N64 Sound Issues

Unread post by Retroloon »

Hi all, newbie to the Mister scene here.

I'm experiencing issues with sound on the N64 core... every game, even less demanding titles, has really scratchy and buggy sound. Video is perfect. I'm using analog out video and audio to a VGA monitor. Using the core through update all.

I've had a quick search through the forum and found nothing similar being posted, so pretty sure it's just my newbness and looking for someone to point me in the right direction? TIA.

Never noticed a sound issue the way you described.
Im using a HDMI Splitter goning HDMI to Monitor and splitt audio via 3,5mm jack to speakers

Do you have any sound issues on other cores ?

im afraid your path ends here ... Jago

No, everything else runs perfect.

I'm sure it's something dumb I've done.

OK, so I've downloaded the 24.03.22 core and everything seems fine... is it maybe something to do with the turbo functionality in the new core? I don't see a toggle or menu option related to turbo...

The 3.5mm audio jack on is also notoriously problematic for some users, although I don’t know why it would only impact N64 core. Could just be up to luck with the cable moving slightly between use.

Another better but slightly more expensive option is to use audio from toslink / optical out through a small amp to your speakers — I think there are some cheap options on Amazon for this.

OK so, I "fixed" it.

I plugged it into an HDMI monitor, obviously turned off VGA scaling in the ini, and problem solved. I'm still using the 3.5mm jack for headphones so it's not that. Weird.
