Switching Games Is Not Working?

Post by dyne »

I decided to get a larger SD card for my setup and do away with the connected HDD setup I had. Now I just have a 1TB SD in the MiSTer and no connected storage. Everything is fine and working good except one thing. So far on both the PS1 and Saturn cores I'm unable to change discs without rebooting the entire core. In the past I could boot up say Symphony of the Night, get bored, go into the menu and pick another game and it would load right up. Now it doesn't work that way. In the PS1 core it just flashes the currently selected region and the current game stays mounted. To change games I actually have to reboot the MiSTer and restart the PS1 and Saturn cores.

Using the update_all BIOS and game images are unzipped and .CHD files Same with Saturn. This same workflow worked fine with my previous setup.

Does this sound remotely familiar to anybody else?

You've always had to restart the PSX (from within the core, not restarting the whole MiSTer) and Saturn cores when changing games because, just like real life, the console has no way of knowing whether you're swapping to another disc from the same game upon request or if you're changing games entirely. In the real world, you had to power-cycle or press Reset...exactly the same in FPGA.

Are all CHD files in the same directory? If so, try instead setting up a separate directory for each game. This way the system should know that it loads a new game and not a another disc from the same game.

Yes they are in the same directory.

Just for a little bit more info, just the other day I was playing a JPN region game, opened the OSD and successfully launched a US region game without resetting the core. I could not however launch a different US region game without resetting the core.

That's because when you change regions the BIOS has to be loaded which is an implicit reset.
