The other thing is how are you transferring your roms to the N64

If you are using Filezilla then I bet you havent turned on binary mode in the transfer options. Of course a Better option is WinSCP which handles things properly

Wait, yes! I am using FileZilla! I will try this now!!!

Well, that got me excited, but no change. "auto-detect failed" on every game, some load, some boot to black screen. I'm using the no-intro big endian ROMs. I don't know what it could be. Perfect example, Mario Party 1 and 2 work fine, Mario Party 3 boots to black screen. All three are on the supported list.

is the database txt file in the games folder?

No idea then if you used binary mode on the transfer and you are using the No Intro set then I dont know what else to say. Just make sure your roms are in zips and not in 7Zips is my only last resort

The No Intro sets tend to be distributed as 7zip

you need to attach a screenshot of your N64 directory

Screenshot attached. The N64-database.txt is in the games folder.

Yep. I think I'm just going to reformat and start over from the beginning and see what happens.

I created a new card from scratch, and it DID fix the "auto-detect failed" on every game! Hooray! Some ROMS still don't work, so I have to assume they just aren't a compatible version.

Now copy that N64 directory onto your old card and it should still work. Some games just wont work yet if they have tlb in them

There might be more underlying problems with that card. They may not be noticed until later on.

Alkadian, you need to patch the Super Mario 64 rom. Go to Vampier's website and there are the files and instruction on how to do it

I searched what you wrote, Vampier's website, but I couldn't' find it. Would you be able to give me a stronger pointer in that direction, please?

With today's build, I was able to boot up SM64, see the stretchy face, and get to the rest of the game without using a patched rom.

I used the Sanni Cart Reader to dump my original carts including Super Mario 64 and its save file. Before TLB I was playing the NTSC patched version and now that I can run my dumped PAL rom the speed difference is immense!

As a general aside, when is the PAL version the preferred option? I imagine UK developed titles such as Goldeneye the PAL version is the version the devs intended - is the NTSC version always faster?

From the Wikipedia page regarding that topic.

i guess if you prefer PAL or NTSC comes down to personal preference or rather what you were used to playing i guess?
i can imagine a person used to PAL wil find NTSC to fast or think that the timing might be wrong and vice versa.

i asked the question why Robert (FPGAZumSpass) chose to play PAL titles instead of NTSC, and this was his reason.

FPGAzumSpass wrote: Sat Oct 07, 2023 6:58 am

Some games have the "wrong" speed for me with NTSC, being used to PAL.
And for some i just prefer the text to be in my language.

So i accept lower FPS and even blurrier image.

Games that have slowdown are sometimes better for me on PAL, as i like static 25fps or even 17fps more than fluctuating 20/30.

In general the NTSC markets (Japan/US) were by far the most important markets for the N64 and every developer targeted the NTSC model, making the PAL version an afterthought. From a framerate perspective the NTSC version is always the preferred version. If you want to play a specific language version it may be different.

Even when one of biggest developers for the N64 Rare were UK based ?

Even then, because the majority of games was sold in NTSC markets. Nintendo sold about 20 million N64 consoles in the US, 5.5 million N64 consoles in Japan and about 5 million N64 consoles in Europe. The sales in PAL territories were tiny compared to the sales in NTSC territories.

Rare developed for Nintendo games that were sold worldwide, the games were not made with the european market in mind specifically.

Yes. I actually asked rareware this, back in 1999 or so. Pretty sure it was Wil Overton I emailed. They focused on NTSC first and foremost, but made sure the PAL versions were optimized. Goldeneye, for example, ran at a higher resolution (correctly, no borders!) and ran at the correct PAL speed. The same went for the DKC trilogy on the SNES.

Because playing at 30 fps is better than playing at 25

The only "correct" answer here is "whichever feels better to you."
