a newer 128MB as the secondary working perfectly

Of note, if you have the requisite skills you can modify an older incompatible version SDRAM module, like so.

I didn't have second SDRAM chip to test sound so I bought second MISTer and scavenged SDRAM module from it :D
It came with newer module version and in my old MISTer I had old type. So I have 32MB old type + 32MB new type and sound works just fine.

Not sure what I will do with poor ramless MISTer I guess that while I order and wait for 128MB module(s) I will be at least able to play on it some Atari 2600

I think I might get digital I/O board for second MISTer and keep it beefed up with two memory sticks if that will help getting full PSX performance. It will however depends on if I find suitable HDMI VGA converter and direct video works fine on it.
