Unable to SKIP joystick buttons with SPACE

I'm trying to set up simple joystick emulation via my connected USB keyboard.
I only want to add the A button for now and skip a few others.
The dialog box says to press "USER" to skip and leave a joystick button undefined, but which button is "USER"?
Documentation around the net speaks of pressing SPACE to skip, but that seems not to work (anymore).
I can only press SPACE once, maybe because it attaches the SPACE key to the joystick button.
This is with the latest release.
