VGA Scanline Generator

Unread post by Robgus »

Has anyone tried this on their Mister?

I see that there are different options out there, both for vga and for hdmi connections. I was wondering how it would look when using a lcd vga monitor.

For example: http://arcadeforge.net/SLG3000/Scanline ... anguage=en

Or is it unnecessary due to the video processing options..?

Reminder to try to use HDMI->DVI adapter with old LCDs if you can, you will get better results.

Failing that, try vga_scaler with a video_mode matching your monitor's native resolution. That will open up all those video filters over VGA.

The thing about an external scanline generator is that it's going to place them without any care to the pixels. There are usually adjustment buttons or switches but then many console and arcade systems don't share the same resolution or scale. As you change between cores, you'd have to adjust it again and again and again. Compare that to the MiSTer's filters where the scanlines can be set and saved for every core to line up exactly as it should with the added bonus of additional tweaks like composite blurring or shadow masks. All of that is already a part of MiSTer versus spending money on another device. There's no real point in buying a scanline generator for MiSTer. They're only maybe a potential solution for something that offers no filters like using real hardware on an LCD. Otherwise, nearly any emulation solution (software or hardware) is going to have scanlines or CRT filters as an option.
