screen adjustment for CRT monitor - how do I adjust vertical height?

Unread post by spikemorrissey »

I am running Minimig on an Amiga 1080 monitor. on certain games such as Superfrog, I cannot see the top score display and time. There is no way to adjust the vertical height up and down on the monitor itself and from the OSD the controls only adjust the left and right image size. Is there a way to adjust the up and down image size please?

The Github docs state

Screen adjustment

Adjustment is initiated from OSD menu. Keyboard control:

Code: Select all

Cursor keys - top/left corner.
ALT+Cursor keys - bottom/right corner.

if you're using amigavision, click esc into the workbench, then go to amiga/prefs and overscan.. set the screen up the way you want it then save.. when you relaunch megaags, it should have adjusted too.

The music is reversible but time is not. Turn back. Turn back

Thank you for the reply - I'm using Minimig as I'm outputting RGB to a Commodore 1080 monitor and I believe Amigavision performs specific scaling for HDMI output as opposed to Minimig?

If that's right, is there a way to adjust in Minimig please?

according to the amiga 1080 manual there's a vertical height control at the back of the monitor.. have you adjusted that?

These are to adjust the HDMI scaler, not the analog output. The core has no analog output scaling settings as far as I know.

Most Amiga monitors (including the 1080/1081/1084) have vertical height adjustments, although some will require a tool to access. There’s a huge variety of CRT tubes and boards used throughout the years though, so maybe you got unlucky and have one of the models that are not adjustable. But do check the back as Bazza_12 pointed out.

Thank you - I did see that before but just assumed it was a hole! - do you know where I can find a tool to adjust it please?

If I remember correctly, isn’t it just a simple flathead screw that will work with a screwdriver? Can you take a photo of it?

Edit: Absolutely make sure it’s made of plastic, not from metal, forgot to mention that. CRTs are scary beasts, don’t use metal tools with them!

Back in the CRT-era we'd use CRT adjustment tools, they are plastic and non-conductive (be careful about poking conductive screwdrivers into appliances with mains/high voltage).

I did see someone has made a 3D model available to print.

i'm not sure what you'd use, but like limi said (and it's mentioned in the manual too) don't use anything metal.

I used to have drawers of these things.

https://www.amazon.com/Philmore-Anti-St ... 01MXZGEXT/

(or local equivalent) will more than do the job for 3 lifetimes with ANY electronics.

Mine was even more basic, just simple red plastic with an open trimmer on one end and closed on the other, but I don't think those are Amazon-able.

These arrived but I have no idea which one should be used for the 1080 monitor and how it works, I seem to be just pushing in random plastic sticks into a hole that never ends!

Hrm...the hole is there to lead to a potentiometer to adjust the height, but it's possible it wasn't included on all monitors.

If you shine a cell light or similar in that hole, you're looking for something that looks like this-ish (on the left):

Anything like that visible?
