PSX Core Black Screen on VGA?

Unread post by Nickie »

Hi folks!

I've been trying every ini setting but no matter what i do the PSX core gives me a black screen upon loading, but only through VGA with direct-video

No problem on CRT with RGB, no problem with other cores, :shock:

I'm kinda lost here, any idea?

Here's my latest attempt at a VGA INI file:

Code: Select all

[MiSTer]
key_menu_as_rgui=0 ; set to 1 to make the MENU key map to RGUI in Minimig (e.g. for Right Amiga)
forced_scandoubler=1 ; set to 1 to run scandoubler on VGA output always (depends on core).
ypbpr=0 ; set to 1 for YPbPr on VGA output.
composite_sync=0 ; set to 1 for composite sync on HSync signal of VGA output.
vga_scaler=1 ; set to 1 to connect VGA to scaler output.
hdmi_audio_96k=0       ; set to 1 for 96khz/16bit HDMI audio (48khz/16bit otherwise)
keyrah_mode=0x18d80002 ; VIDPID of keyrah for special code translation (0x23418037 for Arduino Micro)
vscale_mode=0 ; 0 - scale to fit the screen height.
                       ; 1 - use integer scale only.
                       ; 2 - use 0.5 steps of scale.
                       ; 3 - use 0.25 steps of scale.
vscale_border=0 ; set vertical border for TVs cutting the upper/bottom parts of screen (1-399)
;bootscreen=0 ; uncomment to disable boot screen of some cores like Minimig.
;mouse_throttle=10 ; 1-100 mouse speed divider. Useful for very sensitive mice
rbf_hide_datecode=0 ; 1 - hides datecodes from rbf file names. Press F2 for quick temporary toggle
menu_pal=0             ; 1 - PAL mode for menu core
hdmi_limited=2         ; 1 - use limited (16..235) color range over HDMI
                       ; 2 - use limited (16..255) color range over HDMI, for VGA converters.
direct_video=1 ; 1 - enable core video timing over HDMI, use only with VGA converters.
fb_size=0              ; 0 - automatic, 1 - full size, 2 - 1/2 of resolution, 4 - 1/4 of resolution.
fb_terminal=1          ; 1 - enabled (default), 0 - disabled

[EDIT] : figured out it doesn't happen if i put a stock mister.ini as main file, problem seems to then happen if i set this one as MiSTer_alt_1.ini , the PSX core seems to do some switching of it's own but it actually works as primary INI

Re: PSX Core Black Screen on VGA?

Does the Monitor you use support the resolution and refresh rate of the PSX?

I have the same issue on my VGA Monitor which doesn't like the refreshrate of the PSX (it is not a TV after all). Reason is, PSX Core doesn't support scanline doubler (forced_scandoubler=1) which would be needed in such a situation.

Only option I have is to enable vga_scaler for the PSX and try to set the video_mode with a modeline to match the resolution of the PSX (so as to avoid the need for scaling the original image).

no it's just a VGA thing so i don't suppose it does

PSX does work though if the MAIN ini is vga-oriented, not not with a MiSTer_alt_1.ini, i can try to switch back and forth between INIs and i see the de10 blinking but nothing on screen :|

tried adding this to the ini :

Code: Select all

[PSX]
vsync_adjust=0
video_info=0
vga_scaler=1
video_mode=768,36,96,60,480,8,2,35,30140; 768x480, 60Hz

but no change

You said you use a HDMI -> VGA converter since you use direct_video? I have no experience with these but do they actually work with the wonky resolutions the PSX throws at them?

well somehow they do when the INI is mainly targeted at them

i've tried doing the opposite now, mister.ini is VGA oriented, and on the CRT i run mister then switch config to mister_alt_1

and the playstation keeps working in this order... :| ( on both )

How did you get this work, I don't really understand. Are you talking about an HDMI to VGA converter/adapter paired with a VGA CRT monitor? If so, I cannot make this work on my end. I have all my ini "VGA oriented" . Can you please post the steps by steps with your config. Just to be clear, I don't have this problem with a CRT TUBE TV, just a VGA CRT monitor. All other cores work fine, just the PSX one that doesn't support scandoubler, so the frequency is always out of range for the VGA monitor as it expect 32khz and not 15.7KHZ as the PSX output. Thanks in advance
