eXo/Flynn Top 300 DOS Pack Updates (Updated to 2.0.2 MyMenu) and Support

Unread post by flynnsbit »

Post Questions, Game issues, Fixes you did to the pack to correct something *(Problem games are flagged with hearts)

:!: 39 games flagged in the original 300 pack as not working, 4 have been fixed but not rolled out yet.

Intro to how these packs are setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPAgOff ... e=youtu.be. You should watch this...

Current games not working or with game breaking issues (sound distortion) have been flagged in the interface as a favorite (❤) or (!) if you ran the update script in post #2: 35

Based on the awesome eXoDOS Project. More info here: https://www.retro-exo.com/exodos.html

This is a fully tested collection of the Top 300 DOS games for the AO486 Core on the MiSTer FPGA converted from eXoDOS v5. The full pack with CDs (140) and Floppy games included is 66GB zipped and 89GB unzipped. It includes a curated list of multiple "Top 100 DOS Games lists" from the internet to make up the 300 games in the collection. There are a good range of games through the years. Days of work has been put into this collection to verify each game for maximum compatibility. Soundblaster is the default unless audio worked by default out of the eXoDOS v5 collection. Games are flagged on launch if they require a different memory manager. CD's will auto mount on launch.

This is the entire end-to-end pack with everything you need (cd, floppy, and vhd images.) You must set IDE 0-0 Boot VHD as your Primary and IDE 0-1 Top 300 VHD as your secondary. The CD and floppy folders need to be copied into your /games/AO486/ folder on the mister drive you are using for the core (SD or SSD/HDD)

Any games that I could not get working are flagged with hearts in the Launcher.

FAQ:

Favorites
There are 39 games flagged as Non-Working (with Hearts). I used the favorites flag as NON-WORKING in this pack so anything with a heart has issues. I found fixes for BioForge (1995) and PGA Tour Golf 486 (1994) since creating this pack and will work on an update script to fix them.

Memory choices

HIMEM should be the default choice. I added a warning to the launch of any games that require something different, simply press CTRL-ALT-DEL when you see that message, pick the memory manager it suggested, and go right back and launch that same game. It takes literally a second on the mister.

Updates
There will be an update process for packs that will allow for fixes to cfg;ini;bat;run scripts without having to download the entire packs. These update packs will be very small. More to come.

But Why did you do this?
I want more people to be able to enjoy DOS games while not having to know DOS. We needed a good all-around games pack that was a good entry point to DOS without being massive. It needed to include everything end to end to get you going (e.g. CD images)

I needed to run through the entire end to end process of converting games from eXODOSv5 to MiSTer's AO486 core so that I could find out where all the automation issues are in the conversion. I randomly picked 300 games from the Top 100 DOS games lists on the internet to create this pack. It has no thought put into it besides that. Each game has been tested and an attempt was made to correct it.

If you would like to watch my entire testing of these games and the manual changes/troubleshooting over the 14 hour journey you can watch it in the below links. You would be crazy to do that, what is more useful is quickly jumping to a specific point in the video as I went in order. If you want to see what I did to fix command and conquer, you can just jump to the part in the video when I am in the "C's" and pretty quickly get to command and conquer and then watch me figure out the issue and solve it.

Re: eXoFlynn Top 300 DOS Pack Updates and Support

Unread post by flynnsbit »

Update pack is ready to open up to more people. This is an update script that will pull down scripting changes that fix various games in the 300 pack, add new features, and various other maintenance and enhancements. Note, the update pack does not include any games, these are either features added to the tools used in the pack or batch shell/config updates to fix games. Instructions for grabbing the updater script are in the github readme.

https://github.com/flynnsbit/Top300_updates

Some of the changes from the original pack release from archive to the current version as of 1-8-21 (v.0.7.2)

Updater AO486 Top 300 pack update script for Mister:
One step process to pull down the latest release changes from github and push the changes to the VHDs.

Updates to the AO486 DOS Launcher:
  • Full mouse support
  • Joystick Support (analog and digital)
  • Joystick support for pause, Coverart/Game Description/About
  • Joystick and mouse support for Choice allowing for selection of the sound choice using joystick, mouse, or arrowing up and down to select. Great for living room setups.
  • Icon changes to change the way we are using favorites in this specific pack (changed flag to ! icon instead of a ♥) to signify that there is an issue with the game that was found. These will be removed as we fix issues with games.
  • Launcher persists User Selection and place (config file option)
General fixes:
Changes to order of boot menu and add defaults
Memory swapper scripts
move from using copy to xcopy
Game index update
Integrate MT32-pi auto switching for MT32-pi when selecting MT-32 or SoundCanvas.

Manual Game fixes to this version if you want to get these working now before the update script is available:

Dune Launch options for CD (Option 4 and 5):
edit Run.bat and change the path at the end of the exe option from

Code: Select all

E:\games\dune\dunecd
to

Code: Select all

E:\games\dune1992\dune
Video example of the exact changes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1nDHnZ ... e=youtu.be

PGA Tour Golf 486:
run 4_EDIT.BAT and change the last line to

Code: Select all

dos32a golfvmsx
instead of

Code: Select all

dos32a golfvm
Star Control 2 - Fix for the rainbow color pallet issue
add

Code: Select all

/g:BIOS
to E:\GAMES\STARCONB\STARCON2\RUN.BAT after

Code: Select all

STARCON2
and

Code: Select all

MELEE.EXE

BIOFORGE Fix:
Rerun setup and overwrite install.opt files in both sb16 and sc55 depending on what you configured.
Video example of fix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U4Cn5s ... e=youtu.be

Warcraft II Fix:
Looks like Warcraft II doesn't like my D: CD drive hack. Just change the drive letter in the configs to F:\ and it will work. Here is a video on the process and changes you need to make. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fsm_Z25 ... e=youtu.be
Don't just change the war2.ini in the base directory or the run.bat will just overwrite it with the ones in either SB16 or SC55. Fix those and then run.bat will move it and fix the game for you.

Known issues:
Prince of Persia crashes after level one. Seems to be a bug with the crack used in the game.

Love this pack. Most games work right out of the gate.

Star Control 2 - Fix for the rainbow color pallet
add /g:BIOS to E:\GAMES\STARCONB\STARCON2\RUN.BAT after STARCON2 and MELEE.EXE

Star Wars: X-Wing - Needs EMM386. Could use that little warning I see in some of the modified bat files.

Wing Commander: Privateer also has some loud audio glitching during some sound effects. I'll see if messing with the IRQ settings smooths them out.
edit: Managed to get rid of the audio glitch by modifying the emm386 settings in c:\config.sys
Under the [EMM386] setting I changed
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE AUTO 32768 ...
to
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE AUTO 16384 ...
Temporary fix which may mess up compatibility for other games that use emm386. Flynn is exploring another option.
That fixed the audio glitches, but there's major stuttering during weapons fire that is pretty game breaking as of now. I'm hoping to find a solution, as I love this game.

Great work Flynn!

Amazing work flynnsbit! I played a lot of DOS games as a kid but my uncle always ran the system for me. Your pack is a life saver. I’m naturally a tinkerer, so I’ll eventually learn DOS behind-the-scenes, but until then, I get to enjoy these games. Cheers.

Ok, so I'm feeling really stupid right now. I've downloaded the first 5 files from archive.org. But I can't even unzip them using 7zip, except for the first one. You're doing great work and I didn't even want to write this post, that's how stupid I feel. Maybe I am not even supposed to unzip the files :D

You need to download all of the 7zip files and have them together in one folder. Then click the first one and it will extract everything.

you need every file to unzip the pack. It's just broken up into multiple files because some people have download issues.

Thanks for this!

Nit: King's Quest I (1990) was still EGA, although higher res than the original, unlike the other Sierra VGA remakes.

I also get the message"No CD OK." after the Adelin Logo. The cue file is being put to IDE 1-0, though. I tried to access the disc via f: and d:, but to no avail....

You don't have your file structure setup correctly on the Mister side then. Can you go unmount that cue, remount it, and check to make sure you can DIR on F:?

Do you have hot swapping turned on for IDE 1-0?

Try selecting different memory managers on boot. If you are trying to run back through the setup, and then you use the launch script, it is going to overwrite with ever you did in setup with the default exo cfg files unless you copy over those. Usually those sit in sub directories like SB16 SC55, etc

Plenty of people using it successfully, check your configs, check your mister CD path is right, check that you have the latest bios files, check that you have updated ao486 and main with the very latest. Things like that.

for those having CD mounting issues. Please check that you are using this path to ALL of your AO486 folders: "/games/AO486/" and not "/ao486/". I've had 2 people using ao486 folder at the root and that doesn't seem to work with the auto mounting. If you move EVERYTHING (bios files, vhds, cd and floppy folder) into /games/ao486 it should work.

After posting stupid questions, I read the entirety of your posting on archive.org and well....i just was missing the cd images.

I got stuff running now, adding the cd images manually. to use TDL, which order structure is needed? /games/ao486/cd/gamename/ ?

@ flynnsbit,
Many thanks for this awesome work! It's simply fantastic!
Just a couple of questions, if you don't mind.

1. When I get the Microsoft Windows 98 Start Menu, which the best option between the 5 listed on the screen?
2. If I wanted to add a new game say Alley Cat, would it be possible to do it?

Thanks a lot!

1. HIRAM is the best option unless the game prompts you for a different one (usually EMM386). You will see it come up if it requires EMM386 when you launch the game.

2. Yes, install it like you normally would and then launch "-Manually Added Games" at the top, and add your game there. You cannot add it to the main index so this was the best option. Read this on how to add games over there. https://forums.launchbox-app.com/files/ ... l-edition/ and video here of what -Manually Added Games does: https://youtu.be/WPAgOffVcAg?t=312

@ flynnsbit,

Great work on this pack. I've been absolutely loving playing some of these old classics over the last few nights and you've massively lowered the bar for entry here (my DOS knowledge is extremely rusty and my own initial efforts to setup AO486 were slow going!). So far, so good in terms of most games running straight out the gate, too... I'll keep an eye out for patch scripts for fixes here and there.

I have a few questions, if you have the time.

The first question is about audio. So, my directories are set up as per your instructions. CDs are mounting and so on. Soundblaster audio works great on every game I've tried so far. I've also played a bit with Munt and Fluidsynth. These sound great, but the audio timing with these soft syths seems to be very all-over-the-place in most games... do you know if that's a matter of eventual MiSTer core updates to resolve, or if it's just too much pressure for the MiSTer to be simultaneously running AO486 and a softsynth/Munt? I do have a proper Windows PC and also a Raspberry Pi 4 on the same desk as my MiSTer... so I could try hosting Munt/Fluidsynth/VST/other on these devices... but do you know if AO486 will send MIDI Out with good timing, or does AO486 need more development in that area? I'd be curious if you know the answer to this before I invest a lot of time trying to move the MIDI hosting to another machine. Either way, I'd have to do some more research into how to get MIDI out of MiSTer and into my other computers in the first place.

The second question(s) have to do with specific games I'm having issues with:
1.) I can't get Warcraft II Tides of Darkness to recognise that the CD is mounted. Therefore I can't start a SinglePlayer game. In your YouTube livestream video you didn't go as far as to launch into actual gameplay (just the startup interface). If/when you get time could you please try to start a SinglePlayer game and see if it works on your system, and if so, maybe send me some tips as to how you got it running? Clearly, your startup script DOES mount the Warcraft 2 iso because I can manually cd to the F: drive. It just doesn't seem to recognise this in-game for me and tells me that I need to insert the CD.
2.) For some reason, my keyboard (wireless Logitech) is unresponsive in the game Prince of Persia 2 - The Shadow and the Flame. In your Youtube livestream, it looked responsive on your system. I can press the ESCAPE key to skip the opening cutscene and to pause the game, but the NUMPAD (where the keys are bound by default) doesn't do anything and neither do any of the other alternative keybinds. I've tried every DOS startup mode and had no luck. Any ideas?

Anyhow... I've certainly got a lot of other games to stay entertained with in the meanwhile.

Many Thanks! ~ Jonny

Great work - love it! Played some MOO2 and notice it was v1.1 - send you a discord message about it - I tested the v1.31 and it works without a hitch too - maybe the patch can be included in future updates :)

@ flynnsbit,

I am having a lot of fun in playing all my favourite old windows games! I have been testing many games and they all worked straight out of the box!

Just to report something that perhaps is meant to be working like that. Anyways, every time I reboot the Mister I get an error message as per the attached picture. After hitting the reset button in the menu I can get the Windows 98 Boot screen, as expected.
Thanks!

Are you using the boot and Top 300 VHDs that came with the pack? You shouldn't be ever seeing the runtime error or getting it unless something is missing or corrupt. You can try editing a couple of files and saving them. on E:. EDIT TDL.INI, and then save it. EDIT HANDLERS.INI and then save. That could be left over from a bug in the Converter where github was adding unix characters at the end of the file. just editing them and saving can correct. Weird that yours would work every other time though.

If this doesn't fix it. I am interested in your configuration. In the mister menu, 256MB of memory, 90 Mhz, L1 and L2 cache on?

Yes, I am using the boot and Top 300 VHDs that came with the pack.

After editing/saving those two files I only get the prompt blinking cursor and nothing more. After hitting reset I get the Windows 98 Boot Menu.

Yes 256MB of memory, 90 Mhz, L1 and L2 cache on.

Many thanks for looking at it.

Good news! I think I have sorted it out!
I have just removed an image mounted under IDE 1-0 *.VHD,ISO.CUE

That seems that did the trick. I have rebooted the Mister several times and I have managed to get the Windows Boot Menu correctly.
Thanks!

This pack is just awesome, thanks again flynnsbit! The only thing (that I have tried so far) I can't get working is the version of Monkey Island with CD Music and SFX. The game is running fine but there's no music or sound effects playing for me. The floppy version with adlib and VGA works great so no big deal.

tvspelsdagboken I run a video game site (in Swedish)
