How to setup the ZX Next core?

Unread post by Newsdee »

I keep getting this error when launching the core:

Error opening TBBLUE.FW file

I've tried using the standard boot.zip in /media/games/ZXNext/ both as a zip and extracted to VHD. Neither worked.
I also tried updating TBBLUE.FW to the latest firmware distribution.

Are there more files that have to be copied over to the VHD?

Have you got it set up on the secondary SD card? If so delete the boot.zip file from the Spectrum Next folder in the games directory on the main SD card. If you are running it from the main SD card, I think that you need to unzip the boot.zip file.

I use the main SD card... but I did unzip it.
Does it need tk be unzipped if I use a 2nd SD card?

From the readme of the core

Place rbf into root of SD card.
Unpack and place boot.vhd (from releases folder) into /Games/ZXNext folder. Alternatively you can rename it to ZXNext.vhd and place into root of SD card.

https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ZXNext_MISTer

Every core on MiSTer comes with a detailed instruction on how to use. Many users aren't aware of this.

I unzipped the vhd and it still doesn't work.

Where did you unzip the vhd? Is it named boot.vhd? It works for me.

Do you have both boot.zip and boot.vhd in the /games/ZXNext ? If so, delete the zip file (leave just the extracted VHD) and it should work.
I had the same error until I deleted the zip, now it works fine.

I had a bit of a struggle with installing on a secondary SD card. The instructions on github currently do not mention that, to use a secondary SD card, you need to create a dedicated SD card for the Next and extract the files from the .vhd archive to the card.

It does not work if you just have the .zip or the .vhd file on the secondary SD card, you then get the "Error opening TBBLUE.FW file" message.

That's exactly how an actual Next works. In fact, the .vhd was simply created from a nominal SD card installation.
