It's highly likely Jotego would have finished a PGM core by now but the usual
idiots picked CPS3 so we'll be able to play street fighter 3 in a few years...

To be fair, 3S is one of the best fighting games ever made and still actively played in tournaments. A good Mister core would really shake up and revitalize the community, it would actually make a big impact.
We have SF3 Online which is an OK port (music is really bad though) but stuck on X360 and PS3.

So a CPS3 core would go beyond just game preservation, it would greatly support an active tournament scene.

edit
Just checked and there is a 30th Anniversary Collection on Steam and it has 3S. No idea how accurate it is...

Believe it or not people have largely moved on from 3S and those that haven't play on fightcade which also does online. So I don't see revitalization as a serious argument. Mister doesn't do online and would be a serious PITA for local tournaments compared to the well-established alternative.

People always move away from old games to play the latest version. The popularity of old games depends on how good the game was and 3S was very good, despite needing at least one more revision.
Fightcade is not a factor in what I'm saying, I'm talking about tournaments. Would love to hear what are the "well-established alternatives" that you speak of. If you actually look at 3S tournament platforms, you will see that they play on original arcade boards which are known to have a short lifespan. Last year, it was played on this contraption:

This is not "well-established", it was used for the first time.

And here are the numbers for last year's EVO.

Purists play on original CPS3 boards sure (and something tells me same purists will keep playing on those boards regardless of Mister getting a core), but when I last had a look at the SoCal arcade scene, XBox360 was very popular but also people played on FBNeo.

I think the biggest problem is everyone playing on different systems. So you get used to timing on your device then you go to a tournament and drop combos because it's played on something else.
Even modern games have this problem. They are currently arguing over SF6 which has the lowest lag on PC (and many people play on PC at home) but it's played on PS5 at tournaments since Sony is sponsoring events and you can't really expect a tournament organizer to provide dozens of high end PCs.

So if we had 3S on the Mister, it could become a standard for everyone.

its also worth noting that other EVO side tournaments (SSF2 turbo, and darkstalkers) are now played with a MiSTer. and those games are even older and more niche than third strike.

but yes, there will be fighting game tournaments who run original boards or use FPGA. i guess the point is, modern tournaments are using FPGA arcade cores now and not relying on pricey/finicky arcade boards.
